Garcia: Roma will sign a replacement for Destro - January 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mattia Destro's departure has left Roma short of strikers and head coach Rudi Garcia will sign a replacement before the transfer deadline.

Roma coach Rudi Garcia has stated his intention tosign a replacement for Mattia Destro before the end of the transfer window.

Italy international Destro departed for Serie A rivals Milan on Friday, the striker initially joining on loan with an optionto make the move permanent.

Garciainsisted earlier this monththat Destro would not be sold andthe striker's departure has left a void.

The Frenchman insists a replacement will be brought in, however, andwants histeam to focus on Saturday's clash with Empoli at Stadio Olimpico.

"We'll sign a striker to replace Mattia Destro," Garcia said.

"Clubs should only sign useful players that are going to add something to the group.

"There's a lot of talk about transfers at the moment, but the players know they need to focus on Empoli."

Roma, who are second, have slipped seven points adrift of leaders Juventus after a run of four draws in five league matches.

Garcia haswarned of the dangers posed by an Empoli side that Roma have beaten in Serie A and the Coppa Italia this season.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is not looking to sign a replacement for Samuel Eto'o during the January transfer window.

The veteran striker's move to Sampdoria was confirmed on Tuesday and Martinez sees Arouna Kone, who is fit again after a long-term knee injury, as the player to step into the breach.

Everton are enduring a difficult season and have failed to win any of their last eight games, but Martinez is in no hurry to bring in reinforcements.

CHAUTAUQUA - Support for renovation, rather than replacement, of the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater gained further momentum this week.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced Tuesday its designation of the building as a national treasure during a press conference held in Buffalo, throwing its weight behind finding alternative means of making improvements to the 122-year-old structure, contrary to the institution's previously proposed project that would have constituted the demolition and construction of a new amphitheater on the site.

"The plan to demolish the (amphitheater) would tear at the heart of Chautauqua and compromise the historic character that many Chautauquans and visitors from around the country deeply value," said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust, according to the Associated Press.

Pictured from left to right are Jay DiLorenzo, president of the Preservation League of New York State; Stephanie K. Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; Peter Flynn, co-chairman of the Preservation Buffalo Niagara board; and Brian Berg, chair of The Committee to Preserve the Historic Amphitheater. Meeks is pictured above speaking to members of the audience about the national treasure designation for the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater. Pictured, at left, Flynn talks with attendees of the event about Chautauqua Institution.

The designation does not carry legal weight, but it falls in line with Chautauqua residents' concerns that the amphitheater is historically significant to the culture of the institution. During Tuesday's press conference, Meeks asked the leadership of Chautauqua Institution to work with preservationists in order to conserve an iconic building in which notable speakers and entertainers perform each summer.

The announcement comes one week after Chautauqua Institution President Thomas Becker announced his recommendation to the board of trustees that the decision on whether to proceed with its $33 million project to replace the structure with an updated model be tabled until the board's August meeting. Last year, leaders of the institution had proposed replacing the amphitheater to increase capacity, handicap accessibility and safety; but these plans were opposed by a coalition that includes preservationists, architects and Chautauqua property owners.

As a result of the strong criticism drawn by the project proposal, Becker said in a statement to institution members that a productive discourse between the institution and its community would be the best way to go about determining what course of action should be taken in the future.

"Following a detailed review of the project to date, it is clear from the public and private communications going back and forth between the institution and various members of the Chautauqua community that meaningful re-engagement of our various constituencies - especially those who are so passionate in their views, both positive or critical, about the (amphitheater) and its future - should occur; especially during the summer season and before we move forward," Becker said.

"It is clear to me that there has been a lot of communicating at each other, but not enough discussion with each other ... and (the amphitheater restoration project) is too important to (the institution's) mission not to get it right," he added.

Transfer Insider: Chelsea deals close, Man United plot defender bid and Liverpool eye up striker raid - January 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

There is now just a week to go before the clsoe of the January transfer window. Here, our man with his ear to the ground, Jamie Sanderson, takes a look at the latest rumours...

