More than 150 London-bound Ryanair passengers were left grounded for seven hours yesterday after what was described as a minor technical issue.
Flight FR102 from Shannon to London Stansted was due to depart at 6.15am but it was delayed because of a cracked cockpit window. The passengers had already boarded their flight when some received a text message from Ryanair advising that their departure would be delayed.
This text message arrived before any announcement was made by the flight crew and advised passengers that their new departure time would be 10.30am. Passengers were taken back to the terminal.
A replacement window was flown in from Stansted, arriving at Shannon at 9.36am.
Some passengers asked if they could transfer to a later Gatwick flight but they were told their aircraft would be ready and in the air before the Gatwick service departed. This however was not the case.
Passenger Jay Briganti said: We were already boarded and the plane was fully loaded. Everyone was ready to go, but they hadnt closed the door. Then at 6.26am I got a text message about the delay before anything had even been announced on board.
The captain came on about a minute later saying there was a fault and they would need to wait two hours for engineers to update them on situation and that we would have to get off the plane, Mr Briganti added.
At about 9am they handed out vouchers for 5 which wouldnt even cover the cost of a soup and the only place they could be used was in the airport restaurant.
Passengers were then told to return to the gate to prepare for boarding for a second time. From the departure gate, they could see where the faulty window was still not replaced.

A change of manager at Tottenham Hotspur has not acted as a spark for Erik Lamela, according to Darren Lewis of the Mirror, as he suggests the midfielder still wants to leave on loan in January.
Prior to Andre Villas-Boas exit, there was talk of a loan move to Atletico Madrid for the summer recruit from Roma.
Tim Sherwood is now in charge, and handed Lamela a start in the win at Southampton.
Lewis, though, feels Lamelas mindset has not changed and claims the Argentine will push for a move in January in a bid to secure his place in his countrys World Cup squad.
If Lewis is correct, there could be a clash come January as he claims Tottenham have no intention of letting Lamela leave on loan.
In his piece, Lewis wrote:
Although he has publicly declared he is up for the challenge of breaking into the Spurs team, his private frustrations are well known and have attracted interest from a number of top European clubs.
Spurs, however, have no intention of farming Lamela out and retain high hopes for him.

One of the biggest reasons to replace your home's windows is to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. But how do you compare the energy efficiency among differing window products? Look at the labels.
Windows that feature an Energy Star label have passed standards tests that prove that the products meet minimum criteria for energy efficiency. Energy Star-rated products typically cost more than traditional products, but also offer great energy savings in reduced utility bills. For more information on how window products qualify for the Energy Star label visit the Energy Star website.
Another energy efficiency indicator on new window products is a label from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The NFRC is a non-profit organization that independently assesses and issues energy ratings for window products.
NFRCs testing of window energy performance is also a key component of Energy Star ratings. According to the Council, window products that carry the NFRC label have been tested to ensure that their advertised energy-efficiency claims are accurate.
Window energy efficiency terms
NFRC labels carry important information about a windows energy performance, which are expressed in two primary efficiency measures.
1. Solar heat gain co-efficient (SHGC)
SHGC indicates how much heat from sunlight a window can block. Expressed as number between 0 and 1, the lower a windows SHGC rating, the more heat from sunlight it can block. For instance a window with a SHGC of 0.35 will allow more heat to pass through the window than a product with a SHGC of 0.27.
2. U-factor

(Reuters) - Swansea City striker Michu faces ankle surgery that will rule him out for six weeks and may push the injury-hit Welsh club to seek a replacement in the January transfer window.
The Spaniard underwent a scan on his injured ankle after missing Sunday's 2-1 home defeat by Everton. The 27-year-old, who has scored six goals in all competitions this season, has had ankle and knee problems in recent months.
"It's not good news," manager Michael Laudrup told the club website (www.swanseacity.net) on Tuesday. "Unfortunately it has been confirmed that he will need an operation.
"The good news is that it can be done in the next week - and he should be back playing in around a month and a half.
"But what has happened in the last couple of weeks has changed things. We will probably do something now - in January - and try to add something that we don't have in certain positions," said Laudrup.
"The numbers are a bit down and that is risky for the last four months of the season."
Laudrup said he could sign Spanish forward Iago Aspas, 26, on loan from Liverpool.
"He is an interesting player but he is at Liverpool and they have injuries as well so that might not be possible," he added. "We are looking at other options."
Swansea, 11th in the Premier League, face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. They then travel to Aston Villa on Saturday before hosting free-scoring Manchester City on January 1.
The club have received a boost after Welsh defender Ben Davies, 20, signed a new contract until 2017.
