SEPTEMBER 6 The summer transfer window for English Premier League (EPL) clubs has finally closed, and this one has turned out to be a real big (and record breaking) one. A total of 835 million (RM4.34 billion) was spent, dwarfing the total amounts spent in other major European leagues like the La Liga (425 million), Serie A (260 million) and the Bundesliga (250 million).
Whichever club you support, transfer spending this big can only mean one thing more star names and more excitement, therefore more reasons to not only watch games involving the clubs you support, but also other clubs games as well. Lets look at the clubs who have done the best business this summer.
Chelsea
The undoubted winner of this transfer window is Chelsea. Theyve done their business quickly and quietly, signing Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis to bolster their impressive squad and bringing in quite handsome sums from selling David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku. And with their deadline day capture of Loic Remy, they have more or less solved their only one big squad gamble before this (which is an almost total reliance on the striking prowess of Costa) by bringing in a back-up that most EPL teams would definitely want in their first team. As their early season form has already proven, this seasons title is theirs to lose.
Manchester United
Their squad still looks a bit unbalanced, with way too many attacking players vying for maybe four, or at most five first team spots. But any team that manages to bring in Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria to add to a strike force that already has Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata, not to mention rising star Adnan Januzaj, is some sort of winner already. Their acquisition of Daley Blind will probably turn out to be the most important of all their summer transfers as he looks certain to be the one to plug that big defensive hole in their midfield that has been left vacant ever since the day Roy Keane left the club. Will all this take them back into the top four? Judging from their awful early season (still no wins in their first four matches), anything can happen with this squad.
Southampton
They looked like big losers after selling prized assets like Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert, but with the deadline day loan of defended Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid adding to their already highly promising summer deals for Dusan Tadic (whos already impressed everyone with his silky skills), Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster, its not turning out so bad for them at the close of the transfer window. Alderweireld may very well prove to be an upgrade on Lovren, and so does Tadic on Lallana, and Pelle has already scored his debut goal and may also turn out to be just the right replacement for Lambert (remember, they still have Jay Rodriguez with them).
Hull City
Outside of the arrival of Radamel Falcao to Manchester United and Danny Welbecks move to Arsenal, the biggest surprise of deadline day may actually be the number of creating attacking players that Hull City has managed to assemble. Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez and Abel Hernandez are all flair players who can produce moments of real magic when theyre on song, and when you can now pick a midfield and attack which includes those names like Nikica Jelavic, Tom Ince, Tom Huddlestone and Mo Diame, this may be the best time to be a Hull City fan, ever, especially considering that only 11 years ago they were in the bottom tier of English football.
Installing new windows can offer many benefits. They can make your home less drafty and more attractive, they're easier to clean, and some come pre-painted.
However, putting in new windows just to save on your energy bills isn't a good reason.
"Sure, new windows could lower your energy bills by as much as 15 percent, but you're going to spend $10,000-$20,000 buying and installing those new windows. So it could be decades before you recoup the cost," said Dan DiClerico, Consumer Reports.
With replacement windows, the most popular styles are double-hung and casement.
Consumer Reports tested both types.
In their lab, testers can see how dozens of windows stand up to the elements, like heavy, wind-driven rain.
Each test is performed in different climates - a mild 70-degrees and then at zero degrees Fahrenheit.
Consumer Reports found that higher prices don't always guarantee better performance.
They recommend the $300 Pella double-hung window. It's better at keeping out drafts than windows costing twice as much.
If you prefer a casement style window, all four that Consumer Reports tested performed well in the cold climate tests.
