SARATOGA COUNTY A popular solar company in the Hudson Valley has partnered with a geothermal firm to expand both types of energy consumption at homes in Saratoga County.

On Monday, only hours before a well-publicized eclipse captivated people in upstate New York, a partnership was announced between Hudson Solar and Dandelion Energy. Both companies have increased marketing operations in the Capital Region.

In a statement, it was reported that Dandelion has developed a new geothermal installation process that can convert homeowners away from oil or gas heat and offer them substantial savings.

A geothermal system uses a heat pump and underground pipes to move heat between the earth and your homeits the most efficient way to heat and cool your home, the company explains on its website (https://dandelionenergy.com).

Jeff Irish, the founder and president of Hudson Solar, said: Dandelion has lowered the cost of geothermal and set up financing so a homeowner switching to geothermal from oil or propane can save money from day one, just like with solar. When we combine our offerings, we enable customers to save money on their energy bills and completely eliminate their greenhouse gas emissions.

In a subsequent email, Irish explained that Hudson Solar originally installed geothermal systems after it started as a business nearly 15 years ago. But the company has focused exclusively on solar panels for the last eight, he added.

Irish said an average single-family home solar system is in the $8,000 to $15,000 range after federal and state incentives and tax credits.

He added that Dandelion and Hudson Solar are now working closely together on advertising, information sessions and events to promote geothermal and on-site and community solar projects.

As a former Town of Rhinebeck Zoning Board of Appeals member, Irish further indicated that he is sensitive to and experienced with zoning laws and issues.

Katie Ullmann, vice president of marketing for Dandelion, said in her own email that single-family homeowners who want a geothermal system installed could expect to pay $150 per month over 20 years with no upfront costs; or $20,000 upfront with no additional costs and minimal long-term maintenance.

Either way, when homeowners get our geothermal installation, they completely eliminate their oil, propane or natural gas bills, Ullmann said.

Dandelion has an office on Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs, Ullmann explained, and also has partnered with the firm Aztech Geothermal off Route 50 south of Ballston Spa.

Dandelion officially launched on July 6, so local marketing efforts are only just getting organized. An ESPN radio host regularly endorses Dandelion on-air and some outreach is taking place this summer at county and street fairs, Ullmann said.

According to Ryan Riper, director of planning and engineering in the Town of Wilton, at present there are 107 residential and seven commercial solar arrays in Wilton. Town officials are currently reviewing a comprehensive solar zoning policy.

Riper said he is not aware of any homeowners in Wilton who utilize geothermal heating and cooling, though one Route 50 business did install such a system.

Homeowners who desire to have solar panels installed must apply for a permit, Riper added, so that firefighters can expect to encounter that type of electrical wiring in the case of an emergency.

Overview

Chicken wire is a very versatile product, used for a range of purposes from chicken coops to plant supports to framing for parade floats and stucco walls. Chicken wire is often sold under the name poultry wire or poultry netting and is very flexible, yet strong. Because it has small enough holes to keep out rodents and other garden pests, chicken wire is very useful for garden fencing and vegetable plant supports.

Build an appropriate frame for whatever purpose you are using your chicken wire. It is easiest to attach chicken wire to wood, so if possible, use that for your framing. If you are building a fence, metal posts are more common because of their ease of use, strength and endurance.

Put on work gloves, unroll 3 or 4 feet of wire and fold the last 3 inches of wire over, making a smooth ending surface with no wires hanging out. If necessary, twist or bend individual wires to get them out of the way. Chicken wire is small, thin wire and is very sharp so use extra care when doing this and be sure to wear gloves.

Attach the chicken wire to a good starting point in your frame or fence. To attach it to wood, use the staple gun or fencing staples and run them along the edge of the chicken wire, about every 6 inches. If using it as fencing, attach the end of the chicken wire to the fence using 6- to 8-inch wire pieces that you have cut from the spool, wrap them around the fence post, through the predrilled holes in the post and around the chicken wire. Twist the ends of the wire at least six times until it is tight around the chicken wire, then bend in the ends to avoid catching on clothing.

Unroll enough chicken wire to move to the next part in your frame or to the next fence post. Slide your fingers (with gloves on) into the holes in the center point of the chicken wire, just past the next fence post, and pull it firmly to stretch the chicken wire across the open area. Attach the chicken wire to this part of the frame or post using the staples or wire pieces. Move your hands down to the edge of the chicken wire and stretch the wire again by pulling away from the center and away from the previous fence post. Attach that section of chicken wire to the post. Continue this process until that fence post or piece of frame is complete, stretching the chicken wire and attaching it to your frame.

Continue attaching the wire to the remaining pieces until you reach the last section. Cut the chicken wire to the desired length plus an additional 3 or 4 inches. Bend over the end of the chicken wire and fold it so that you have a smooth edge and attach the chicken wire to the frame, completing your project.

Using the first wire as a straight line, install line posts (wood or steel) at 15' to 20' apart, adjusting distance as necessary. (High- pressure fences like feed lots will need heavier posts, closer together.) Fasten barbed wire to T post with wire clip (usually provided with new T posts) and/or staple barbed wire to wood posts leaving room for wire to float when stapled (Do not staple wire tight to post.) When installing line posts make sure that any post that will have strain (vertical or horizontal) on it is stout and secure enough to take the strain. As in wood post 5" to 6" 8' (multiples if necessary) in dips or other low areas and on crowns or high areas. Repeat necessary process for additional wires.

The additional installation of a one or more non-barbed electrified wire can offer an additional pain barrier as well as a feeder wire to barbed wire systems.

Getting better sound and functionality starts with changing your head unit. You'll see step by step what's involved in a car stereo install / wiring up and installing an after market head unit into a vehicle. You'll want to note that this is a deck install in its simplest form. Vehicle with factory amplifiers or complex dis-assembly can create a larger challenge. The NextGen GA Fund has been established to support the rollout of the US NextGen program, which enables updated air traffic information to both pilots and controllers.

We are working exclusively on behalf of the GA community to enable these avionics upgrades using financial incentives, including affordable financing programs and other assistance.

The GA Fund also has successfully established Jumpstart GA 2020, a new program to further incentive small aircraft owners seeking basic ADS-B compliance. To begin, Jumpstart has partnered with L-3 Avionics Systems to offer a basic ADS-B Out only solution at a reduced pricing, available through dealer networks in limited quantity by the summer 2015. Eventually, Jumpstart 2020 intends to reduce costs for a range of next generation products, including ADS-B In and transponders. Dealers interested in learning more can contact the NextGen GA Fund.

The NextGen GA Fund can finance equipment, related electrical systems, instrument panel modifications, antennas, wiring, and installation/certification costs under a single agreement. Any aircraft owneran individual or businessis eligible for financing US-registered piston, turbine and experimental aircraft. This includes all types and ages of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.

The NextGen GA Fund's capital is easy to apply for. Financing terms are highly competitive compared with conventional financing alternatives. Terms will vary for each applicant and are arrived at using commercially accepted consumer lending standards.

Pre-qualification for financing can occur within one day, and funds may be available usually within two days. All applications are held in strict confidence, and such information is never shared with third parties.
