No receipt: John Durning has never been asked for a receipt from Ed Balls despite cleaning the windows at his Castlefordhome once a month

Ed Balls was accused of total hypocrisy last night after his window cleaner revealed he has never asked for a receipt in 17 years.

The Shadow Chancellor provoked controversy at the weekend when he lectured families on their duty to collect receipts and personal details from gardeners, cleaners and handymen, no matter how small the job done.

Mr Balls said he always followed the practice and had done since I have been involved in politics.

Children at the Canberra Hospital's women and children's ward were surprised to see a number of superheroes with sponges hanging outside their windows on Wednesday morning.

Abseilers from a local window cleaning business shed their overalls for Spiderman, Batman, Buzz Lightyear and Ninja Turtle costumes to bring laughter and smiles to those fighting illness and injury.

James Howe, general manager of Canberra based Rope Access Engineering, said this was the first time his staff had dressed in costume while cleaning the windows of some of the city's tallest buildings.

"We just wanted to cheer the kids up as many of them are having a tough time in hospital," he said.

"The idea was just to put a smile on their faces, even if it was just for a day or a short moment."

Mr Howe said he became emotional when receiving feedback from some of the families of children being treated at the hospital.

Ed Balls and a string of Labour frontbenchers claimed expenses for cleaning and other odd jobs without submitting receipts, it has emerged.

Mr Balls claimed 1,610 for cleaners and his wife Yvette Cooper claimed 2,640 for housework and gardening, out of a total of 37,881 claimed by 12 Labour MPs.

But the shadow chancellor did not submit a single receipt for the work done despite telling families they had a duty to record the personal details of gardeners, cleaners and handymen, no matter how small the job done.
