Custom Thermal Applications Contracted by Leading Meat Processor to Upgrade Plant Sanitation … - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Brampton, Ontario - Custom Thermal Applications Inc., a global provider of industrial High Volume Process Water Heating solutions, was contracted to implement an upgrade of the high volume water heating system at a leading meat processing company that improved water temperature control and process demands mandated by increased volumes of sanitation hot water.

The upgrade incorporated Custom Thermal Applications' QuikWater Direct Contact Water Heater thereby: Increasing sanitation hot water capacity Reducing sanitation times Increasing sanitation effectiveness while substantially reducing the energy requirements needed to heat the water

Custom Thermal Applications designed the new system application for the client's 24/7 business operation by integrating with the old, so that - in the event of emergencies there could be a quick switch-over to a back-up system (even though it is dated and is no longer performing to the customer's high standards).

The project required Custom Thermal Applications to design, install and test new systems and modifications for gas, air, water, pumps and control panels.

The new QuikWater provides: Greater water heating capacity an output of 272 USGPM heating the water from 2C(35F) to 63C(145F) Dramatically increased fuel efficiency from about 65% to 70% for the old steam/heat exchanger system to 99% for the QuikWater. This qualified the client for a rebate from the gas company. Steady output water temperature even during fluctuating or peak plant demands for hot water.

QuikWater Direct Contact Water Heaters operating on gas or propane have no tubes separating the water from the combustion gases. The water passes directly through the combustion gases and this "Direct Contact" results in rapid transfer of heat from the combustion gases to the water.

The water is heated from as low at 0C (32F) to as high as 93C (200F) in a single pass. Water quality is actually improved (potable in means potable out) and the resultant thermal efficiency is 99% (for the standard units heating to 82C (180F) or 98% for the QuikWater MegahHeater which heats to 93C (200F).

Emissions are correspondingly low and the exhaust leaves the heater at only 6C (10F) above the inlet water temperature.

About Custom Thermal Applications Since 1987 Custom Thermal Applications has been providing industrial customers with solutions to their Combustion industry challenges by designing and building Combustion Systems to meet the unique requirements of Paint Finishing Systems, Metal Heat Treating, Aluminum Processing, Bakery Ovens and Printing Presses. Systems have been used in producing automotive parts, aluminum extrusions, consumer ready food products, paper products and metal refining.

Custom Thermal Applications are manufacturers' representatives for QuikWater direct contact water heaters and Pollution Control Products. QuikWater is a world leader in reducing greenhouse gases through energy efficient water heating equipment. Pollution Control Products' specialty burn-off ovens provide cleaning of paint racks and electric motors through a closely controlled pyrolysis process, reducing the environmental impact of paint and varnish removal.

Health department workers to get back two-thirds of sick leave; building floods after water heater leaks - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By GORDON D. FIEDLER JR. Salina Journal | Wednesday, January 22, 2014 2:00 AM

Saline County Health Department employees received good news and bad news Tuesday morning.

The good news was a favorable decision by county commissioners on workers' sick-leave policy. The bad news, at least for those housed in the former Rema Bakeware facility on East North Street, was showing up for work after a three-day weekend and finding several inches of water on the floor from a burst water heater.

    Back to the good news.

    Sick leave bank

In action that Commissioner John Price termed "crazy generous," county health department workers who had at least five years of service with the former city-county department at the end of 2013 and who were paid for a third of their accrued sick leave now will have the other two-thirds placed in a "time bank" for use after exhausting sick leave accrued beginning Jan. 1, when their services were absorbed into Saline County.

The sick-leave issue had been hanging for some months, and commissioners wanted staff to hash out tax, legal and bargaining issues that might be associated with sick-leave adjustments.

During their study session before their official 11 a.m. meeting, commissioners heard from Human Resources Director Marilyn Leamer.

"The hours would be put into a sick-leave credit," Leamer said. "Those hours would be made available to that employee."

She used a hypothetical example of an employee with 1,500 hours of accrued sick leave who was paid for a third of those hours, in accordance with Salina-Saline County Health Department policy, leaving 1,000 hours.

Local company keeping residents in hot water - January 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MADISON, Wis. -

With more bitterly cold weather heading toward southern Wisconsin, having reliable heat is of utmost importance.

