This depends to a large extent on why you prune. Light pruning and the removal of dead wood can be done anytime. Otherwise, here are some guidelines, but recognizing that individual species may differ is important to remember.
Pruning during dormancy is the most common practice. It results in a vigorous burst of new growth in the spring and should be used if that is the desired effect. It is usually best to wait until the coldest part of winter has passed. Some species, such as maple, walnuts and birches, may bleedwhen the sap begins to flow. This is not harmful and will cease when the tree leafs out.
To direct the growth by slowing the branches you dont want; or to slow dwarf the development of a tree or branch, pruning should be done soon after seasonal growth is complete. The reason for the slowing effect is that you reduce the total leaf surface, thereby reducing the amount of food manufactured and sent to the roots. Another reason to prune in the summer is for corrective purposes. Defective limbs can be seen more easily, or limbs that hang down too far under the weight of the leaves.
If your purpose for pruning is to enhance flowering:
Because decay fungi spread their spores profusely in the fall and healing of wounds seems to be slower on fall on cuts, this is a good time to leave your pruning tools in storage.
Now that you know when to prune your tree learn the basics of tree pruning.
For information on how to prune your trees, see our online Pruning Guide or look at our bulletin, How to Prune Young Shade Trees.

Tree Removal Cost – CostHelper.com -
August 23, 2018 by
Mr HomeBuilder
The cost of tree removal varies according to a tree's location, height, width, number of branches and proximity to utility lines or other obstacles, according to Atlanta-Tree.com[1] . Typical costs:
Simple medium height live locust tree. 1 man 2 hours just downed not cut up or removed. Job done less than 24 hours from initial contact. Just clearing a lot for a new home and this one tree couldn't be handled by us we needed a professional to ensure the safety of our neighbors homes.
The hemlock that required removal was rather large with a double trunk, (800.00). Another very large hemlock with multiple trunks had corrective pruning for 300.00. A very large sugar maple was pruned to reduce the size for 500.00 and a Crimson King maple required lighter pruning for 200.00. We had five, well-established trees worked on for 1800.00 total, including wood chipping/clean up, which was reasonably priced.
The cost of tree removal - and tree services in general - varies depending on type of tree, size and age of tree, as well as city and state laws. Not to mention the integrity of the providers. The best reviews I've found thusfar have been for Oregon Woodsmen in Salem, Oregon (http://oregonwoodsmen.com). They consult with you first, go over all your options, are knowledgeable about the tricky laws (Oregon is super protective of its nature), only charge you for what's needed, and finish their work in a timely manner.
Total was $3,500. Davio agreed to take down Limbs on Rope, instead felled large Oak which was near septic system drain station,Hoping no damage to septic. One large tree in back was also not lowered down by rope but was cut & dropped. Tore up most of my back yard. Filled some holes in yard with clay&rocks from Yard next door. Gave good dirt to my neighbor's driveway. My beautiful mountain Laurel is missing which Davio said would be saved. This has been an expensive nightmare!
One-Half of a Large Oak was already on ground. But They did not cut & lower limbs of other trees which was part of deal&price, $3600. Other Trees were dropped,& hit ground hard, septic system was under them. They took wood BUT Grass & yard torn up and was told that it wouldn't be. They took my Mountain Laurel plant which was to be left. They left trash & didn't clean all tree debris.Coming back to grind stumps. My advice ask all questions & get everything in writing.
Very Professional! Trimmed palms then top then felled the tree same day! NO STUMP NO HAULING doesn't matter price was right! 323-718-6015 ASK FOR MANNY
Quoted. Seems high for soft tree. Getting two more bids
Entire tree had to be manually roped to the location of the tree. Excellent crew; friendly and professional. Cleaned up the entire area, including the neighbor's yard and the alley.
I had 17 Trees total removed from my yard. 9 of the Tree's were mature Pine's ranging from 80'-90' and located less than 15' from my house. Climbers topped them off and roped down 3-4' sections safely. Tree's removed, limbs chipped and stumps ground in 2 days time and I couldn't be happier! These guys are insured, ISA Certified Arborist and very professional. They also removed 90' Oak Tree with 5' base for my neighbor that required a Crane and only charged him $2250
I am a Property Manger for an Apartment in Winston Salem NC. We collected 4 quotes ranging from $4200 to $12,500.00 to remove 6 massive 90' Pines between Apartment Buildings with no access! Outdoor Exposure did an amazing job and had all 6 trees down safely and stumps ground up in 3 days! Clean up was super, there professional and a pleasure to work with! Highly recommend!!!
This tree's base is over 72 inches in diameter. Close to garage, branches over garage, and its pulling up my foundation and garage floor. I got several bids they ranged from 2300.00 to 1000.00. The highest bid did not include removal of wood and the brush would be dumped on my property. He was NOT reputable, saw a woman asking for quote and thought he had a sucker.
