A 58-year-old window washer who fell 11 stories from a building onto a moving car is "fighting for his life" and opens his eyes when relatives speak to him, his family said Tuesday.
The man's name and hometown have not been released.
"We are amazed that he fell from such a high distance and still survived. Landing on the car really helped, and we are so thankful for that," the man's family said in a statement released by San Francisco General Hospital. They family asked not to be identified.
Police said the man was moving equipment on the roof of a bank building in San Francisco's financial district and not on a window-washing platform when he fell at 10 a.m. Friday crashing against the roof and back window of a sedan.
"He is a stubborn, strong man, and he is fighting for his life. He has had several surgeries and is still in critical condition, but doing a little better," the statement said. "We would also like to thank San Francisco General Hospital and all the doctors that never left his side. They have exceeded anything we could have hoped for him."
Many came forward to help the man when he fell, including a nurse who was walking by in the area. No one else was injured, including the driver of the car the man fell on.
The family thanked the nurse and firefighters who helped him and said the man, who has a wife and three daughters, is doing better than doctors expected, according to the statement.
Dr. Paul Doherty, a physics professor and senior scientist at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, said it took about three seconds for the man, falling at an estimated speed of 60 mph, to hit the car, which acted as a big shock absorber and saved his life.
"He crushed the roof in a part where there were no reinforcement pillars and that allowed the roof to collapse more than a foot, maybe even two feet, under him and spread out the impact," Doherty said.
"The fact that he hit that car at the right time it's just amazing," he added. "He is a really lucky guy."

A window washer is doing a little better but still fighting for his life after falling 11 stories from a San Francisco building then bouncing off a moving car, his family said in a statement Tuesday.
The man, whose name has not been released by the family or San Francisco General Hospital officials, suffered life-threatening injuries in the Friday morning falland has been fighting for his life ever since, according to a statement published by the Associated Press.
"We are amazed that he fell from such a high distance and still survived. Landing on the car really helped, and we are so thankful for that," the statement said.

We would also like to thank San Francisco General Hospital and all the doctors that never left his side. They have exceeded anything we could have hoped for him."
The accident occurred about 10 a.m. in the city's Financial District. The back of the car where the man landed was smashed in, but the driver was not injured, police said.
The driver, Mohammad Alcozai, told KGO-TV that he was happy to be alive and praying that the worker survived.
He said the impact came shortly after he made a left turn, adding that his car's roof almost completely collapsed in the accident.
Maa-Becca Tucker was walking past the crash when she saw the worker lying on the ground. She said he wasn't moving.
Tucker described the scene as crazy and said a woman standing next to her was praying for the man as firefighters took him away in an ambulance.
Some witnesses said the man had been clinging to a rope, which could be seen dangling from the roof of the building.

"This is a hard time for our family, and we ask for privacy. We appreciate everyone's concern and hope to give another update when he is doing better," the statement said.
The man, who has a wife and three daughters, remains in critical condition but is doing better than doctors expected, according to the statement.
Many came forward to help the man when he fell. But it was not clear Friday if people are coming forward with cash donations or if a bank account has been set up to help his family. Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said she was not aware of such an account.

SAN FRANCISCO --
The unbelievable accident closed off parts of California and Montgomery streets in San Francisco's Financial District Friday morning. A window washer fell approximately 60 feet from an 11th story building, landing on a moving car below. The victim survived but is in critical condition. It's hard to believe the driver of that car was not hurt.
The window washer fell from the roof and landed on a Toyota Camry. All but the driver's area was caved in. The driver, Mohammad Al Cozai, narrowly escaped being critically injured.
"As soon as I made my left turn, then I saw something hit my car very hard. The impact was really hard. I didn't know what it is," said Mohammad Al Cozai of Dublin.
After landing on the car, the window washer fell onto the street. Witnesses ran to help.
Witness describes San Francisco window washer's fall
Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Julia Bernstein said the man suffered a broken arm and injuries to his side.
"I took off my jacket, I put it over him and I just started to direct traffic. I don't know anything about medical, so I did what I could," said witness Jess Cathcart.
The thud of the body onto the car and the shattering of the glass was what was, I guess shocking," said witness Sam Hartwell.
The man is an employee of Redwood City-based Century Window Cleaning. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the company for safety violations four times in 2008, including one serious violation that resulted in a $6,740 penalty, according to the agency's website. The case was eventually settled, and the penalty was reduced to $2,720, Bernstein said.
