Residents in Des Moines' Sherman Hill neighborhood are upset after an oak tree, believe to be 100-years-old, was uprooted because of construction on a gas leak in the neighborhood.
The Des Moines Register newspaper reports that the MidAmerican Energy Company had been looking for a leak in the gas main.
Company surveyors said they located the leak directly underneath the tree, which was removed on Tuesday.
MidAmerican spokesman Ashton Newman said other ways of dealing with the gas leak were considered, but it was determined that they would disrupt the neighborhood with more digging, disrupt service or affect other trees.
Des Moines City Councilman Skip Moore, the former municipal arborist, has called for an emergency meeting with city officials to discuss the process for removing trees.
Moore said the downed oak will likely be turned into mulch.

Background: I'm Middle Eastern originally, and have been using sugar wax most of my life to remove hair, however it's always easier when someone does the waxing for you, as when you do it alone it can be very messy. But I was fed up of spending so much money on getting waxed and I decided to do it myself.
Usually sugar wax is used at room temperature when you just want to do basic spreading and pulling (it's a technique you have to learn through observation, then trial and error). But I liked Moom's idea of using a couple of extra tools ( spreading stick and cloths) to get the job done with less agony. And after a couple of sessions here and there, and much experience generally with sugar wax, I can say this is my favorite way to use this product:

An elderly Scarborough couple who thought they were left out in the cold after the wood from a chopped-down tree was hauled away will likely be warm and toasty for many months to come.
Patrice Stephen-Bourgeault and her husband, Laurent Bourgeault, usually burn firewood to keep warm during the winter. Recently, the couple agreed to have cut down a large silver maple tree that was on the property line between their home and their neighbours.
The Bourgeaults say their neighbours, who are building a new home, agreed to pay for the tree removal. The couple believed they would be able to keep the firewood after the tree was gone. But that was not written in the contract, and the tree-removal company took the wood away.
"I didn't think he would take it," Stephen-Bourgeault told CTV Toronto. "I said that's my tree, that's my wood."
Surprised that they couldnt keep the firewood, the Bourgeaults contacted CTV Toronto's Pat Foran to share their story. The report aired on Monday, and shortly after, viewers expressed an interest to donate firewood to the couple.
On Tuesday, dozens of tree companies, arborists and Good Samaritans showed up at the Bourgeaults home to deliver firewood.
"I'm flabbergasted. Toronto is a good place, (there are) good people," Stephen-Bourgeault said. "Thanks to the community, thanks to Toronto."
The Bourgeaults say they likely have enough firewood for the remainder of the winter, and many more to come.
According to tree removal companies, many homeowners often want the wood taken away after a tree has been removed. They say if a homeowner wants to keep the wood, its important that those details are written in the contract.
With a report from CTV Toronto's Pat Foran

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
Some people who live on Sullivan Drive in Whitehaven say a large tree limb covering the roof of a vacant house is becoming an eyesore in their neighborhood.
The house is in the 400 block of Sullivan Drive, which is in the Lacey Mosby's Whitehaven Park Subdivision.
Fred Cotton says his neighborhood has been overlooked. He lives next door to the "eyesore" and he says he is sick of it.
I'd like for them to tear the house down, he said.
Neighbors say the tree limb fell during a storm several months ago. Cotton says he has gone as far to cut the grass in the front yard himself.
Yeah, it bothers me because it brings the property value down, he added.
I'd like to see somebody come and do something about it instead of letting the tree just lay on top of the house, agreed neighbor Kenny Porterfield.
One street over on Alice Drive, there are two more abandoned homes.
WMC Action News 5 uncovered that City of Memphis has a record of 906 dilapidated homes (693 were demolished) in 2014 and 292 homes were boarded up.

The work to be covered by the new contracts will consist of pruning 3,767 trees in an area bounded by Riverside Drive to the west, Fifth and King avenues to the south, North Star Road and Northwest Boulevard to the east and Lane Avenue to the south.
A tree-pruning program city officials said improves safety and enhances neighborhood appearances will cost the city more than $97,000 this year.
Upper Arlington City Council voted 6-0 Feb. 2, with President Don Leach absent, to approve $97,617 in contracts for winter tree pruning.
According to a staff report from Steve Cothrel, Upper Arlington's parks and forestry superintendent, the city prunes trees on a six-year cycle.
He said the work to be covered by the new contracts will consist of pruning 3,767 trees in an area bounded by Riverside Drive to the west, Fifth and King avenues to the south, North Star Road and Northwest Boulevard to the east and Lane Avenue to the south.
The report said the area contains the city's largest population of trees.
"The work is necessary to provide adequate clearance over streets and sidewalks, remove dead, decayed and hazardous limbs and to improve tree structure, service life and safety, as well as neighborhood appearance and property values," the report said.
Per council's action, Russell Tree Experts will receive $51,371 to perform work in three sections, and Davey Tree Expert Co. will receive $46,246 for work in one section.
During the Feb. 2 conference session at which council approved the contracts, Councilman David DeCapua expressed concerns because Russell's bids were at least 50 percent lower for sections of work than those from three other bidders.

