At the August meeting of the Hot Springs Village recreation committee meeting, members received and gave input on a variety of projects, including activities at Waypoint, Woodlands Auditorium, trails, the mini-golf area, Life Long Learning and a Spring Moonshine Festival.Recreation director Stacey Hoovers report noted the fitness center will be closed this week for annual maintenance and window replacement bids have been received. Also in the report was the fact that Waypoint will be transitioning to the food and beverage division of the POA on Sept. 2 and annual clean-up at Coronado Center is underway.Work also continues at the RV Park, with underbrush being removed to provide better drainage. An irrigation system has been installed at Grove Park and phase two of the Cortez Pavilion has been completed, with the installation of new picnic tables. The final phase will consist of working on the landscape beds.Events mentioned were a Rock Porch session on Sept. 2, a Sept. 8 Friends of Coronado Library Trivia Night and the Bike MS event on Sept. 9-10.Committee chair Donna Aylward said she was impressed with the now-beautiful location on the Lake DeSoto point near Waypoint. She said the night was gorgeous during the most recent Rock Porch session. Parking remains an issue there because of little available space. Aylward said she thinks plans could be improved in anticipation of a large turnout. Outdoor recreation director Charlie Brown said its not easy knowing what to expect in terms of number of attendees at a Waypoint event, and that traffic management and other issues are a real challenge. It was said by another committee member that she felt the stage on the point is too low for those in the audience near the back of the seating area to see the entertainers. Brown added that the space is not conducive to big crowds.Committee member Larry Wilson told everyone he was on hand at Woodlands Auditorium when the recent electrical work was done. There were 560 wires pulled out, said Wilson, who added that he learned much of what was put in back in 1992 was close-out items. There must have been half of a room full of old wiring, he said. Wilson videotapes many events for the Village and said the facility now has proper electrical systems in place for anything that comes down the road.Bags for pet waste were brought up and Aylward asked recreation assistant Valerie Mettler to inform the trails committee about the request. The pickleball proposal for new courts has been postponed, which was an obvious disappointment to pickleball enthusiasts. After CEO Leslie Nalley and COO Linda Mayhood look at the proposal, a recommendation will be made.Refurbishing the tennis courts is also on the committee radar and Brown said it was in the upcoming budget proposal.Questioning the status of the mini golf area took place; is it staying or going away? Aylward said no decision has yet been made. She then asked committee members for ideas for 2018 events. At this point Wilson said that Life Long Learning Institute (LLI) will be partnering with Henderson State University in January 2018. They were very excited that we approached them. We will have their marketing arm to market events, said Wilson. LLI will be working with Henderson on criteria for the organization. We will have National Park resources as well, Wilson added. As for ideas for 2018, a Moonshine Festival was mentioned, which would include a 5K, tasting event and dining on a beach.Another idea put forth was having a quilt show, perhaps with classes. The Quilt Guild is interested in such an event, which could possibly be part of the annual craft fair and draw people from other states.Great idea. Lets see how it may fit in, said Aylward. The recreation committee meets next at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Coronado Community Center.

Jurgen Klopp may have received a major fillip ahead of Liverpools Champions League second leg against Hoffenheim on Wednesday after a report claimed Philippe Coutinho will be staying at the club this season.
Coutinho has been the subject of several huge bids from Barcelonawhich is seeking a replacement for Neymar in the final weeks of the transfer windowthe latest reported to be 114 million ($146.5 million), although that apparently included Coutinho winning multiple Champions Leagues with Barcelona.
Liverpools response to each approach from Barcelona has been the same: a firm no.
Keep up with this story and more by subscribing now
The Guardian reported on Monday that Barcelona was weighing up a fourth offer for Coutinho, 25, who has not featured in either of Liverpools two Premier League games so far this season due to injury.
But the Daily Mirror claims Liverpool has won the battle to keep Coutinho, with the deadline for Liverpool to accept the latest bid having passed on Sunday. Coutinho signed a new five-year contract in January, and Liverpool is under no pressure to sell. Indeed, a sale at this stage even for upwards of 100 million would make it difficult for Liverpool to find a replacement before the transfer window closes on August 31.
That deadline passing means Barcelona has had to give up on the idea that it can lure Coutinho to the Nou Camp this summer. Instead it will have to look elsewhere as it seeks to spend the world-record 200 million it received from Paris Saint-Germain for Neymar.
