Wicked wind storm blasts the Lower Mainland, causing widespread power outages - December 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Some wicked, windy weather has downed trees and power lines, knocking out power to tens of thousands of people across the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast.

There are widespread outages reported including in Langley, Surrey, Abbotsford, Langley Coquitlam, and Surrey, along with North and West Vancouver.

At one point, the Lions Gate Bridge was closed because of trees down in the Stanley Park Causeway.

BC Hydro says it may take until 4 p.m. to get power fully restored.

Wind gusts have hit more than 90 km/hr in some areas.

The same storm is also walloping Washington State, with 75,000 Puget Power customers going without power, at one point.

Here is some important outage info from BC Hydro:

When your lights go out, check to see whether BC Hydro is already aware of the outage by visiting bchydro.com on a mobile device, calling 1 888 POWERON from a corded landline, or *49376 (*HYDRO) on your mobile phone.  If your outage isnt listed, report it to us when you phone. You can also log in to your BC Hydro account to report an outage online.

Heres some tips on what to do during an outage.

Never go near or touch a fallen power line. Always assume that a line or anything that it is in contact with is energized. Stay at least ten metres (33 feet, about the length of a bus) away at all times and do not attempt to remove debris surrounding the line.

Landlord fined over dangerous electrical wiring in multi-occupancy property - December 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A landlord has been fined over dangerous electrical wiring and fittings at a property in Middlesbrough.

Shahzad Afzal was prosecuted following a tip-off to environmental health officers about the house in North Ormesby Road.

It followed an earlier warning about standards at the property after Mr Afzal was first granted a licence to operate it as a 'House in Multiple Occupation' in 2010.

When officers visited the property in March it was found that a number of rooms no longer had electric metering arrangements.

The meters at the house - a large double-fronted three-storey property split into six letting units - had been removed in December last year by the electricity provider due to alleged tampering.

Unsafe replacement wiring had been attached to the electrical installation at the meter point by persons unknown to enable a supply of unmetered electricity to one of the units.

    Electrical wiring and fittings

A number of light fittings were not maintained in the staircase and sockets were found to have exposed wiring.

When interviewed Afzal, of Parliament Road, Middlesbrough, claimed to make regular visits to the premises to inspect for problems, although the evidence suggested this was not the case.

At Teesside Magistrates Court on Wednesday Afzal pleaded not guilty to an offence against the Housing Act 2004, blaming unruly tenants for the condition of the property.

Electrical Wiring Feeder Invented by InventHelp Client (AAT-1683) - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) December 04, 2014

If your work involves the installation of traffic signals, you'll be happy to know there is now a much more efficient way to get the job done. An inventor from Columbus, Ga., has actually streamlined the assembly process.

He developed E Z Mast to permits a worker to feed wiring for the installation of traffic signals unassisted. At the same time, it reduces potential injury to fingers and hands during assembly. It, therefore, increases worker productivity by decreasing assembly time. Furthermore, it avoids the chance of ripped or torn insulation and broken wiring during installation. Instead, it allows the wiring to flow through the opening with minimal resistance. Also, it is designed for universal use on an international basis. In addition, it is safe, easy to use and affordably priced.

The inventor's experience on the job inspired the idea. "While working on wiring installations for traffic lights, I noticed that too much time was wasted with the manual assembly process, which negatively affected productivity," he said.

The original design was submitted to the Atlanta office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. For more information, write Dept. 12-AAT-1683, InventHelp, 217 Ninth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or call (412) 288-1300 ext. 1368. Hastings Women's Rest relocates for renovations - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Hastings Womens Rest building in Civic Square has been closed to the public while a remodelling project is undertaken.

Hastings District Council has contracted Waipukurau Construction to undertake the building renovations that includes the installation of a new roof, insulation, electrical wiring, painting, and flooring. In addition to Councils building maintenance work, the Heretaunga Womens Centre Incorporated Society has raised funds to undertake some minor interior alterations to the reception area, office and kitchen and to install new lighting and heating. It also intends to update the buildings furniture, curtains and signage.

Hastings District Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says "The Womens Rest is a Category 1 heritage building constructed in the early 1920s. It was the first purpose built womens rest rooms in Australasia. The building is well recognised as part of the Hastings historic landscape and this project will ensure that the building is available for use well into the future."

Cynthia Bowers says "The Womens Rest has always played an important role for women and these refurbishments will ensure that this continues."

The Heretaunga Womens Centre Society, Chair Genevieve Beech says "We are delighted to see this project begin and are grateful to Hastings District Council for all the work that is being undertaken. The Heretaunga Womens Centre will continue to offer low-cost counselling and an information Centre from the Lotus Holistic Centre at 1028 St Aubyn Street while the Womens Rest building is closed."

