A South Jersey Glass & Door crew replaces the Vineland Soup Kitchen office window, damaged by a rock-hurling vandal, at no cost to the ministry. Vineland Daily Journal
VINELAND An act of violence targeting the Vineland Soup Kitchen is bringing the community together to put it right.
So many people came forward, it turned something negative into a positive, soup kitchen volunteer Tony Centeno told The Daily Journal on Monday.
Over the weekend, someone hurled a rock that shattered the front window of the nonprofits East Landis Avenue office, which also serves as a storage facility.
The ministry, with no extra money to fund the repair, appealed for financial assistance. After volunteers installed plywood over the damage and swept up glass shards, offers of help came in from as far away as California.
Its amazing, the generosity of people that weve experienced, said Darlene Fielder, the soup kitchen director. My cell phone has been blowing up all weekend, people calling out of nowhere, people calling anonymously wanting to donate money to pay for the window.
A few soup kitchen supporters, including Lori Pepper King of Vineland, reached out to South Jersey Glass & Door.
I felt a tugging on my heart this morning from God and felt very strongly that I needed to do something,"she said.I contacted South Jersey Glass this morning.
But the South West Boulevard company was already on it and let King know that they were installing the glass at no charge to the soup kitchen.
It brought me to tears; our wonderful local community supporting each other, Kingsaid. God works wondrous deeds.

By Monday evening, the shattered 5-by-8-foot window was replaced.
The South Jersey Glass and Doormanagement and employees shunned any accolades, saying helping the soup kitchen during a tough time was just the right thing to do.
To help protect the office in the future, another donor is providinga security system, Fielder said.
Many others are making donations to support the soup kitchen, hosted by Spirit and Truth Ministries, said Matt Milam, the organization's board of trustees president, thanking the community for its show of support.
Meanwhile on social media, many wondered who could do the soup kitchen harm. Soup kitchen officialssaid they weren't notified of an arrest of asuspect, who reportedly wore a mask.
The vandalism did not impact themission to feedthose in need. Food is prepared in the kitchen locatedin the First United Methodist Church basementat Seventh Street and Landis Avenue.
On Monday, they nudged their output up to 175 meals, nearly double their pre-COVID-19 numbers. The pork chops, broccoli and fried cabbage takeouts quickly disappeared into the hands of those who showed up.
We were just discussing tomorrow, Im going to make 200 meals, Fielder said.
Withincreasing demand for hot meals, there areno worries just yet about bare cupboards.
The supply chain is currently stable through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, based in Egg Harbor Township, and the Gateway Community Action Partnership of Bridgeton.
Were going to be fine;we know how to stretch food out, Fiedler said.
Its the unforeseen expenses that they need to hurdle.
The main expense is takeout containers and utensils. With coronavirus-related regulations closing their dining room, the soup kitchen must package meals to grab and go.
To arrange a donation, please call Spirit and Truth Ministries at 856-692-2603.
Contributions may be mailedto Spirit & Truth Ministries, P.O. Box 89, Vineland, N.J. 08362.

Megans Coffee Corner closed Saturday, Feb. 29, marking a decade in Bellevue. The coffee hut, which boasts two drive-thru and one walk-up window, will be replaced by a drive-thru only Starbucks.
If you ask locals, theyll tell you they are happy to have a Starbucks in the neighborhood, just like the one inside the Safeway about 500 feet from where Megans Coffee Corner sits. Or the Starbucks less than a mile away on 156th Avenue Southeast. What locals are not happy about is Starbucks adding another location by supplanting a local coffee stand.
The coffee stand originally opened under different ownership, in 1995. Megan Stoa, who started working at the coffee stand in 2001 and bought it in 2010, said she was disappointed to close down the shop, especially since it would be replaced by a corporate chain.
While her landlord is well within the legal rights, Stoa said she was alerted that he would not be renewing their lease on Feb.7, after a letter from earlier was sent to an old address.
It was heartbreaking. This is one of the last real neighborhoods in the area, Stoa said of her store closure and other local shop closures. You share a connection with many of the customers that Im just not sure a corporate chain will have.
Stoa said she was looking forward to spending more time with her kids and the lack of 3 a.m. alarms.
Karen Seely, a local to Bellevue for the last 18 years, said she has grown a special bond with the staff at Megans Coffee Corner.
Theyre more like family, Seely said. Ive even had a couple of (the staff) house sit for me and dog sit for me.
Seely admitted that as a business owner herself (she owns a hot tub service and repair company) she is partial to female-owned businesses in the community, but Im also partial to trying to keep our community, a community, she said. Theyre more than just drive-by and order a cup of coffee. Theyre very, very dear people.
A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed the company would be opening a new store at that location this summer.
Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers and we are happy to confirm we will be opening a new location at 15100 SE 38th St. in Bellevue this summer, the spokesperson said. The drive-thru only store will employ approximately 15 partners (employees).
Seely said her experiences with Stoas staff have added more to her life than just friendly moments and dog sitting. She said shes gotten business through connections to other customers and that the staff at Megans will often help her find service from other businesses. Seely said her community NextDoor page (a social media for neighbors) was upset to hear that a local staple would no longer be in their community.
One of the baristas Seely has grown close to is Laura French, who has worked at the shop since 2016, commuting 45 minutes to an hour a day for work.
At first, I was kind of just trying to find a job to get me by, but once I started working here the environment was like something youve never really felt before, French said. We have a bond with our customers they tell us about their personal stuff were all friends here.
French complimented her boss work ethic, care for employees and kindness overall.
Stoa said she gained those traits from her great-grandfather, who started a carpet business, and her grandfather and mother who later inherited the business.
I grew up in a family business atmosphere, Stoa said. I learned that if the employees arent happy, the customers wont be happy.
Stoa, French and Seely all said they would miss the community of the coffee shop the most. Getting to know each other, and each others families, was what Stoa said inspired her to keep getting up at 3 a.m.
Im going to miss the customers in particular the dogs (Im going to miss) seeing kids and their pets grow up, Stoa said. Ive felt like Im going through a breakup. Im going through a real grieving process.