Andre Schurrle - Chelsea to Wolfsburg Schurrle has told Chelsea he wants to go this month, and while Jose Mourinho doesn't want to sell, Wolfsburg are offering mega money. Talks are progressing well and both the Blues and the player expect this to go through shortly, with Schurrle on standby to fly to Germany for a medical. (Chances of it happening: 9/10)

Juan Cuadrado - Fiorentina to Chelsea With Schurrle departing, Chelsea are going for Colombian star Cuadrado as his replacement. A 20million offer is on the table, and while the player wants to go, Fiorentina are holding out for his 26.8million release clause. This deal is dragging on, but we'd be surprised if it didn't happen before deadline day. Keep an eye on this one. (8/10)

Aleksandar Dragovic - Dinamo Kiev to Manchester United United desperately need a centre-back before the window closes, and having struggled to tempt Mats Hummels or Marquinhos, Dragovic is seenas being next best. Talks have been held over a 14.9million deal, and scouts will now watch him play a friendly this week before deciding whether to make an official bid and push this deal through. (6/10)

Alexandre Lacazette - Lyon to Liverpool Liverpool scouts are now at every Lyon game to watch 23-year-old Lacazette. He's scored 21 goals in 22 games this term and Brendan Rodgers is keen. Rumours say a 25million deal could happen, but Lyon expect him to stay this month, and unless the Reds shock us by making a late raid, don't expect this one to happen. (2/10)

Memphis Depay - PSV to Tottenham Tottenham love Depay and have decided to make an approach this month. PSV would prefer to sell in the summer, when Manchester United should come in and perhaps offer more, but Spurs are putting together a tempting package. Hard to say if this will happen or not, but this is likely to be a deadline day deal if it goes through. Well, you know Daniel Levy...(5/10)

Sergio Busquets - Barcelona to Arsenal Busquets is currently negotiating a new contract at Barcelona, and with talks dragging on, he's being linked with other clubs. Don't buy the hype though, the name dropping is just being used to get the midfield star a better deal. He's not considering leaving and all parties expect he'll commit to Barca soon. This one is a non-starter. (1/10)

Leaders questioning replacement Bedford guards - January 25, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEDFORD - As Bedford County officials seek a new administration at the county jail - which has sported three different executives in two months - guards and the former warden have expressed serious concerns about several men hired as temporary and permanent officers.

Nearly four months after an inmate escaped, prompting Warden David Kessling's resignation and an ensuing political scandal, a slate of newly hired and promoted officers has taken charge at the jail in a shift officials have called "a new day."

In a recent meeting with the county commissioners, however, guards' union representatives noted that two of the officers had been disciplined for security breaches under Kessling's administration, with at least one resigning as a result. Another was demoted after superiors said he couldn't handle his responsibilities, Kessling confirmed. While Sheriff Charwin Reichelderfer dismissed the guards' complaints as "dwelling on the past," their concerns - verified by jail documents and confirmed by Kessling - show that the county hasn't yet fully recovered from the September escape and its aftermath.

    Breaches and demotion

Since inmate Jeremiah Moser allegedly scaled a jail basketball hoop and fled into the woods Sept. 30, relations between county officials and rank-and-file guards have hit a few bumps.

A guard was suspended for the security breach that allowed Moser to climb the wall, and others have publicly blamed 2012 staff cuts that left fewer guards at the facility than in prior years.

Moser was captured a day after the escape, but the political issues he opened remain today.

At a meeting Jan. 15, union officers discussed staffing concerns with the commissioners, said Barry Pearce, a staff representative for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 83, which includes the Bedford guards.

But they also mentioned another, as-yet unpublicized concern: that the recent hires could pose new problems at the jail, especially after some were implicated in security breaches as recently as last year.

"Basically, there were security violations. In the past, those same violations led to termination," Pearce said. "And now they bring these guys back. Is that a lesson learned?"

Five Blair, nine Bedford bridges to be replaced - January 25, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

It will be at least 16 months until PennDOT's Rapid Bridge Replacement project has an effect on local bridges - five in Blair County - under a timeline and

bridge list released by PennDOT officials.

PennDOT officials announced late last year that Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners was awarded an $899 million contract to replace 558 Pennsylvania bridges, including 48 in District 9 - Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset counties.

Through a Rapid Bridge Replacement project, Plenary Walsh and 11 Pennsylvania-based subcontractors - including Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., a State College company - are scheduled to complete all 558 bridge replacements by 2017.

PennDOT spokeswoman Erin Waters-Trasatt said construction at 58 bridge sites in southwestern and northeastern Pennsylvania is slated to begin this summer.

She said these bridges were selected first because they have low traffic volumes and are similar in design.

"The team has come up with a schedule that they thought would be most efficient," Waters-Trasatt said, adding that bridges can range in size from eight to more than 360 feet.

Waters-Trasatt said similar bridges in location and size were grouped to increase productivity.

Some bridge parts likely will be created offsite to speed up the process, she said.

Ralph DeStefano, District 9 bridge engineer, said all 48 district bridges were classified as structurally deficient - meaning they ranked poorly during bridge inspections and are in need of improvement.