Genevieve Beech says, "The renovation of the Womens Rest building will significantly increase the Centres ability to deliver community services in a safe, warm and supportive environment. The Centre currently has 37 counseling clients, but continues to have a long waiting list. Once the upgrade is complete, the Centre will be able to expand its counseling service and extend the number of low-cost courses that are offered. It will deliver more support groups for the growing number of elderly women in our community and for Maori and migrant women."

The Heretaunga Womens Centre is grateful to the following organisations for their support; The Anne-Marie OSullivan Foundation; Eastern and Central Community Trust; Lotteries; COGS; Vavasour Charitable Trust; Hawkes Bay Foundation; The Lion Foundation; Endeavour Community Foundation Ltd; Infinity Foundation; Springhill Charitable Trust and Frimley Foundation; Flaxmere Licensing Trust; Community Post; Holcim Hastings Quarry; The John Mitchell McLachlan Charitable Trust; Sanderson Trust; Pam Torbett Charitable Trust; Bernard Chambers Trust and Piccolini Kindergartens.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2015.

Capital Projects Moving Along In Fulton School District - November 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Back-to-back capital projects in the Fulton City School District have renovated instructional spaces, upgraded technological systems and safety advancements during the past two years.

The 2012 project saw upgrades to the electrical system, data wiring and asbestos removal from walls and ceilings as a way to modernize the facilities for the next generation of learners. With that project now complete, the district is tackling the remainder of the 2014 venture.

According to Superintendent Bill Lynch, contractors have already made a significant dent in the 2014 capital project.

Completed work includes the replacement of the Lanigan Elementary School gymnasium floor, the construction of an athletic storage building, among other work.

These projects have moved along very well and our facilities are in great shape, Lynch said.

The next phase of the project includes the replacement of lock sets for all classrooms and offices in the FCSD.

School district officials anticipate that bids for this work will be awarded by February, with the installation to take place in the late winter through the summer.

The new locks will make the district even safer, according to Jerry Seguin, FCSDs director of facilities, operations and transportation.

The 2014 project work on the horizon includes the replacement of roofs at Lanigan and Granby elementary schools.

Seguin noted that the construction manager is currently reviewing drawings and that roof work would begin next summer.

Phoenix Contact Introduces Molded Deutsch and Superseal Cordsets - November 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Phoenix Contact USA Posted 11/25/2014

Cordsets for mobile hydraulic applications reduce on-site installation costs

Middletown, Pa. Phoenix Contact now offers Deutsch and Superseal connectors as pre-molded cordsets. These connectors are 100-percent factory-tested and ready for use in mobile hydraulic applications. While the Deutsch and Superseal connectors are well established as quality discrete-wired solutions, crimp technology and on-site installation often add to hidden labor costs.

The Deutsch connector is the female 2-position DT-06-2S and comes in the following variants: without LED to open end (rated 48 V DC at an operating current of 8 A); with LED to open end (24 V DC at 8 A); and with LED and suppressor diode to open end (24 V DC at 3 A).

The Superseal connector is available as male or female to open end, and male-to-female, all without LED. The Superseal cordsets are rated 24 V DC at 8 A operating current.

Commonly used for the discrete wiring of cable harnesses on mobile equipment, the cordsets measure 18 AWG (2 x 0.75 mm) and are made of PUR black cable. Additionally, both the Deutsch and the Superseal feature IP65/IP67 protection and a temperature range of -20C to 85C.

Additional variants, such as double-ended, M12 connectors or other lengths, can be requested through Phoenix Contacts Solution Center.

Firefighter discovers secret underground cannabis farm in Aigburth during smoke call out - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A firefighter discovered a secret underground cannabis farm while investigating the source of a billow of smoke.

Fire crews rushed to a flat in Alexandra Drive, Aigburth, after the smoke alarms sounded.

As they searched for a blaze, one officer found a trapdoor leading to a basement full of cannabis plants.

Faulty wiring in the underground factory had caused the wooden floor to set on fire.

Firefighter Tony Harland, from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said: The original entrance to the basement in the building appeared to be blocked and impassable due to a collection of items.

But a flooring area in a bedroom of the property did not look quite right.

Cannabis farms and locations where cannabis is grown are simply dangerous and firefighters have attended fires involving these farms where people have had to be rescued.

Police are now trying to trace the tenants of the flat, owned by housing association Your Housing Group.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: We are working closely with Your Housing Group to identify the registered tenants and Your Housing Group will be taking eviction against those individuals for this reckless criminal act.

Cannabis grows best in heated environments and dealers often use dangerous electrical equipment to create the ideal conditions for the class B drug.