Multiple neighbors were complaining after the last big storm that they felt our tree was unstable and could topple. We contacted alys tree service who we'd used before for trimming and they removed it and cleaned up for 1200. We had called another company and got an estimate for 1700. Some other guys in the past had said they'd try to remove it by tying a rope to the top and a pick up truck and trying to yank it out for cheap, but they seemed kinda shady. I like getting it done properly, they climb up and chop of a chunk and lower it, then lop of the next chunk, all the way top the bottom. Later they come back with a stump grinder. Since the tree was in our front yard, we called the city first to make sure it wasn't a street tree, and we got the ok. Was glad the city was able to come out quickly to give the ok on the tree, but I think it's weird that the rules seem so fuzzy.
Im with jon davis tree service. Any tree service that gives a price over the phone is dumb. there are many things that make the price. How close is it to power lines. Most states require you be (lineman certified)this employee will be higher paid. So will the cost of the job. How close can you get your chipper to the tree. If you can get you chipper close to the tree it will cost less, then one you have to drag branches 200 yard. Is it over a house, fence, etc.. Can the company sell the wood. Firewood does not sale well in Florida. You can not guess the price of a tree. A dead tree is more then a live tree. A live tree that has shed its leaves will cut cost. To many thing to mention. http://www.jondavistreeservice.com 352-799-3494
Looking for a rough quote as to what I would pay to have this taken down. Just dropped and cut up. No hauling or anything. No power lines or any obstacles in or near its path. Looking for best price so I can hire someone to take care of this for me
Excellent work performed by this company. Very professional and reasonable. This company came in gave an estimate and started right to work. Great work conducted followed by detailed cleanup. Would highly recommend.
Amazing company had a 75 foot tree cut down and hauled away in 5 hours even left some fire wood and split it for us at no cost!! Total job price was only 2800 with 2 smaller trees and all stumps ground. What a great company!!
Great price for complete removal of this eyesore
they removed two trees around 35 ft high, it took 3.5 hours per tree.
Charged 1550 to cut down 4 pine trees. Two were already dead and located far from house. The other two were live and located close to house, and the men had to climb at least 70 feet and limb them first. They also completely hauled off everything, but left the stumps since the trees were in a wooded area. Four men, roughly 8 hours of work. Insured, professional.
My neighbor's tree didn't fall but it was leaning precariously. It was a crab apple tree. Thank God it didn't hit the house. This price included hauling it away.
3 MEN REMOVED TOP AND LARGE BRANCHES FROM ROOF THEN WINCHED 50' TRUNK CAREFULLY OFF ROOF AND SWUNG SIDEWAYS WITH ANOTHER LONG LINE.VERY SMOOTH! SECTIONED TREE IN 6' LENGTHS AND HAULED AWAY. CLEANED UP LIMBS. FELLED 10 MORE DANGER TREES 60 TO 70'HIGH CLOSE TO HOUSE AND FENCE. LIMBED,BUCKED UP AND REMOVED WOOD. $2,200.00 TOTAL.
No other company comes close to the service they provide. Pin oak trees are a royal pain and when carpenter ants get into them they become a hazard. We had to have one removed and got several quotes which ranged from 600 to over 1500. These guys got the job and did an excellent job. They provide proof of ins. and the others wouldn't. I highly recommend them.
Came out the same day I called to give estimate. This estimate is for one oak tree only, about 3 ft diameter. To remove two large trees, $4600. I am still getting estimates.
Climber and 3 man team removed about an 80' pine and maybe a 90' oak leaning on the pine for sunlight in about 4 hrs. They cut the oak into 16" sections and stacked it for me to split later. Hauled away the pine and cleaned up all debris. Took down a 100' pine the next day and hauled away, cleaned up, and left stump, this cost me $1000.
The tree service had to cut and rope each piece down, and they cut it into long sections which they hauled away (to sell, no doubt). We asked that they leave a few loads of firewood, but they did not leave us anything except mud and stumps. I am having a hard time knowing that we paid them to take down a healthy (although damaged) hard wood tree which they they sold. That is stealing in my opinion!
Found this company on Google maps. The climber took his time and had everything roped down safely avoiding my house and wires. The cleanup and removal of debris left me with a good sense of normalcy. Defiantly recommend
I seen a ad on craigslist for this company, they primarily do driveway sealcoating, but offer tree cutting services, they came with 3 guys, cut down my oak tree that was 4 feet from my house, in 4.5 hours, to the stump, worked total of 10 hours, cut all the pieces in fire wood size chunks, split it all and stacked it measured the amount of wood the tree gave, was about 1.25 cord. I did not want the wood, they offered to sell the wood for me no cost, they did the advertisement for me and the wood sold on craigslist for $300.00, a guy came paid me and picked the wood up and I made my money partially back for the tree removal I very pleased with the work, and this company gave me the cheapest stump removal service which the money I made for the wood paid for it. I am very pleased with the service and the cleanup all the limbs and other debris was removed. This company was very professional and very safe. I recommend them to anyone.
They want 3209 to take down a 3o foot oak tree

Those jobs are best left to professionals because of specific skills, precision and safety precautions needed.
Saving a few hundred dollars isn't worth endangering your life.
There are many stories in the news media each year depicting the sad details of homeowners getting severely injured or killed by attempting to manage large tree limbs on their own," says Tchukki Andersen, staff arborist for the Tree Care Industry Association.