The news will come as a relief to Klopp, who is attempting to pilot Liverpool through a tricky Champions League playoff tie against Hoffenheim. Liverpool takes a 2-1 lead back to Anfield on Wednesday night, knowing that victory on aggregate over the two legs will secure it safe and lucrative passage through to the Champions League group stages.

Windows not only enhance your homes exterior curb appeal, but they also play a key role in energy efficiency and can directly impact your monthly energy bills. Investing in new windows is a big decision. How do you know when its time to replace them? Answering the questions below can help serve as a guide.
Are Windows Warped or Damaged?Sometimes windows require minor repairs like new weatherstripping, locks or cranks. However, if your window sash or frame is warped or damaged, this kind of concern is often best addressed by replacing the window. If they dont open or close properly or they stick, this is a sign the window might be warped or damaged. Warping can occur over time, especially on older wooden-framed windows. When wood is exposed to water and absorbs it over time, it can become warped or swollen, which can ultimately damage the frame. Also look for cracks in the frames and window panes. Contact a window company, like American Vision Windows, to assess any issues you discover and make a window repair or replacement recommendation.
Are Windows Drafty, Noisy, or Hot/Cold to Touch? If you feel a draft coming in around the windows or they feel hot or cold to the touch, this could be a sign your windows arent sealed or insulated properly. Many homes built before 1970 used single pane windows that are often drafty. Most windows today are double and triple pane windows that offer better insulation (less heat loss) and protection from weather, which ultimately translates to savings on your energy bill. Plus, if youre hearing a lot of outside noise, you may need to invest in new windows that offer better acoustic insulation, to keep unwanted noise outside where it belongs.
Has the Energy Bill Increased? If youve noticed an increase in your monthly energy bill, it could mean that your heating and cooling system is actually throwing energy out the window. Again, this often ties back to older, poorly-insulated windows. An important benefit of new windows is increased energy efficiency which should ultimately result in an energy-saving cost reduction on your energy bill.
Has Your Home Weathered a Storm? If you live in a tornado, hurricane, or earthquake zone or just experienced a really heavy, damage-inducing storm, your windows may have sustained damage. Look for visible signs of damage like cracks, chips, and dents. Also test functionality. If the windows arent opening and closing properly, you may want to consider replacing them.
Are Windows Hard to Clean?New windows are designed with easier cleaning in mind. If you have older windows that are difficult to clean, you may want to save yourself the extra hassle by installing new windows that are much easier to clean and maintain.
Are You Making Home Improvements or Trying to Boost Curb Appeal?Old windows can make a house look shabby, especially if they are front windows, facing out into the neighborhood. If youre looking to make some home improvements and potentially boost curb appeal, installing brand new windows can often be a key component to giving your house the exterior face lift it needs. Bear in mind, if you are restoring a historical home, youll want to install windows that are suited to the look/era of your home. Consult a window expert to get some good professional recommendations. Leading window companies like American Vision Windows offer a variety of window style options to fit many home styles and renovation budgets.

Christian Pulisic impressed for Borussia Dortmund as they fought back against Wolfsburg. Could he be the man to replace Ousmane Dembele if he leaves the club in the transfer window?
Borussia Dortmund fans are used to young, exciting players leaving the club just before theyve hit their peak. Its an unfortunate side effect for any club that enjoys the expertise of scouting and identifying young talent only to then coach them in to the stars of tomorrow.
Despite the relevant experience in coming to terms with such a blow, the current situation with want-away winger Ousmane Dembele is particularly tough to swallow. Since Barcelona announced their interest the young Frenchman has done his utmost to force through a move and has since been banned from first-team training.
When asked to explain the 20-year-olds action teammate Gonzalo Castro didnt mince his word. his behaviour is bad for the team. We must say clearly that this cannot happen, announced the midfielder. And his behaviour is bad for the team.
Yet if Dortmund fans were feeling down about one of their best players throwing his toys out of the pram they needed to wait just 22 minute before they were reminded that should Dembele go they already have a perfect replacement to hand: Christian Pulisic.
The American international opened the scoring against Wolfsburg with a wonderfully placed finish in the first half, and once again unlocked the opposing defence late on in the second half with a pinpoint cross to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to make it three. Amidst an impressive Dortmund performance the young kid from Pennsylvania was undoubtedly the star player.