But hundreds of low-income families are getting by without hot water.

Now one local company is working to make lives easier, one water heater at a time.

"There's no government program for it," said Jason Hafeman of Project Home. "There's no help out there for those people."

Hafeman is hoping to alleviate the hot water needs of many in the area by installing new water heaters at a discounted rate.

"I looked at my last job I was working at, and I just said, and I was looking for a change, and I just wanted to do something where I'm helping people," said Hafeman.

"It's taken for granted," continued Hafeman. "I mean everybody, you turn on your shower, you turn on your sink, there's hot water. Everybody just assumes that's how it is for every home owner. But that's not the case."

And the price of not having a water heater can be dangerous.

"The alternative is people boiling water on the stove, putting it in the bath tub to try and heat the water, and for low income people, especially elderly or people with a handicap or disabilities, that can be a big health and safety risk," said Hafeman.

So, in both case either gas or electrical the proper installation and maintenance is compulsory. In case you are going to install a gas water heater you should ensure that there is no any leakage of gas while installing the new gas water heating unit. And also avoid the leakage of water from the tank and also from the water supply pipes. If you are going to use an electrical water heating unit than you should keep in mind that the water is not leaking from any part of the water container inside the unit and also prevent it from the electrical short circuits as it could be highly dangerous for you and your family.

The initial step of setting up a new hot water heating unit is to eliminate the current one. Before detaching the old water heater, shut off the water, gas or electricity supply. In case compulsory, use a tool like wrench to unplug the outlet and inlet fittings to eliminate hot water from inside. For the water heating units that use gas, you must have to eliminate the release water pipes that are attached to the set up bonnet. HOWTO: Install a Tankless Hot Water Heater - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOWTO: Install a Tankless Hot Water Heater Unlimited Hot Water

When I bought my latest house I was already planning on some upgrades to various things. One of these was the hot water heater. The water heater that came with the house was old and would start to run rust-colored water if the faucet was left on long enough. I'd been hearing about the new "tankless" style heaters so I went gathering information about them. Turns out they did what I wanted, using much less energy in their off state since they only heat water as it flows, there are no large reservoir tanks to worry about keeping warmed.

I installed my heater after finding rust and silt in the bath tub when trying to take a bath. I performed a second installation with a friend after she saw how nice the tankless heater worked, and her hot water heater just plain stopped. This article is the result of the lessons learned during both of those installations.

When I went looking for information on installing a tankless hot water heater most places told me simply to find a "qualified professional" and have them do it. Well, I'm a do-it-yourselfer so that wouldn't cut it. I found very little information on installing a tankless heater, thus this guide was born. The following items are the things I wish someone had told me ahead of time.

I am very pleased with my home upgrade to a tankless hot water heater. As you can see in the photos below the space savings were enormous. My utility bill (for natural gas) has dropped by almost a third. I can shower for as long as I want without ever worrying about running out of hot water (or getting rust and sediments out of it.) Another advantage is that the service life on this tankless hot water heater is 20 years. Most of the new hot water heaters I looked at charge a big premium to have a service life of even 12 years, so I will be enjoying my trouble-free hot water for even longer. The installation was challenging, mostly due to my lack of advance knowledge and planning, but it certainly is within the reach of a competent DIY'er. After reading this you have any questions or comments, go ahead and contact me and I will do my best to answer them.

Unpermitted construction on the rise - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Did you know you need a permit from the city to install a new water heater?

What about to replace an air conditioner?

Some Santa Clarita residents may not know that some common household fix-ups and improvements require a city permit before work can begin, meaning they may be unknowingly violating building codes.

Smaller scale City officials have recently noticed an upward trend in such violations.

Although we dont have much in the way of specific facts and figures we know that it is on the increase, especially for the smaller residential projects, said Bill Read, an assistant building official with the city of Santa Clarita.

For example, the city recently checked the number of water heaters that had been disposed locally versus the number of permits people had pulled to install a new water heater.

Considerably less than half of the ones picked up were from people who had actually pulled permits for a new heater, he said.

Read said much of the unpermitted construction is for some smaller-scale residential projects, such as replacing a broken-down air conditioner or furnace.

Though those projects may seem minor, Read said such work could present a safety concern.

The primary focus of most of the building codes that we enforce is safety, Read said.
