Plympton-Wyoming Mayor Lonny Napper

This past years Plympton-Wyoming Mayors Community Appreciation Awards will honour organizations, volunteers, historians, an author, baseball players, fundraisers and businesses for their contributions to the Lambton County municipality.

I think it was 2010 or 2011 that we started it, Mayor Lonny Napper said about the annual list. Its something my wife and I wanted to do to give back.

Following the tradition he began, Napper will be host to a noon luncheon on Feb. 1 at the Camlachie Community Centre to recognize the new honorees.

He covers the cost of the lunch and those attending are asked to make a donation to a cause selected each year. This year, Napper is recommending a $10 per person donation for Miracle Maxs Minions, a project of one of this years honorees, Brian Schoonjans and his family.

They planted a field of sunflowers in 2019 at their farm on Douglas Line and invited visitors in to take photos and leave a donation in memory of Max Rombouts, a two-year-old boy from Thedford who died that year after battling leukemia.

Its estimated 10,000 people or more visited the field while the sunflowers were blooming in September, and donations came close to $60,000 for charities selected by the Rombouts family.

I just like to honour the people who make a difference in the community, Napper said. Thats why its such a nice place to live because of what they do.

Tickets to this years awards luncheon are available, in advance only, until Jan. 28 by calling the municipal office at 519-845-3939. Charitable receipts will be available for donations of $50 or more.

A dealer supplied golf ball-sized amounts of cocaine to pay off a debt.

Dexter Atkinson pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to supply, and supplying a quantity of cocaine to another between January 1, 2019, and August 29, 2019. when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court.

The 23-year-old, of Gibbons Avenue, Stapleford,

Charges were brought when police searched the 23-year-old's address, in Gibbons Avenue, Stapleford, and found varying amounts of cocaine, including five golf ball-sized amounts worth between 3,000 and 5,000.

Two sets of scales had the presence of cocaine, there were dealer's lists, deal bags and 1,700 in a bedroom.

Jeremy Janes, mitigating, said Atkinson, who had no previous convictions, "comes from a loving, supportive family" and "has a real talent for football".

He said Atkinson had worked as part of a project to steer others away from the path he was to "ultimately take".

In 2018, Atkinson had been charged with unlawful wounding - a serious allegation that he stabbed another person in Stapleford, added Mr Janes.

He was electronically tagged for more than a year when, one month before the trial, the prosecution reviewed the evidence and concluded it was insufficient against him.

No evidence was offered against Atkinson last autumn.

"Because of the tag, he was unable to do the work he had done before," said Mr Janes.

"He fitted and sold tyres and did window cleaning but it was difficult".

He turned to temptation and, in one sense, easy money, said Mr Janes, and was supplying cocaine in the golf ball size to try and pay off a debt for a different sort of drug.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC told Atkinson: "You have lost your good character in a spectacular way".

He was jailed for two years and ten months.

Organized people tend to be clean people, and Amber Kostelny, a professional organizer in Chicago, knows why: The more organized someone is, the easier it is to clean. The less clutter is out, the easier it is to clean and sanitize surfaces. One of her favorite tough cleaners is Lysol Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner ($1.99 for 24 ounces, target.com). She finds it works especially well on hard-water stains.

As owners of Handmaiden Cleaning in Walla Walla, and founders of the American House Cleaners Association, Grace and Kevin Reynolds are picky about the products they recommend for their own cleaners and others in the industry. A favorite is Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser Powder ($1.93 for 21 ounces, walmart.com). Its excellent at cleaning stainless steel, removing hard-water buildup and stains on glass and tile, Grace says. For more house-cleaning products, Browne recommends taking a look at the Environmental Working Groups top-rated products list (ewg.org).

One of the most versatile cleaners we have ever tested at Good Housekeeping is Simple Green, Forte says ($4.97 for 32 ounces, homedepot.com). It can be diluted for lots of different household uses and it works very well on a wide variety of stains and soils. Although dilution and instructions vary for different surfaces, Forte says the payoff is fewer bottles in the cleaning closet.

Clients with allergies ask Maxine Mills of MaxAll Cleaning Services in Florida to use products sensitive to their needs. Thanksgiving is the holiday where people gather with their friends and families to enjoy a big turkey dinner and reflect on who or what they are thankful for in their lives.The national tradition has been going on since the first celebration in 1621 and has helped gather people from different backgrounds to have a day to be thankful for everything in their lives.

In Cortland, many people are celebrating Thanksgiving in their own special ways as well as thinking about what they are thankful for most. Six people around the city tell us their plans for the holiday and what they are most thankful for.

Raquel Berman is a student at SUNY Cortland studying as a History Adolescent Education major with a minor in Womens Sexuality Studies. For Thanksgiving break, she plans on going home to see her family in Long Island and eat lots of food while being there with them and her pets. Berman is thankful for having a place to sleep every night, having friends who care for her, and her supportive family.

Dustin Driesbaugh is a Window Cleaner for American Window Cleaning in Port Crane, NY and a new home owner as of August 2019. Driesbaugh is excited for Thanksgiving this year as he will get to have dinner in his new house with his wife and three kids. Dustin is thankful for not only the new house, but for his family and animals, having a steady job, and just life in general.

Samantha Grzybek is a French Adolescent Education and ESL major at SUNY Cortland. This Thanksgiving, Grzybek is going with her family to the Poconos and then spend the rest of the holiday at home with her cat. She is thankful for her family, friends, and being able to go to college to study something she enjoys.

Retired couple Betty and Bob Thomas plan on taking it easy during the holiday as they plan on staying at home. The Thomass are thankful for their health as well as their family and friends.

The last person on this list is Scott Thorton, a Bus Driver for SUNY Cortland. For Thanksgiving, Scott plans on having a small get together with his family to celebrate. He would like to thank his family and friends for being there for him.

A window cleaner has been praised on social media for voluntarily cleaning Anglesey's road signs and bus stops.

Steve Matthews, who lives in Holyhead and owns Clear View Contract Window Cleaning Ltd, has been keeping windows and carpets clean on the island since 1993.

But for the last couple of years, the window cleaner has decided to venture out with a different approach to cleaning.

He said: "It first started when I saw a 'Happy Birthday' sign hung near the Llanfachraeth road sign nearly two years ago. It was such a lovely message, but the road sign behind it was so dirty and I thought it was a shame.

"So I stopped the van, got my window cleaning kit out and decided to clean the road sign myself. A video of me doing it was posted on social media and the feedback on our page was absolutely brilliant."

From then onwards, Steve decided to make it his mission to clean all road signs that he could find that needed attention. From Holyhead, to Trearddur Bay and Bodedern, Steve has cleaned all sorts of road signs and has recently started cleaning bus stop windows.

"I enjoy doing it," he explained. "And I really love seeing people take interest in what we do.

"It's such a simple thing to do and doesn't take much of our time. Our customers have even got in contact with the business and requested us to clean a road sign near them, which has been incredible to see."

Steve hopes to continue with his voluntary work for a number of reasons.

He said: "I think it just shows the power of social media.

"Not only has it been good for my business, but more importantly, it has brought different communities on Anglesey together.

"It's all about giving something back, however small that may be."