Indeed any premise of Pulisic kicking off the new season in style was perhaps first suggested in the Super Cup clash with Bayern Munich earlier in the month, when he opened the scoring with a wonderful solo run before pestering the Bavarian defence for the rest of the night. Even the best team in Germany struggled against the young winger.
At just 18 years of age Pulisic is two years younger than Dembele but is by no means two years behind him in his development. Although the French star may be the more established name and now proven in two top European leagues, few Dortmund fans would suggest theres too much between them.
Despite last season being the first full, senior campaign of his career, Pulisic still managed to bag five goals and 13 assists in a Dortmund team that mostly used him as an impact sub late on in Bundesliga and Champions League games. Yet under new coach Peter Bosz it would seem as though hes likely to play a much more significant role this time around.
Indeed, it will the new coach that ultimately decides how Dortmund will look in any post-Dembele scenario. Yet while Marco Reus continues to struggle with injury, Mario Gotze continues his long return from a metabolic condition and new signing Maximilian Philipp settles in at his new club it seems as though the American may be the only free-scoring and free-assisting attacking midfielder Bosz can rely upon.
Pulisic is undoubtedly going to enjoy another great campaign with Dortmund this season but should Dembele leave for Barcelona hes in the perfect position to fill in and take his place as the clubs new wonderkid.

Sixteen of the 20 Premier League clubs are supposedly open to moving the summer transfer deadline to before the start of the season.
The chairman of each top-flight club will vote on the issue next month.
A host of managers have come out in favour of the move, claiming it is bad to start a campaign with an unsettled squad.
But Bilic has bucked the trend and claims the new deadline would mean Liverpool would be unable to sign a replacement if Coutinho were sold to Barcelona.
"I know the clubs are generally in favour of the transfer window closing before the start of next season - but I do foresee some problems," Bilic wrote in the London Evening Standard.
"The window will still be open in other countries and that could lead to players leaving and you not being able to sign replacements, which would make matters even worse.
"Take Liverpool, for example. If that rule changes, it would technically still not stop Philippe Coutinho going to Barcelona but it would prevent Liverpool signing a replacement.
"Yes, it would be better if the window was closed before the start of the season but only if it is right across the rest of the leagues in Europe. Otherwise, it could be even worse than it is now."
Europe's major football leagues all have their transfer windows in place until the end of August.
There is usually a one- or two-day differentiation between European leagues but the Premier League proposal would set the English deadline forward by three weeks.
The Football League has indicated it would follow the Premier League's decision to change the date of deadline day if it was voted on.

Until just recently, one of the great masterpieces of modernist architecture, the Salk Institute, in La Jolla, California, has been shrouded by scaffolding. Designed by Louis Kahn, the institute was completed in 1965. It has been conducting a painstaking, four-year conservation of its iconic teak window walls, and now, with the scaffolding down and the building in full view, AD returned to La Jolla to check it out.
The wooda Southeast Asian teakwas integral to Kahns design and to the clients vision. Though the Salk Institute is just thatan instituteboth its founder, Jonas Salk, and Kahn wanted the place to be a meditative retreat, where scientists could do laboratory benchwork but also have a place for study, contemplation, and even a bit of window-gazing. The wood spoke to that ambition, softening the concrete building and helping to create an environment, separate from the labs, where scientists could think.
Its oceanfront site makes for great views, but the damp, salty air took its toll on the wood. Water would wick into joints, allowing fungus to grow, and termites invaded moist areas of window frames. Because Kahn is known for his unrelenting perfectionism, one of the most offending outcomes of this deterioration was that the fungus did not grow evenly, creating different shades of gray and black.
The institute midrestoration, with scaffolding along the faade.
After making ad hoc fixes over the years, the Salk Institute determined it would approach its own architectural restoration the way it approaches scientific research: with empirical rigor. To do that, it turned to the Getty Conservation Institute and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates. GCI carried out a comprehensive analysis of the window wells, including historical research and testing in a laboratory and on mock-ups, all with an eye toward returning the wood to the way it was originally designed by Kahn.
These are complex, elaborate assemblies, explains Sara Lardinois, a project specialist for GCI, referring to the 203 individual window walls, each of which offers a different combination of sliding windows, louvers, and shutters, linked by custom woodwork.
After its analysis, GCI provided a restoration plan that could be customized for each window, based on the extent of the damage, from minor (cleaning and repair), to moderate (partial replacement of materials), to major (removing windows and replacing pieces with like-for-like materials). Because of the meticulous approach, the Salk Institute was able to restore window walls using mostly minor and moderate interventions, salvaging two-thirds of Kahns original teak.

