Cold weather tips for people, pets -
February 21, 2015 by

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) -- DeKalb County Animal Services officials say pet owners need to take extra precautions to keep companions safe while cold weather moves through the region - and Hall County Fire Services is out with some safety tips for the pet owners, themselves.
Animal Services Director Xan Rawls says cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. Rawls says despite cats and dogs having fur, they're not resistant to cold weather and can suffer frostbite and hypothermia, too.
Rawls says drivers should also check beneath their cars and tap on their hoods to make sure cats aren't taking shelter on warm surfaces before starting the engine.
Rawls says pet owners should also check paws for cracks or bleeding and wipe dogs' paws and bellies down after walks because they could pick up traces of anti-freeze or de-icer which could be harmful to them.
PEOPLE TIPS
Hall County Fire Services Fire prevention officials encourage residents to take extra precautions during this cold weather and in the aftermath of the ice storm which many people are still without power and their normal heating source.
Many times, people just dont understand the risk involved in using alternative heating methods. Citizens are just trying to keep warm the best way they can, with whatever they have, says Battalion Chief Scott Cagle, Hall County Fire Marshal.
An additional problem during the next few days might be carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. CO gas can come from several sources: gas-fired appliances, charcoal grills, wood-burning furnaces or fireplaces, and motor vehicles. CO poisoning symptoms are similar to flu symptoms. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue. CO poisoning is deadly! Another source of CO, specifically during power outages, is the improper use of generators:
Generators should be operated in well ventilated locations outdoors away from all doors, windows and vent openings.
Never use a generator in an attached garage, even with the door open. Place generators so that exhaust fumes cant enter the home through windows, doors or other openings in the building.

A Macedon family was not injured in an early morning fire. Firefighters were called to a home on West Street between Bickford and West Main Street.
Crews say a family of three was heating the home with a pellet stove when it malfunctioned. Firefighters say heavy smoke damaged the roof and attic. We're told someone inside woke up due to the smoke and was able to get everyone inside out.
Investigators say they are checking for hot spots throughout the home. Crews say this should be a warning for families using heaters or pellet stoves to heat their homes this winter.

ROXBURY TWP. Fire Official Michael Pellek is warning residents to use extreme caution with portable heating devices, especially as the weather strikes zero digits.
Rockaway Borough just had a structure fire last week that was caused by a space heater, Pellek said Wednesday.
In that incident, a malfunctioning space heater is believed to have accidentally sparked a blaze in a Marshall Avenue home early on the morning of Friday, Jan. 30.
According to Rockaway Borough Police, a couple, their 17-year-old and 10-year-old daughters and a dog were sleeping in the home at about 4:42 a.m. when the 17-year-old awoke to the smell of smoke in her room.
The teenager called 911 and the family was able to escape before police arrived on the scene. No one was injured, police said.
The home sustained fire and water damage.
Pellek said that with the popularity of small, personal heating devices, fires like this are becoming more common in the winter months.
Fifty percent of all structure fires reported during the months of December, January and February are caused by heater fires, Pellek said.
And Roxbury Township has not been immune.
Last January 2014, a resident was seriously injured in a fire on Circle Drive that was caused by a space heater, Pellek said.

New well for woman in need -
February 9, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
John Alvarez, left, Sharon Lawson and well driller Jeff Sheppard, talk about the well Sheppard finished drilling on Tuesday February 3, 2015 in Ocala, Florida.
Just a week ago, Sharon Lawson, 71, was overwhelmed. Her well had all but collapsed, sending muddy water through her pipes.
As she cares for her developmentally disabled sister, who is age 67 with the mental age of a kindergartner, Lawson had no financial means to pay the $5,000 expense to replace the 40-year-old well.
When news hit last week about her dilemma, more than a dozen people began calling her home and offering to help pay for a new well. Even the city of Ocala reached out to Lawson, who lives about a mile from Wild Waters in Silver Springs.
On Tuesday, Lawson was all smiles, watching Jeff Sheppard Well Drilling install a new well on her property.
I can't believe how many people have offered their help, Lawson said. I want to publicly thank everyone who called and sent money.
Two men in particular, Don Dery of Ocklawaha and John Alvarez of Ocala, agreed to split the cost of the $4,000 well and $1,000 worth of new pipe to connect to the house and the electric lines needed to connect the pump.
I read the story and I just wanted to help her, Dery said. Those were terrible living conditions. It is nice to help people when I have the chance.
Alvarez, a relative of former Ocala Police Chief Kenneth Alvarez, said he didn't do it for the publicity, but believes in helping people when he can.
I'm grateful that I was able to help, Alvarez said. And she really needed it.

Dear Savvy Senior,
What tips do you recommend for making a bathroom safer and more functional for seniors. My 79-year-old mother slipped and fell getting out of the shower last month, and Id like to modify her bathroom a bit with some safety features that can help protect her.
Searching Daughter
Dear Searching,
Because more accidents and injuries happen in the bathroom than any other room in the house, this is a very important room to modify for aging in place. Depending on your moms needs, here are some tips for each part of the bathroom that can make it safer and easier to use.
Flooring
To avoid slipping, a simple fix is to get non-skid bath rugs for the floors. Or if you want to put in a new floor get slip-resistant tiles, rubber or vinyl flooring, or install wall-to-wall carpeting.
Lighting
Good lighting is also very important, so install the highest wattage bulbs allowed for your moms bathroom fixtures, and get a plug-in nightlight that automatically turns on when the room gets dark.
Bathtub/shower
