PELLA, Iowa, Feb. 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energy-efficient window and door manufacturer Pella donated $30,000 to the non-profit organization Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) and helped raise additional cash, building materials and labor to support the national cause through its partners in THE PRO EXPO Presented by PellaSM program.
Pella selected Homes for Our Troops -- which builds homes for severely injured U.S. service members and their families -- as its charitable partner for THE PRO EXPO Presented by Pella held in 30 U.S. and Canadian markets in 2011. Pella asked its national partners and professionals who attended events to help support the charitable cause.
"Through THE PRO EXPO Presented by Pella events, we bring together builders, remodelers, contractors and architects to network, share ideas and attend educational seminars," said Chris Dana, trade marketing manager at Pella. "We were also proud to help raise awareness and support for Homes for Our Troops to help those who've sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom."
How to help
Donations can be made through Homes for Our Troops' secure online fundraising site. For more information about home builds, visit the Homes for Our Troops website.
Non-profit helps severely injured veterans
Since it was founded in 2004, Homes for Our Troops has assisted severely injured veterans and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials, and professional labor and coordinates the process of building a specially-adapted home that enables an injured veteran to live more independently. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at no cost to the veterans.
"Many veterans are returning home from wars in Iraq or Afghanistan with life-altering injuries sustained while defending the United States overseas," said Dawn Teixeira, executive director of Homes for Our Troops. "These American heroes need specially adapted homes that will allow them to regain their independence and help them and their families rebuild their lives."
Injuries include the loss of one or more limbs, varying levels of paralysis and traumatic brain injury. Some veterans also return with blindness, deafness or severe burns. They may be confined to a wheelchair or may utilize a wheelchair when they are unable to walk on their prosthetics. Their homes are no longer a place of comfort, but rather filled with barriers that make the simplest tasks difficult, if not impossible, Teixeira said.
Homes designed for accessibility
Homes for Our Troops' specially adapted homes go beyond Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. They typically feature single-level, open floor plans, roll-in showers, roll-under cooktops and sinks, and other standard accessibility items. Depending on the severity of the injury sustained by the veteran, homes may also include specialized items like lift systems, keyless door entry and voice activation controls.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) February 16, 2012
For customers who wish to maintain the interior look of wood windows with the performance benefits of vinyl, Champion Window introduces their new TimberBond® line of replacement windows. This new technology fuses a long-lasting and realistic interior wood appearance, in either English oak, dark oak or cherrywood, to Champion’s already energy efficient vinyl window; complete with Champion’s exclusive Comfort 365 Glass®.
“Many homeowners cherish the charm of traditional wood windows but not the maintenance associated with them; meanwhile, others have tried windows with wood grain laminates or veneers fixed to the vinyl only to find the laminate or veneer fade, peel or crack over time,” said Denny Manes, Chief Executive Officer of Champion Window. “Champion’s proprietary TimberBond process fuses the wood-grain finish to the vinyl, keeping the color bonded to the surface without the worry of peeling or cracking.”
Watch a video about TimberBond Here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Championwindows
TimberBond utilizes the same technology that high-end automobile manufacturers use to create wood finishes in their cars. This state-of-the-art transfer process bonds the woodgrain pigment to the vinyl, creating an authentic looking and long-lasting wood appearance.
“By providing this technology, a first-of-its-kind in the window industry, Champion enhances its position as an industry leader providing customers with innovative, high-quality home improvement options for their window, siding, and patio room needs,” added Manes.
TimberBond vinyl replacement windows feature a real wood look in the interior with a choice of white, tan or any of Champion’s ColorBond™ Window colors to add an architectural element to the exterior of a home, that will increase its value and curb appeal while saving energy and maintenance.
The new TimberBond line is designed to be just as energy efficient as every replacement window manufactured by Champion; all are ENERGY STAR® rated, have earned the Good Housekeeping seal and carry the AAMA gold label. Plus, every Champion replacement window features Champion’s exclusive Comfort 365® glass, a superior glass that ensures a home will be energy efficient and that carpet, drapes and furniture will resist fading.