Submitted by Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
TACOMA, Wash. It was a huge undertaking. A massive window. A precision placement. And it all went swimmingly.
A wave of excitement washed over Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium on Wednesday as a 157-foot-tall construction crane carefully lowered a massive acrylic panel demi-tunnel into place inside the new Pacific Seas Aquarium.
The nearly 35-foot-long, curved sheet of crystal clear acrylic will provide a window into the world of hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and other tropical animals that will live in the Baja Bay exhibit of the 35,000-square-foot aquarium, which is due to open next summer at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
Its placement in an operation that featured huge machinery, precise measurements and a choreographed construction ballet marks a major milestone toward the completion of the new aquarium.
We broke ground on the Pacific Seas Aquarium just over a year ago, zoo Deputy Director John Houck said. We have eagerly watched as footings went in, walls were formed and concrete was poured. Weve noted progress with each passing day, but the installation of this piece was truly an occasion to stop, watch and celebrate. We cant wait until next summer when we begin expanding on the many conservation stories of our seas, from cold waters of Alaska down to the warm waters of the Baja Peninsula.
We remain grateful to the visionary voters of Tacoma, who approved a Metro Parks Tacoma bond issue three years ago to make this aquarium and dozens of other projects across the city a reality, Houck added.
The window installed on Wednesday weighs nearly 12 tons and will sit at the heart of the $51.6 million Pacific Seas Aquarium, a replacement for the now 54-year-old North Pacific Aquarium.
A crane hoists a 12-ton acrylic window up and over the rear wall of the new Pacific Seas Aquarium at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium on Wednesday morning. It will be the window into Baja Bay, a new home to hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and other sea animals.
With its demi-tunnel design that will allow visitors to look up and see fish swimming over their heads, this one water window is likely to capture the hearts of visitors, too.
The hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and eagle rays all newcomers to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium will swim in Baja Bay, the 250,000-gallon centerpiece of the new building.
The window, manufactured by Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc., Grand Junction, Colo., arrived by truck at the entrance to Point Defiance Park in the early morning hours. A crew of flaggers guided the truck on a slow-motion, hour-plus ride through the park until it arrived at its destination inside the construction zone.
Another painstaking process slowly unleashed the acrylic panel from its steel shipping crate, then hooked it to a crane so it could be carefully hoisted aloft some 70 feet, up and over the aquarium building under construction. All the while, work crews made incremental adjustments so that the window could be lowered, inch by inch, into its final position.
But even with all that precision, the final act of hoisting the panel, swinging it into place and lowering it into position took only about two minutes. Construction crews positioned inside the building, however, took much longer to ensure the 6-inch-thick window was correctly set into place, where it will form one of the watertight sides of that huge exhibit.
In addition to the inhabitants of Baja Bay, the new Pacific Seas Aquarium will include new homes for the species that now reside in the North Pacific Aquarium including a giant Pacific octopus and several kinds of jellyfish.
The existing South Pacific Aquarium, which is home to 16 large sharks of five different species, as well as smaller sharks, stingrays and other fish, will remain open. The popular Eye-to-Eye Shark Dive program will continue there.
An architects rendering shows visitors watching scalloped hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and spotted eagle rays in the Baja Bay exhibit of the new Pacific Seas Aquarium at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. It is slated to open in Summer 2018.
Visitors to the new aquarium will enter alongside an outdoor Tidal Surge exhibit, where moving waves will course through a habitat teeming with sea stars, anemones and urchins. Theyll stroll past schools of herring racing around a circular tank with a 4-foot tall, 7-foot wide viewing window. Theyll get a glimpse of the sea life that lurks beneath the ruins of Galloping Gertie, the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which twisted apart and collapsed into Puget Sound in 1940. Theyll see jellyfish, giant Japanese spider crabs and more as they continue their journey toward Baja Bay.
The new aquarium is being built on a spot between the zoos Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater and the Rocky Shores area, home to marine mammals like Pacific walruses, California sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters.
Its the largest capital project in the 112-year history of Metro Parks Tacoma. It is funded largely from the $198 million bond issue approved by voters in 2014.
Turner Construction is the general contractor and construction manager for the project.
An architects rendering shows visitors watching scalloped hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and other sea animals in the Baja Bay habitat of the Pacific Seas Aquarium, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2018 at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
