THE first stage of the cenotaph relocation plan occurred with the removal of the tree that has long adorned the lawns of the Mount Isa Civic Centre this week

THE first stage of the cenotaph relocation plan occurred with the removal of the tree that has long adorned the lawns of the Mount Isa Civic Centre this week.

With a unanimous decision by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL to relocate the cenotaph in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove, the plan to create a new memorial in the prominent CBD space was set in motion.

The trees removal and relocation comes as plans for the 2015 Anzac Day ceremony, including brand new cenotaph, commence.

Mayor Tony McGrady said the removal of the tree marked the beginning of an exciting project that aimed to best recognise and honour war heroes from throughout the region and the nation.

The existing tree has been relocated to the Mount Isa City Council nursery, where it will be cared for and nurtured, he said.

The tree will eventually be replanted at its new home within the Mount Isa Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

The trees removal makes way for the new memorial that will feature an eternal flame, distinct landscaping and full lighting which will allow the people of Mount Isa to remember fallen heroes at any time of the day.

Anzac Day 2015 in Mount Isa is set to be an unforgettable ceremony, with plans by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL sub-branch currently underway.

Stockton Man Surveys Damage after Tree Falls into Home - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    STOCKTON-

A Stockton resident is assessing the damage at his home after a tree came crashing into his kitchen Wednesday afternoon.

The tree that came crashing down into the home is a Heritage Oak Treeand this is where the issue lies its a tree protected by the city but ended up as a danger for the the Rubianes family.

We heard this big bang, Rubianessaid.

That loud sound, is a Heritage Oak tree. Its taking stock in Raymond Rubianesshome, a house hes loved for 15 years, and is now damaged by a protected tree.

Scared us both (he and his wife) because we had a feeling this was going to happen, he told FOX40.

The two were eating lunch in their bedroom when the tree came crashing down. Both safe, but shaken.

I thank God that Raymond and I are alive, Rubianes wife told loved ones who visited and comforted the couple Thursday morning.

Rubianes claims hes been trying to get clearance from Stockton officialsto trim and maintain the tree for years.

They were passing the buck. I asked somebody, Oh, you got to call this other person. I call the other person, Oh, you have to call this other person, Rubianes said.

Major Orinda thoroughfare set to be closed until late tonight to remove downed tree, fix power lines - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ORINDA -- A .7-mile stretch of Miner Road, between Camino Pablo and Camino Don Miguel, has been closed in both directions since about noon Wednesday due to a fallen tree that brought down power lines, according to Mark Nagel, Orinda's police chief.

PG&E and a tree removal company are on site working to clear the fallen tree and power lines, but the road is expected to remain closed until 11 p.m.

Nagel said the police department received a report of the large tree down at 11:50 a.m. and PG&E responded promptly, cutting off power through the affected lines to prevent fires.

"It's going to hit commute pretty hard," Nagel said. "We haven't had this much water and that kind of storm in a long time, I actually expected more. Fortuantley that's all we had," he said.

Stockton residents fearful after tree falls into home - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Stockton family is cleaning up Thursday, just one day after a storm caused a large tree branch to fall into their home.

This incident has struck fear in neighbors who are worried about trees near their homes.

We could have gotten hurt really bad or we could have been killed, said Raymond Rubianes, who lives in the home crushed by the tree.

Rubianes said he is lucky to be alive after a huge oak tree branch crashed into the middle of his dining room. He and his wife were inside the home but were not hurt.

We were in the kitchen and decided not to eat at the kitchen table and eat in another room," Rubianes said. "We would have been sitting right there."

Rubianes said he had been concerned about the oak tree for years and had called the city to ask if he could get rid of the tree, but was told no.

Being (on) my property, I thought I could take it down, but a few years back, they wouldnt allow it because it's a historical tree, said Rubianes.

City officials said there are some requirements before cutting down certain trees in Stockton.

There are certain types of oaks that are referred to as heritage oaks, and if they're on private property, you would need to obtain a permit if you wanted to remove the tree, Stockton spokeswoman Connie Cochran said.

However, the city said it never received a permit application to cut down Rubianes' tree.

Loma Portal family donates star pine - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The journey of the Ocean Beach Christmas tree always has a good backstory and this year was no exception.

The tree was donated by a family in the Loma Portal area. Sal and Nancy DeMaria, local realtors, have owned their home since 1996. Nancy said, "When our kids were in high school, kids would come and [toilet-paper] the tree, and it was always a lot of work to get that toilet paper off of there. One year we had to hire a cherry picker to get it all down."

Sal told me "that the star pine was probably planted at the time the house was built in 1931. It would have been a sapling then, and has grown about a foot a year since that time."

Claudia Jack of the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association has been organizing the removal and setup of the tree for the past 22 years. She told me that she has trees lined up for the next three years.

"As far as I know, we are the only beach community in the country that has a tree put right into the sand," Jack claimed. "There is a permanent manhole beneath the sand that is eight feet deep. The tree still has to be trimmed to get it to fit into that hole."

