Cambridge Department of Public Works crews were taken aback when on a routine job to remove an unsafe tree, they discovered a screech owl living inside, our news partners at Wicked Local reported.
Workers had already removed branches from the 40-year-old tree before their work was interrupted two weeks ago by the owl. Unfazed by traffic and the curious passersby, the owl has become a celebrity at the corner of Huron Avenue and Larchwood Drive.
A photo of the white and brown owl posted on the DPWS Facebook page on March 16 has kept social media users mesmerized, and it has received 217 likes and 49 shares.
There is life in dead trees, Patrick L. Barton wrote on the DPWs Facebook page. Bonnie Peters asked on Facebook if DPW could leave the tree up because owls use the same nesting trees year after year. However, City Arborist David Lefcourt said that the Norway Maple tree has to be removed for safety reasons and a new tree will be planted.
I thought it was pretty cool just to see that an owl had taken a presence in the trunk there, said Lefcourt, who drove to Huron Avenue the day he heard about the owl. I wanted to go and see it for myself.
Lefcourt said it is common for crews to hold off doing work on trees until animals have left, but he said this was the first time an owl has been spotted. In the past, squirrels, raccoons, and other birds have halted work, he said.
Jean Rogers, chief ranger at the Water Department Fresh Pond Reservation, on the other hand, said that screech owl sightings are quite common in Cambridge.
Weve had screech owls around the neighborhood for a long time, Rogers said.
Weve had a screech owl on and off in a tree on Huron Avenue for six years.
According to Rogers, Cambridge is home to several types of owls who have been nesting in the city for many years.

DPW halts tree removal after finding screech owl inside
North Stonington Despite an hour-long and, at times, heated discussion, the North Stonington Board of Selectmen Tuesday night opted to allow Asplundh Tree Expert Co. to cut down six trees near Route 2 and Hewitt Road.
First Selectman Nicholas Mullane said the trees not only block the view of drivers turning onto Route 2 from Hewitt Road, but also have been a "hazard" for decades. He said he knows of 14 people who died on the Route 2 curvein part because ofslamming into one of the trees.
Resident Madeline Jeffery, however, objected to thequick decision to remove trees she called iconic.
"The tree line, the aesthetics that used to be there, it's all chopped up, it doesn't exist anymore," Mullane said. "I'm sorry, but it is a safety issue, it has been a safety issue, and we can't ignore it."
Jeffery had less of a problem with the tree removal than with the way it was initiated. When members of the Hewitt Farm Committee told Mullane of the visibility issue, he called on a tree cutting company, Stephen Holliday of Public Works andultimately on the state to resolve the issue. But, though the town marked only six trees to come down, Mullane said, the tree company marked more than 20 others, saying they would take down wires if they fell.
"The process should not be taking place in this room with just me talking," Jeffery said. "Those trees are coming down and you know it, I know it. You can call me a tree hugger, but this goes way beyond that."
She said the process was "not right" and that other groups, such as conservation and planning and zoning, should have been involved before a decision was made.
"That little part of Route 2 is an icon for everything that I believe in," Jeffery said, calling for more town involvement in what occurs along the road. "I had no way of knowing that these trees were coming down until I pursued it ... this is not how I believe government should work."
To a degree, Selectman Bob Testa agreed, saying he wished he'd been "brought into this at the beginning stages." He said he didn't learn of the issue until a March 26 email.
But Mullane said it all "developed and evolved in the last 10 days," and Testa made a motion to proceed with the removal of the six sight-limiting trees.

Residents may have more options for getting troublesome trees removed after an update to the citys tree policy the City Council has been discussing.
The 18-year-old policy now limits removing trees to those that pose a risk of falling or are diseased.
Proposed modifications would allow trees to be removed in some non-risk management situations, such as trees that produce a lot of droppings or have view or shade issues, Public Works Director Michael Wolfe said.
But making it easier for residents to have some trees removed wont come at an additional cost to the city, applicants for the so-called convenience removals would be required to cover the entire cost.
The proposed modifications will allow property owners to get more value from their property, resident Ken Peterson said. Yes, theres going to be some potential issues, but I think theres going to be more good than harm,
The city has had a steady flow of removal requests regarding convenience issues, but hadnt been able to do anything for those residents because of the current policy, Councilman Craig Young said.
The challenge is, short of having a policy, some residents have turned to self help, he said. So by having a policy that more specifically addresses this issue we can provide staff and residents more direction.
Young said he would support a one-year trial of the modifications if proposed.
Instead of putting it in stone, lets put it in pencil, Young said.
The proposal wouldnt mean residents could ask to have trees removed off of other properties that they felt blocked their view. But a broader policy might be considered in the future. The city of Laguna Beach adopted a view ordinance in July that gives property owners the right to preserve their views if they record them with the city. If the propertys view is inhibited, a city official will notify the offender to take restorative action.
