Window installation and Replacement Guide at The Home Depot - September 3, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

If replacing a damaged window, be careful to avoid jagged glass. Center the new window in the opening, supporting it with wood blocks and shims placed below the horizontal jambs. Make sure the window is plumb and level, and adjust the shims if necessary.

Clamp or have a friend hold the moulding in place. If you have vinyl or aluminum siding, you may need to install a J-channel to hold the trim.

Use a circular saw adjusted so the blade depth equals the thickness of the siding. Start the cut with the toe of the saw plate on the siding, but with the blade and heel of the plate above the surface. Slide the saw guard back, start the saw, and ease the blade into the wood. To avoid splintering, stop before the corner. Complete the corner cuts with a sharp chisel.

Cut a length of drip edge to fit over the top of the window, then slide it between the siding and the building paper.

If it has brick mold, apply a continuous bead of caulk around the opening. If it has a nailing fin, apply the caulk to the back of the fin.

Set the window into the opening and push the brick mold or nailing fin tight against the sheathing.

Check to see how much adjustment will be necessary to level and plumb the window unit.

On a level window with brick mold, tack it in place by predrilling and then driving 16d casing nails partway into the top corners of the moulding. If the window is uneven, correct it by shimming below the side jambs and then tacking in place.

Despite the nails you just put in, the window will still move somewhat. Use the shims to center the window in the opening.

Measure the diagonals of the window. If they are equal, the window is square. If not, adjust the shims until the window is square. Always recheck for level and square after you adjust the shims.

If the window has a brick mold, predrill holes in it and drive 16d nails through it and into the framing. If the window has a nailing fin, nail through it into the framing. In either case, start at the corners and space the remaining nails as recommended by the manufacturer. Drive all nail heads below the wood surface with a nail set.

A window with a nailing fin often has a special-order moulding that you apply over it. Install as directed by the manufacturer.

Fill the gaps between the window jambs and the framing members with loosely packed fiberglass insulation.

Trim the shims flush with the framing by scoring them with a utility knife and then snapping off the excess.

Apply paintable silicone caulk around the entire window unit and fill the nail holes with caulk. When the caulk dries, paint to match the trim on the rest of your house.

Replace Window Glass Project Cost – HomeAdvisor - August 27, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

The most common reasons to replace window glass are because the pane is cracked, because the pane is no longer transparent or because the homeowner wants to upgrade to a more efficient type of glass. Most window glass replacements are done because a window has been damaged in some way, which could be due to a storm and high winds, a falling branch or even a stray baseball during a neighborhood game. In some cases, the glass won't get clean. Although this only tends to happen with double or triple-paned windows, it may still be a problem. No matter how much the glass is cleaned, it can still have streaks, condensation or other marks that detract from the home's overall curb appeal and can potentially ruin the view from the interior of the house. Even if a window isn't damaged in any way, the glass may be replaced because it is not energy efficient enough for the homeowner.

Some of the advantages of replacing the glass in a window include an immediate solution to a broken pane, the affordability and the opportunity to upgrade the home. Replacing the entire window, which includes the frame as well as the sash, will be a much lengthier process than simply replacing the pane. Plus, a simple glass replacement is often much less money than replacing the entire window. Even if the actual window is a specialty design, an older frame or anything else that may be pricey to replace, the glass should not be expensive unless it is a customized shape.

Glass replacement can be an easy way to upgrade the panes to something better. Over time, older windows may let in air from the outside and start to transfer temperatures, which reduces energy efficiency in the home. This is not only a problem for the environmentally conscious but also a problem for anyone seeing an increase in their monthly utility bills. Because there are so many different types of glass windows on the market, it is up to each homeowner to determine which type of glass is the best for their home. One of the advantages of glass replacement is that homeowners can upgrade to any of the following options:

Replacing the glass in a window doesn't always require professional assistance, but it may be best if there are several windows to do, if homeowners don't have the right tools or if the window is unusually shaped in any way. The first step in the process will be to remove the broken or old glass. This has to be done safely with gloves and a small hammer as well as a rag to pick up the pieces of glass that fall in the process. Then, the frame can be cleaned and any old putty removed from the edges. If there is any old caulk stuck to the frame, this has to be scraped off to ensure a tight fit for the new piece of glass to be installed. The trim of the frame may have to be removed in order to facilitate this step. Then, the replacement glass can be fitted into the existing frame. It must fit perfectly, or it will need to be cut with a glass cutter to be the right size.