Usually, homeowners donate a tree because the roots are undermining their house, but Sal told me, "Nope, no problem with the roots. We just wanted to donate the tree to the community."

Jack told me it can cost $5000 and $6000 to have a tree of this size removed. This year's tree was about 65 feet once it was put into the sand; the crane operator reported that the tree weighs 10,000 pounds.

Locals have been posting comments on social media wondering if this tree will have the usual Charlie Brown Christmas tree look. Other than some crookedness at the top where it was sheared off by winds a few years ago (and a new top regenerated), it is one of the more normal-looking trees for O.B. Onlookers watching it being planted in the sand were already complaining that it looked "too normal."

O.B. Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 6, at 5:05 p.m. On December 4, at 5:30 p.m., the Ocean Beach Town Council will hold their holiday auction at Sunshine Company Saloon to benefit a food and toy drive. The old O.B. entryway sign will be up for auction this year.

St. Pete may go out on limb, require permits to trim trees - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ST. PETERSBURG Trimming mature or so-called grand trees and clearing house lots in the city could become more complicated.

The city council is expected to consider an ordinance Thursday that would require a permit even to trim any tree that measures more than 30 inches in diameter at chest height. It also would require builders to leave at least two trees on each housing lot, defined as 5,800 square feet or more, that they propose to clear for construction.

Councilman Steve Kornell, who pushed for the changes, said the goal is to keep and protect the citys tree canopy, and also to help residents ward off overzealous or unscrupulous tree trimmers. Careless trimmers can damage or kill trees, and some have gone door-to-door trying to persuade homeowners to do questionable or illegal work.

Complaints about one particular operator brought the issue to light about a year ago, Kornell said. It took several months to get this guy to stop doing this, he said.

The amended ordinance requiring permits for trimming wouldnt affect developers, but rather it is aimed at helping and protecting residents and resolving confusion regarding what is and isnt allowed, Kornell said.

A committee of residents and city staff members began meeting on the issue about a year ago. A public hearing about the ordinance is scheduled for Dec. 18.

We encourage people to keep mature trees, just to keep more tree canopy, Kornell said. I think theres a lot of value to it. Even on the interstate, sometimes you can drive and see nothing but trees, and it really looks nice. We just want to make sure it stays protected.

Kornell hopes later to add a requirement to put all permits on the citys website so residents can check if they have questions about tree-trimming operations they see. It just makes things more transparent, he said.

It also can protect homeowners, who could be responsible for fines for illegal tree removals. Already, he said, the city Parks and Recreation Department can answer questions about how to choose a credible tree trimmer or what credentials to seek, or maybe even suggest contacting an arborist.

Protecting grand trees increasingly has become an issue in cities. Safety Harbor is developing a new tree ordinance after 14 mature trees were chopped down to make way for a parking lot at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa in September. The city commission imposed a moratorium on tree removal permits until April as it considers expanding the definition for a grand tree, higher permit fees, stricter fines for violators and the replacement of trees that are removed.

SF eases removal of problematic ficus trees as new storm approaches - December 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Removing at-risk ficus trees in San Francisco just got easier for property owners and The City, as the region braces this week for what could be its largest storm yet this season.

Though stormy weather over the Thanksgiving weekend brought down weakened ficus tree limbs onto cars, and a construction worker was injured by a falling limb during mid-November rain, a new order easing the removal of such problematic ficus trees has been in the works for several months, said Rachel Gordon, Department of Public Works spokeswoman.

The initiative, signed by DPW Director Mohammed Nuru on Nov. 24, relaxes the removal standards for individual ficus street trees across The City by requiring only one of numerous criteria to be met.

Trees are considered vulnerable to failure if they are at least 50 feet tall, have competing trunks or have a live canopy that makes up less than 30 percent of the tree. Other criteria are that the tree has roots that have been pruned at least two times, has a history of limb failures, or has a canopy or trunk that conflicts with streetlights or power lines.

Previously, requesting the removal of a ficus tree typically required more than one of such criteria to be identified.

"We don't want to remove any trees from The City if we don't have to ... [but] we really felt this was in the best interest in the public to look at the at-risk trees and make it easier for people to remove the trees," Gordon said.

Trees recommended for removal will be posted with a notice to alert the public, and anyone who objects to the removal has 30 days to file a formal protest. That would trigger a public hearing from which an administrative officer would determine the tree's fate.

It's unclear what the new order will cost The City, but DPW officials estimate that removing a fully mature ficus tree costs between $1,000 and $1,500. Of the 2,700 ficus street trees in San Francisco, about 1,400 are maintained by The City.

Dan Flanagan, executive director of the Friends of the Urban Forest, applauded the new order, but said it would be easier and less expensive for municipalities to take care of all ficus street trees.

"Ficus trees have a tendency to fail, and if you're not pruning them on a good cycle [such as every] three to five years, bad things can happen to those trees," Flanagan said.