Microsoft is working on Server Message Block (SMB) over QUIC technology for use with "Windows, Windows Server, and Azure Files," according to a Monday announcement.
SMB over QUIC can serve as a virtual private network (VPN) alternative for securing mobile device connections. It can optionally replace "TCP/IP and RDMA" (Remote Direct Memory Access) protocols, as well, explained Ned Pyle, a principal program manager in the Windows Server engineering group. QUIC is seen as being a more secure protocol than TCP.
"Unlike TCP, QUIC isalwaysencrypted and requires TLS 1.3 [Transport Layer Security 1.3] with certificate authentication of the tunnel," Pyle added.
By using SMB over QUIC, Microsoft will just be replacing the transport protocol part.
"All SMB authentication still happens normally within the TLS tunnel (as if it was a VPN) so SMB is not relying on cert-based identity or auth -- it will still use NTLM or Kerberos (with KDC proxy)," Pyle explained in the comments section of Microsoft's announcement. "This model is just swapping out the transport, SMB is unchanged."
The idea behind SMB over QUIC is to prevent spoofing and man-in-the-middle attacks, including "NTLM [Windows NT LAN Manager] challenges," Pyle indicated. He also explained that the user experience won't change. TCP and RDMA get used, but QUIC transport also happens, and the end result is "seamless to the end user and their apps."
Pyle said that "QUIC's already in use in Windows 10 through the Edge browser and other apps,"but the arrival time for SMB over QUIC isn't yet known. He showed a demo of it, though, in the announcement.
QUIC, which stands for "Quick UDP Internet Connections," was developed by Google, which has its own "gQUIC" version that's currently used in Google Chrome Web browsers, according to Wikipedia's description.
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) currently maintains a draft of QUIC, but "QUIC" is considered to be the name of the protocol and not an acronym, according to the IETF. Wikipedia further explained that the IETF is planning to name "the HTTP mapping over QUIC 'HTTP/3' in advance of making it a worldwide standard."

Check the caulking around the windowBroken or missing caulking will allow water and the wind to penetrate the walls and cause moisture damage and rotting over time. Caulking acts as the first line of defense against water penetration into the wall structure.
Look for signs of worn weatherstrippingIn slider and hung windows, weatherstripping is a crucial element in preventing drafts and heat loss. As the window gets older, the weatherstripping wears out and deteriorates. Most weatherstripping today is peel and stick, and you can replace it yourself.
Check your window for sealed unit failureA chipped or cracked glass pane may seem like a visual nuisance, but the problem may be much bigger than meets the eye. If your glass panes are put together in a sealed unit, there is a good chance there may be a gas fill between the glass panes to improve the windows efficiency. If the glass pane is cracked, the seal in the window may be broken causing the gas to leak and your home to lose heat. It is often possible to change just the sealed unit in the window without having to replace the whole window.
Monitor air humidity in your homeBecause warm air contains more moisture than cold air, it is common for windows to form condensation on the glass. If left to stand this condensation can cause mold growth on windows or be absorbed into wood window components, eventually leading to rotting. Some people resort to buying dehumidifiers for their homes, but lowering the thermostat a couple of degrees or simply ventilating the room can reduce the levels of humidity significantly.
Dont wait to replace problem windows or doors. Save yourself money on your energy bill and beat mold and wood rot to the punch. Speak with the experts at R&L Contractors and Amazing Windows and Doors today!