Started in 1953, Champion Window is one of the nation’s leading home improvement companies. Champion manufactures, sells and installs vinyl replacement windows, entry doors and patio rooms. It also sells and installs siding. More than 40,000 homeowners join the ranks of customers on an annual basis. Lead Paint Hazards and Older Windows -
February 15, 2012 by
Mr HomeBuilder
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- If your home was built before 1978 and you still have the original windows, it's time to seriously consider replacing your windows --- especially if you have young children or a pregnant person living at home.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120215/NY52241)
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the routine opening and closing of windows in homes built prior to 1978 can disturb lead-based paint around the windows, causing paint dust and chips to be released into the air. These lead particles are so potentially dangerous that the EPA now requires contractors to be trained and certified before they can perform any renovation, repair or painting projects that may have previously applied lead-based paint.
"Research indicates that the everyday activity of opening and closing windows creates friction that then allows invisible lead dust to enter the air," says Rick Nevin, a consultant to the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH). "Young children, who crawl on the floor where the lead dust has settled, can be especially at risk. Toddlers put their hands in their mouths … and after playing on the floor near a window, they can easily transfer the lead dust into their mouths. The ingested lead travels through the bloodstream to a child's developing brain, causing many types of neurobehavioral damage."
According to Nevin, one of the most important long-term investments a homeowner can make for the overall safety of a family is to replace older windows, using the EPA-approved lead safe renovation guidelines. "Replacing older windows is one of the best ways to reduce lead risks," says Nevin. "Make sure to use only a contractor that is certified in lead-safe work practices and strongly consider the use of ENERGY STAR® qualified windows, like the vinyl replacement windows offered by Simonton Windows®. These windows are a healthy choice for replacing older single-pane units. They're energy-efficient and a good value for the investment."
"At Simonton, we advocate that replacing older windows coated with lead-based paint with vinyl windows is a sensible step for homeowners who want to create a healthier home environment," says Gary Pember with Simonton Windows. "We believe Rick's research substantiates the replacement of all windows coated with lead based paint as a way to dramatically help reduce lead dust within that home."
Nevin explains that, according to his research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), homeowners need to understand there are four key steps to completing a "lead-safe window replacement strategy" for the home. "First, they advise replacing all single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR qualified windows," says Nevin. "Second, stabilize any significantly deteriorated paint. Third, perform specialized cleaning to remove any lead-contaminated dust. And finally, perform dust wipe tests to confirm the absence of lead dust hazards after the clean up." Research results can be obtained at http://www.ricknevin.com/windows.html.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Window Film Association (IWFA), a nonprofit group, is offering a free booklet on today's advanced window films. The booklet outlines how window film can be professionally installed to bring windows that are in good condition, up to modern standards.
"Many consumers are deciding for a variety of factors to stay in place and are looking for ways to improve the curb appeal and efficiency of their homes," said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA. "Window film is a long-term and cost-effective solution for home improvement challenges. It can reduce energy consumption by reducing solar heat gain, and reduce the carbon footprint, while allowing you to enjoy natural light without the negative impact of harsh glare and UV exposure," he added.
The booklet can be downloaded at the IWFA website: http://www.iwfa.com/ConsumerInfo/IWFAWindowFilmBooklet.aspx. It gives consumers unbiased expertise on a less commonly known, but powerful home enhancement that adds value immediately and provides long-term return on investment through energy savings and extending the life of older windows without changing their character or architectural integrity.
Window film is rated by the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council), as are new windows and doors, so homeowners and property managers can be sure of the benefits. The new booklet helps consumers understand more about how window film delivers up to seven times the energy savings per dollar spent, as compared to installing replacement windows.
Homeowners or commercial building owners can locate IWFA member dealers on the IWFA website. Visitors can also request an energy saving analysis or learn more about how window film increases comfort, security and peace of mind.

The new 490,000-square-foot Kaiser Permanente Fontana Replacement Hospital is now 95 percent completed and is in the home stretch of final exterior and interior construction.
The hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2013, is being built by McCarthy Construction and is designed by HMC Architects.
The new hospital will be a cutting-edge acute care medical facility which will serve the Inland Empire with 314 beds and a 51-bed emergency department.
On the heels of the opening of Kaiser Permanente's Ontario Medical Center last fall, the Fontana Replacement Hospital will have similar patient-centric design features to create a healing environment for patients in which to heal in, Kaiser officials said.
Every patient room will be private with a window for natural sunlight, there will be a beautiful outdoor courtyard and patients will enjoy room service-style meal delivery, giving them the flexibility to order food when they are actually hungry.
Additionally, medical specialty services will include: Cardiac Surgery Services, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Inpatient Dialysis, Intensive Care Unit, Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, NICU level III, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatrics and Surgery.
"The new Fontana Replacement Hospital will allow us to care for patients in a new environment which patients will find comforting and healing at a first-class, medical facility with the latest healthcare innovations and medical technologies," said David Quam, MD, area medical director for the Fontana & Ontario service area. "The Fontana Medical Center is a flagship provider of compassionate and quality healthcare to residents in the Inland Empire and is led by expert physicians and medical staff who are committed to providing the best care."
Looking ahead to 2013, one way that the new Fontana Replacement Hospital will celebrate its grand opening is with a commemorative historical look at its early humble beginnings, which started in the high desert as a prepaid health plan for Kaiser Steel employees and then moved in 1943 to the Kaiser Steel Corporation in Fontana. An historical book accounting the medical center's many milestones in patient care will be published when the new hospital opens.
"We will be celebrating 70 years of care to this community when the new
Fontana Medical Center opens in 2013," said Greg Christian, executive director for the Fontana and Ontario Medical Centers. "Fontana is really the birthplace of Kaiser Permanente's prepaid integrated care delivery system. Mr. Henry Kaiser's Health Care partnership with Dr. Sidney Garfield has led to the nation's largest Health Maintenance Organizations and a measured leader in quality, service, technology and innovation. We are excited and honored to keep this legacy moving and in a direction that provides on-going award-winning and affordable care."

Replacement window and door industry leader Soft-Lite LLC shares its 2012 plans to ensure continued success. Strategies include ongoing dealer support and a growing turnkey installation service.
Streetsboro, Ohio (PRWEB) February 09, 2012
After weathering a difficult 2011 that witnessed the struggles of many replacement window manufacturers, industry leader Soft-Lite LLC has 2012 plans in place to ensure the Ohio-based company’s continued success.
That success is focused on providing continual training and support, all in an effort to nurture the success of Soft-Lite’s dealers.
“Soft-Lite’s ability to remain a successful, debt-free manufacturer of replacement windows and doors depends on our dealers and distributors’ ability to sell, install and support our products,” Soft-Lite VP of Sales and Marketing, Greg Irving said.
The long-time manufacturer of replacement windows and doors offers a whole range of support for its dealers and distributors, including:
Soft-Lite also provides dealer support through its innovative, and growing, turnkey installation service. This program allows the company to capitalize on new geographic market areas where dealers may not have adequate infrastructure to manage the logistics of installing Soft-Lite’s numerous replacement window and door lines after the initial sale.
In the end, Soft-Lite’s most important contribution toward the success of its dealers and distributors is the company’s own ability to reinvest in its operations and still remain debt-free and stable, Anderson said.
“We’ve been careful to reinvest in research and development and to selectively allocate capital to planned expansions, technological improvements and product development,” Soft-Lite President, Roy Anderson said. “We will not accept being second best in any aspect of our business model, whether it's in manufacturing capability, product development or dealer support.”
Backed by 75+ years of experience, Soft-Lite offers a diverse product line, including fiberglass entry door systems, all welded storm doors, new woodgrain laminates, and a new sliding patio door line. Visit Soft-Lite’s website for more information on the Streetsboro-headquartered manufacturer of replacement windows and doors.
