Speedway bill moves forward - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man uses the crosswalk at International Speedway Boulevard and Daytona Boulevard near the Speedway on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013. The Florida Department of Transportation is budgeting for improvements including two new walkways over the 8-lane boulevard.

A key Senate committee waved the green flag Wednesday for a bill that would provide $60 million in tax breaks in exchange for an ongoing overhaul of the iconic Daytona International Speedway.

The bill filed by Port Orange Republican state Sen. Dorothy Hukill would provide the Speedway with $2 million per year in sales tax rebates as the track undergoes the most extensive renovation in its 55-year history. A companion House bill co-introduced by Reps. David Santiago, R-Deltona, and Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford, is making its way through committee.

On Wednesday, the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee passed Hukills bill on a unanimous vote.

This is a real economic driver not, only for the county that I represent but really for the entire state, Hukill said before the vote was taken. She pointed out that the Speedway and parent company, International Speedway Corp., inject about $1.6 billion into the state economy on an annual basis.

Hukill said after the meeting the bill will go before another committee soon.

Its got some steps to make, she said, adding shes very optimistic about its chances of becoming law by the end the 2014 legislative session, which begins in March. But were not going to take anything for granted.

Speedway president Joie Chitwood III, who attended the meeting, said he was pleased with the reception of the bill.

Its the start of a long process, he said. Im sure well be in Tallahassee over the next couple of months.

A similar bill failed to become law last year. It sought an additional, one-time $10 million rebate on construction materials.

Mail carriers ask for assistance with snow - January 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

January 7, 2014 Mail carriers ask for assistance with snow

Anonymous Westside Flyer The Hendricks County Flyer Tue Jan 07, 2014, 02:50 AM EST

As the inches of snow increase by the hour throughout Indiana, the Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes.

The weather forecasters predict even more of the same next week, which means cold, icy conditions will remain and we can expect several more snowstorms before spring arrives.

One seasonal tool is expected to make its return at homes and businesses the shovel.

Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow, Indianapolis Postmaster Gary Soultz said. Maintaining a clear path to the mail box including steps, porches, walkways and street approach will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service and help them get those cards and packages delivered.

Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort, Soultz said. Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.

Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

We want our letter carriers to be safe, Soultz added. We can only do this with the help of our customers.

Greenwich residents should proceed with ‘extreme caution’ Monday night due to black ice - January 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The town is warning residents to proceed with extreme caution due to the condition of Greenwichs roads on Monday night.

Using the towns reverse 911 system, Greenwich Police Department Capt. Mark Kordick warned residents that evening temperatures are predicted to drop well below freezing Monday night. Melting snow from Monday afternoons warm temperatures and rainfall have left many walkways and roadways wet and, because of that, dangerous driving conditions will be present when roadways freeze over and so-called black ice forms.

Capt. Kordick said that there is also significant potential for ice accumulations on walkways, sidewalks and outdoor steps and stairs. On Sunday, black ice was a severe problem throughout the county as Greenwich experienced similar conditions from a freezing rain event. Capt. Kordick said that, many motor vehicle collisions and slip and fall injuries some serious were reported.

Greenwichs temperatures are predicted to fall below 32 degrees a few hours after dark on Monday night and remain below freezing all day Tuesday. Because of that, the town is advising all residents to exercise extreme caution if moving about outdoors or driving especially after 7:00 p.m. Monday night.

Capt. Kordick said that frail and elderly, people who are unsteady on their feet or those who are mobility impaired will want to exercise special care in icy environments.

Beyond the potential for icing conditions, bitterly cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow will represent a danger to those outside without proper clothing, Capt. Kordick said. Rapid temperature drops can also negatively affect underground water mains, pipes in buildings and other infrastructure. Please be wary of these dangers.

Capt. Kordick said that all of the towns public safety agencies are fully staffed and prepared for what could be a significant freezing event during the overnight period. Public works crews were out Monday afternoon treating roadways Capt. Kordick they will remain on the job through the night.

Even so, drivers should make every effort to get off the roads by early evening and everyone should use extra care when moving about outdoors after temperatures drop below freezing, Capt. Kordick said.

Milwaukee Postmaster reminds residents to clear snow from walkways - January 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MILWAUKEE -- The U.S. Postal Service is reminding customers to help letter carriers this winter by promptly clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes.

"Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow," Milwaukee Postmaster Easton C. Wright said in a statement Thursday. "Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox, including steps, porches, walkways and street approaches, will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service and help them get those letters and packages delivered on time."

Mail delivery could be delayed if streets or walkways are deemed too dangerous for carriers to cross or if snow is plowed against the mailbox.

Many municipalities require residents to clear pathways by a certain time after snowfall ends.

In Milwaukee, private property, residential and commercial property owners have 24 hours after the snow and ice have stopped falling to clear the sidewalks abutting their property, including the corner crosswalk.

Violators who are reported to the Department of Public Works are issued a notice and will be charged an inspection charge of $25 for the first notice, $45 for the second, and $90 for additional violations. If the sidewalk is not clear the next day, a sanitation crew will clear a path and a charge will appear on the property tax bill.

Residents who own single family homes who are physically unable to clear the sidewalk in front of their home can apply for assistance from the Sanitation Division after a snowstorm exceeding 4 inches.

Stephenville teen providing free shovelling service to seniors - December 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Inspired by something he read on Facebook, Julien Guignard is offering a free shovelling service to seniors in Stephenville.

    Frank Gale photo

Julien Guignard shovels off the step of the residence of a senior couple in a free service he is providing this winter.

Julien said he read how times are tough for some seniors and that it gets expensive for them to get steps and walkways shovelled, if they are able to get someone to do it at all.

The 16-year-old decided he was going to provide that service free of charge when hes available to do it after school hours, and got his mom Patti to do up some small posters and put them out around at different locations.

In the meantime, he and his mom have been driving around Stephenville and looking for people who need help.

Theyve done a few places, including some shovelling of the step and porch area at the animal shelter in Stephenville, a couple of places at the seniors complex located on New Mexico Drive and at an elderly ladies house on their own street, St. Clare Avenue.

Since putting out the posters, theyve even received several calls from Alberta, with sons and daughters asking them to look out for their moms property.

Its a big worry for people who are away and have parents here but no other family, Patti said.

She hopes more people will call and take advantage of the free service Julien is providing, that she helps him out with.