NEWS Ordinance protects trees from 'frivolous removal' by Mairead Crotty | Feb 09 2015 | 9 hours ago
The Charlottesville Tree Commission announced a new method for protecting trees important to the Charlottesville community in a Feb. 6 press release. While City Council approved a tree protection ordinance in Nov. 2013, the City of Charlottesville recently approved protection for the first round of trees.
In order to be protected under the ordinance, a tree must fit into one of four categories: heritage trees, memorial trees, specimen trees or street trees. The categories are determined by the trees cultural or historical significance, its existence as a commemorative memorial, its notable size or quality for its particular species or its location on private property or street right of way, respectively.
Tree Commission Vice-Chair Paul Josey said he hopes the ordinance will encourage residents to appreciate the benefits trees provide the community.
For the most part, were trying to protect trees from frivolous removal, he said. Its a way for people to be aware of the value of trees on their property and protect them.
Josey said trees provide many benefits to the Charlottesville community including a habitat for many species of insects, animals and birds and the ability to collect up to an inch of rainfall resulting in a more cost efficient city sewer system.
From a business standpoint, you look at the trees on the Downtown Mall, he said. Without trees, outside seating would be unbearably hot. Restaurants are often associated with the canopy above.
Josey said the places that are most cherished often have big trees, citing specific old trees on Grounds.
Trees provide a lot of value for places, he said. They make property value go up because the property feels older and more established.
Residents can suggest public trees for nomination or nominate trees on their own property for protection by submitting a form online. The nominated trees will be examined by city officials including the City Council, Tree Commission and City Arborist. If the tree is deemed valuable to the community, any person who attempts to remove the tree could receive civil penalties.

Plans for protecting Wisconsin Dells ash trees as well as plans for celebratingthe citys trees were discussed Monday afternoon at the Dells Tree City Advisory Committee meeting at the municipal building.
The committee finalized plans for protecting the citys ash tree population from the imminent arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and also began preliminary planning for the citys Arbor Day festivities in April.
A December mailing from the committee alerted 65 property owners with ash trees in the right-of-way along their properties of the EAB plan and recommended a treatment option for each ash tree. The letters recommended either applying a preventive treatment or removing the tree completely, depending on the condition of each tree involved and requested feedback in case the property owner preferred an approach other than the one recommended.
All of the citys ash trees will be treated or removed, said committee secretary Debbie Kinder when reached by telephone, because local infestation by the Emerald Ash Borer is imminent if it has not begun already. Kinder said the exotic beetle which has infested ash threes between here and Detroit and has gotten as far south as Georgia since it showed up in North America by way of the Great Lakes shipping channels already has been spotted at Mirror Lake State Park.
When [the borer] does hit, it kills all of the ash trees and they all die at once, Kinder said. That brings the danger of having all these dead trees at one time, and trees are a lot more difficult to remove when they are dead.
Where ash trees are removed, the citys goal is to replant a different species of tree, Kinder said, with the hope of adding to the citys tree species diversity. The decision to re-plant, she said, depends in part on each property owners preferences, because the city and the property owners share equally in the expense of tree care including trimming, removal or re-planting in the right of way.
The ideal goal is to maintain our canopy if we take one down, we want to replant one, she said. Not every property owner wants a new tree planted.
Cutting efforts on the trees identified for removal will begin as soon as weather permits, and the city will advise affected property owners ahead of time. The treatment application to the remaining trees will take place in the spring.
Even though the deadline for feedback was Jan. 15, Kinder said affected property owners who received the letters still have time to weigh in.
The committee also discussed preliminary ideas for the citys celebration of Arbor Day on April 24. The citys observance will include a tribute tree planting ceremony at Bowman Park and other local activities on that day, as well as Arbor Day-oriented activities at the monthly Dells-Delton Community Supper the following Tuesday, April 28.