The Massachusetts School Building Authoritys board of directors on Thursday approved four school roof replacements in Worcester and four other projects in the region.
In Worcester, Tatnuck Magnet School, Vernon Hill School and Worcester East Middle School will receive funding from the MSBA to fully replace their roofs, while Burncoat Street Preparatory School got the OK for a partial roof replacement.
In addition, the board approved a boiler replacement at Lincoln Street School.
Combined, those five projects are expected to cost close to $10 million; the MSBA will cover about 75% of that total.
Elsewhere in the region, the MSBA directors also on Thursday approved $2.3 million of an expected $3.1 million needed to replace part of the roof and boiler at Fitchburgs South Street Elementary School; $751,188 for a $1.5 million partial roof replacement at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School; and $365,276 of the $1.2 million required to replace the boiler at Southboros Mary E. Finn Elementary School.
All of those projects are to be completed through the MSBAs Accelerated Repair Program, which is intended to help pay for roof, boiler, and window and door replacements in a relatively quick time frame.
"The Accelerated Repair Program allows us to make critical repairs to more schools in less time," state Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, whose office oversees the MSBA, said in a statement, adding that the projects "make schools more energy efficient and generate significant cost savings."
Worcester in particular has benefited from the program, submitting and getting approved for around four projects a year over the last decade. This year, the district has shifted its focus from window and door replacements to upgrading roofs; according to the school departments budget book last year, it planned to submit 15 school roof replacements to the MSBA for approval from 2019 through 2023.
While almost all of those schools are elementary schools, one of the exceptions is Worcester East Middle, a nearly century-old school that has regularly been on the districts submission list to the MSBA for a more comprehensive replacement or renovation.
But school officials decided the roof project couldnt wait for the school to be accepted into the authoritys core project pipeline. Worcester East Middle currently sits behind Burncoat High School as the districts No. 2 priority for replacement/renovation, meaning it could be years or even a decade before the school is rebuilt or renovated, given the MSBAs lengthy approval process for comprehensive building projects.
While Worcester East Middle is in the MSBAs Accelerated Repair Program, it wont be able to be submitted as a core project, according to Brian Allen, the districts chief financial and operations officer. Typically, Accelerated Repair Projects are completed in a year and a half.
"But once the roof is completed, we still intend to submit for full renovation under the core program," Allen said, adding the district still sees it as the second most pressing school construction project behind Burncoat.

Windows 10 is experiencing a spectacularly bad run of faulty updates recently, and if youve had enough, then Windows 12 Lite is promising to fix those issues.
Now, we should say straight away that this is not an official release from Microsoft. Instead, it appears to be a modified version of the Linux Lite 4.8 LTS distro made to look like Windows 10 with the default background wallpaper and custom icons.
Windows 12 Lite was spotted by a reddit user at a local computer sale, and according to the documentation that comes with the software (which is actually a crudely-printed sheet of A4), using Windows 12 Lite means No upgrading when ever you want to work. No upgrades that fail so you cannot upgrade clearly referencing Windows 10s recent travails.
It also makes the bold claim that there are no virus or ransomware as Windows 12 is immune from these nasties.
It also says that Windows 12 Lite is more than three times faster than Windows 10 and boots in about 15 seconds.
As well as the badly-printed out manual, there is also a rather ropey-looking website, which at least is honest about it being Linux Lite 4.8 LTS made to look like Windows 10.
Apparently, the seller was offering DVDs of Windows 12 Lite for 15 (around $20, AU$30) at the computer sale and while thats certainly cheaper than a Windows 10 licence you should never buy random software like that and you should never pay to use free Linux distros like Linux Lite.
While Windows 12 Lite is clearly not going to replace Windows 10, it does raise some interesting points about how Linux could be a good alternative for people who are getting sick of Microsofts mishandling of Windows 10.
There are many lightweight distros out there that run much faster than Windows 10 especially on older hardware, and because not as many people use Linux versus Windows, there are fewer viruses and malware threats as well.
And, as Windows 12 Lite shows, you can configure Linux to look and behave very similar to Windows. Check out our pick of the best Linux distros for beginners for better choices for replacing Windows 10 with Linux.

Transfers to replace injured Adam Forshaw at Leeds United in January were not considered because of the cost and level of midfielder required.
Head coach Marcelo Bielsa addressed the matter of Forshaws hip surgery in Thursdays press conference after it had been announced the midfielders season was over.
Forshaw went under the knife on Thursday in Colorado and will now look to return to action in pre-season ahead of 2020/21.
One of the main tenets of Bielsas tenure at Elland Road has been his refusal to run with anything other than a small squad.
When a key cog in that unit is ruled out, their absence is keenly felt. Furthermore, when their season is prematurely ended less than two weeks after the latest transfer window ends, there are question marks around contingency plans.
Elia Caprile, Ian Poveda and Jean-Kevin Augustin were the only three additions last month. Forshaw, despite his aborted attempts to return, was not directly replaced.
Bielsa explained why and acknowledged it is troubling to have planned a campaign for an 18-man squad and then lose a regular starter permanently.
I would like to count on Forshaw, he said. We resolve this situation with [Kalvin] Phillips, with [Mateusz] Klich, but when you plan one season with 18 players it is not the same as when you have to struggle with less players.
If we bring in another player, always we have to bring in a better player and better means, in every sense, not just in skills, resources, if not one player who can compete right now.
We can bring one player like that paying a lot of money.
Augustins status in the squad has already been discussed at length by Bielsa, who has repeatedly pointed to the Frenchmans limited minutes across the past 12 months and inadequate fitness for his system.
Evidently, this need to hit the ground running also played on Bielsas mind when it came to any proposed Forshaw replacement.
Also, it is understood the Whites do not have a sizeable space in their Profit and Sustainability projections to accommodate such an investment.