Once in place, glazier's point, or small triangular metal pieces, can be used to hold the glass in the right spot. Then, a thin layer of putty can be applied to the edge of the frame where it meets the glass. The putty should be scraped so that it is completely flat and even. Finally, the putty can either be painted or covered back up with the existing layer of trim to match the rest of the windows in the home. If homeowners have difficulty with any of these steps, a professional can be hired to replace the glass.

The exact cost of window glass replacement can vary based on dozens of different factors. Replacing a standard single pane of glass can be as cheap as buying the pane of glass. However, replacing all the window glass in the entire home and upgrading to a more energy-efficient version as well as hiring professionals to handle the job will be a lot more expensive. The size of the glass being replaced will obviously play a role in the total price with the larger panes being more expensive. Custom glass will also be substantially more expensive. Type of glass is also important; designer windows, low-E glass windows or any other upgrades may raise the final cost of replacement. Finally, it is important to note that a damaged frame that needs to be repaired or replaced will bring additional costs.

Types of Windows: Replacement Window Buying Guide - August 25, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

The view out the window is as important as how much light and ventilation the window provides. Windows connect us to the outdoors and enhance the sense of interior space. For this reason, the placement and size of your windows and what you'll see from them is no small consideration.

Where your windows are placed, how large they are and what type theyhave a significant effect on the amount of light and ventilation they provide.

A south-facing window lets in the most light and is desirable in all but the hottest climates. A north-facing window provides soft, diffused light. Because of the low angle of the sun in the morning and late afternoon, light from east- and west-facing windows maybeintense.

Unfortunately, glass isn't nearly as good at conserving energy as an insulated wall, so glazed doors and windows can be responsible for a major part of a home's energy loss if they're not well-chosen. Storm windows and doors and window coveringshelp retard heat movement, but the surest and most effective way to save energy is to utilize high-performance glazing.

Check two important ratingswhen buying windows and glazed doors: the R-value and the overall U-factor. An R-value measures a material's resistance to heat transfer; the higher the R-value, the better the insulating properties of the glazing. The U-factor measures overall energy-efficiency. It tells you the rate at which heat flows through the entire window, door and frame. The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window or door.

Insulating glazing typically has two, or sometimes three, panes of glass sealed together with either air or argon gas trapped between them to act as an insulator. Some units have a plastic film suspended between two glass panes. If the unit is properly sealed, condensation shouldn't occur between the panes; sometimes a drying agent (called a desiccant) is used in the spacer (the strip inside the panes, which helps keep them apart) as added insurance against condensation.

Window Repair and Restoration – Angie’s List - August 24, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Older windows can be a source of significant heat loss and gain in winter and summer, but replacing them with new, energy-efficient windows can be significantly expensive. Homeowners who are not ready to invest in new windows can curb energy loss by improving the efficiency of existing windows.

Begin by checking for air infiltration or leakage around the window frames. Windows that no longer have a flush, gap-free installation can allow hot or cold air to flow freely into or out of the home. A careful inspection can uncover gaps and cracks that allow warm or cold air to leave or enter the house. One method for detecting gaps between the sash panel and the window framee is to shut the window on a piece of paper. If the paper that pulls out without tearing, the window is no longer airtight and leaks energy.

Air leaks can be corrected inexpensively with weather stripping and caulk. Installing new weather stripping seals the area around the windows, while caulking fills holes and cracks in places where different building materials join. These two materials usually pay for themselves within one year of application.

Silicone, latex, acrylic latex silicone blend and butyl rubber caulking are all useful for filling holes and cracks. First, any old caulk or sealant must be removed with a putty knife or solvent to allow the new caulk to adhere properly. The new caulk should be applied to joints in the frame and the joint between frame and wall when outdoor temperature exceeds 45 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity is low.

Weather stripping consists of narrow strips of vinyl, metal, rubber, foam or felt that are installed around the frame to seal gaps. Pressure-sensitive, adhesive-backed foam is inexpensive, easy-to-apply and can last one to three years. Reinforced foam, attached to metal or wood strips, works well against air infiltration produced by wind gusts, but it can be difficult to install.

Another easy method of preventing winter heat loss and summer heat gain is the installation of insulating shades, shutters and heavy, lined drapes. Homeowners might want to consider folding fabric shades made of cells specifically designed to trap air. These shades provide excellent insulation.
