Central Florida company says it has the solution - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ORLANDO, Fla. -

Is your car smelling musty? It may be making you sick. A spilled drink here, a leaky window there, even a faulty A/C unit hidden deep in your dashboard can all be sources of mold and mildew. Xtraordinair By Class, a Central Florida company, says it has a process that can leave your car smelling fresh and allergen-free, all in less than one hour.

The company's director, Don Ward, says their "Green Nano Technology" fogger will kill all odor causing bacteria.

"There is definitely a sick car syndrome," said Ward, as he showed off what he calls his company's "revolutionary cleaning product."

Ward said people are getting sick from the bacteria in their cars and they may not even realize it.

Angie Federici says nothing about her vehicle is clean and fresh.

"My children and I we live in the car, we do," she said. "It usually smells like somebody's sweaty sneakers."

Between school, work and trips to her kids sporting events, her mini van is a home away from home. She thinks it may also be home to mold, mildew and to use her words, "Who knows what else."

"We probably are inhaling all kinds of toxins from the car from the all the things we do in this car," she added.

"This is an issue we're finding more and more. People are getting in their car and having headaches," Ward said. "They buy a used car and there's something growing in it. Suddenly a half hour home they have a headache and they can't figure out why. It's what's in their car."

Bayern Munich Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of January 12 - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Matthias Schrader/Associated Press

Bayern Munich have wasted little time in this seasons January transfer window with midfielders Xherdan Shaqiri and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg being sent on loan to Inter Milan and Augsburg respectively.

The moves can be considered little more than some early spring cleaning, as Pep Guardiola looks to tidy up his squad and solve any potential uprest among personnel before the season reaches its conclusion.

Whether or not the Spanish coach will now look to bring in some new faces to replace those that have left is up for debate. Anything could be just around the cornerin the mayhem of the transfer window.

    Last updated: Monday, January 12

    Claude Paris/Associated Press

The latest superstar to be linked with a move to Bayern in this January transfer window is none other than Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane.

According to reports in Spanish paper Marca, reported and translated by the DailyExpress on January 10, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola spoke to agent Jorge Mendes to decipher whether a deal could be struck.

The British press have since run with the story, with theMetrowho linked to the original rumour in theExpressalso stating onJanuary 10that the Bavarian club's interest in the defender could scupper any hopes of both Chelsea and Manchester Untied signing the player

Although Madrid are unlikely to sell the central defender, such reports state that the Bayern coach is desperate to bolster his defense and has looked to the Frenchman as the ideal solution.

Great Lakes teeming with tiny plastic fibers - January 10, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TRAVERSE CITY - Scientists who have reported that the Great Lakes are awash in tiny bits of plastic are raising new alarms about a little-noticed form of the debris turning up in sampling nets: synthetic fibers from garments, cleaning cloths and other consumer products.

They are known as "microfibers" - exceedingly fine filaments made of petroleum-based materials such as polyester and nylon that are woven together into fabrics.

"When we launder our clothes, some of the little microfibers will break off and go down the drain to the wastewater treatment facility and end up in our bodies of water," Sherri "Sam" Mason, a chemist with the State University of New York at Fredonia, said Friday.

According to new report by scientists, the Great Lakes are awash in tiny bits of plastic. Know as microfibers these fibers are found in garments, cleaning cloths and other consumer products. (Journal file photo)

The fibers are so minuscule that people typically don't realize their favorite pullover fleece can shed thousands of them with every washing, as the journal Environmental Science & Technology reported in 2011.

Over the past couple of years, Mason and colleagues have documented the existence of microplastic litter - some too small to see with the naked eye - in the Great Lakes. Among the particles are abrasive beads used in personal care products such as facial and body washes and toothpastes. Other researchers have made similar finds in the oceans.

A number of companies are replacing microbeads with natural substances such as ground-up fruit pits. Illinois imposed a statewide ban on microbeads last year. Similar measures were proposed in California and New York.

But microfibers have gotten comparatively little attention. They've accounted for about 4 percent of the plastic litter that Mason and her students have collected from the Great Lakes. The group drags finely meshed netting along the lake surfaces, harvesting tens of thousands of particles per square mile, and study them with microscopes.

About three-quarters of the bits they've found are fragments of larger items such as bottles. Smaller portions consist of microbeads, Styrofoam and other materials.

But when Mason's team and a group from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant program took samples from southern Lake Michigan in 2013, about 12 percent of the debris consisted of microfibers. It's unclear why the fibers were three times as prevalent in that area as elsewhere in the lakes, although currents and wave actions may be one explanation, said Laura Kammin, pollution prevention specialist with Sea Grant.