Tree servicecan be an extremely complicated and technical.
"There is so much to understand about removing live or hanging tree branches, and it is not at all like cutting up firewood on the ground with a chain saw, Andersen says.
It's also important to do your homework when looking for a tree service because any mishaps could have devastating results to your home or the rest of the yard.
Consider these factors when determining the cost of removing a tree and how it will fit into your budget:

Tree Removal Cost
The average homeowner will pay between $75 and $1,500 to have a tree removed. The national average cost is $650. There are four main factors that will affect the cost of your tree removal: the size (height) of the tree, its condition, diameter and location.
Trees can beautify a yard or a whole neighborhood, but from time to time and for various reasons they might need to be cut down. How much it costs varies according to many factors including the size and condition of the tree and the complexity of the job. As a result, there is no quick answer for how much it will cost. There are, however, guidelines you can use to get an idea of how much you can expect to pay for tree removal from your property.
Many tree removal companies charge a fee per foot of height. On average, small trees are 30' tall or less. Medium trees are between 30' and 60'. Large trees stand 60' to 80' tall. Very tall trees are 80' or taller. Most tree removal services use these size ranges as guidelines for charging.
The condition of a tree can affect the cost of removal. Trees in dangerous condition are often inspected by an arborist, a person with special training in the health and care of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants. A tree that seems to be leaning dangerously should be inspected before removal to determine how it should be cut down. Among the factors that can affect the condition of a tree are:
Dead trees are a mixed bag when it comes to the cost of tree removal. Small dead trees may be considered easier to work on as they are generally weak and brittle and will cut easier. Large dead trees are still weaker and more brittle than their living counterparts, but the weak and brittle stage makes them more dangerous to work on. Dead or dying trees in an urban environment are a hazard, and if one falls, the owner can face charges of neglect. Some tree removal services don't consider dead trees any different from a living tree when it comes to removal regardless of size. Because of the unpredictability of this factor, it's best to assume that it will cost a little bit more than removing a living tree. Ultimately, what it costs to have a dead tree cut down depends on how comfortable the tree removal service is with it.
The thicker the tree, the more it will take to remove. A tall, relatively thin tree will come down faster than a shorter, thicker tree. This will have a direct effect on the per-hour price you pay. If the trunk must be cut into sections (and they usually will), that will add that much more time to the job. Of course, a harder wood, such as oak, can make the job take even more time.
The location of the tree can affect the price of removal by 25% to 50%. A tree that is sitting comfortably away from any structures or power lines will be an easier job than a tree that is right next to your house or has power lines weaving through the branches. Many places require that a certified lineman handle anything dealing with the power lines. These employees get paid more than the others. If the tree is near a structure or any other obstruction, the branches will have to be lowered by rope instead of just being cut loose. Also, cutting down a tree that is surrounded by trees that you don't want damaged can complicate the job quite a bit. How easily the tree removal service can get to your tree is another factor. If the tree is in your front yard, access is rarely an issue. Cutting the crown and higher branches is often easily accomplished with a crane and bucket. If the tree is in your backyard, they may have to send someone to climb the tree. Also, if they're providing a chipping service, it will cost more if the branches have to be dragged any distance to the chipper.
As mentioned above, the height of the tree can affect the cost of tree removal. Other factors that can affect the price include certain species and whether or not the tree has fallen.
The average cost to remove a small tree is approximately $125 to $437 on average, since small trees are about 30 feet in height. Removing it isn't that difficult but can cost more if transplanted. You'll need to choose which direction to face it, whether in the sun or not. You can also dig the hole ahead of time to save some money. Consider calling the utility company to see if there are any plumbing lines or electricity concerns before you have the tree moved or removed.
The average cost to remove a medium tree is $175 to $900 and varies by height, which could range anywhere between 30 and 60 feet. You'll pay additional expenses like removing the stump, getting rid of any debris -- branches, leaves, etc. -- and cleanup. When you speak to the professional, ask about whether they're charging per tree or per hour, as this could widely vary what price quotes you get per arborist you call.
The average cost to remove a large tree is approximately $400 to $1000, since tree height ranges from 60 to 80 feet tall and requires more work. You might have a lot of reasons to remove a large, long-living tree like:
It's very dangerous to remove these trees, so arborists will take care in first removing all of the branches and then cutting it down. You might be able to cut costs by helping with the removal, but it varies by tree service professionals. You might also be able to rent some of the equipment yourself so professionals don't have to bring it in themselves.
The average price to remove a very large tree is around $962 to $1400. This is because very large trees can be 80 to 100 feet tall or more. They are the most complicated to remove because of factors like:
Some species of trees -- American ash, bur oak, maples -- reach over 100 feet tall and are the hardest to remove. If you have these species or similar ones who reach tall heights, it's going to be quite expensive to remove because of the work involved.
The average cost to remove a palm tree is approximately $150 to $450 to remove if their height is 30 feet. If they're 80 feet tall or more, you might spend $1,100 to $1,500 to have the tree professionally felled. Palm trees have teeth, which means they have to be roped down instead of simply cut with chainsaws. The taller the palm tree gets, the more weight they have. This means their roots are enduring a lot of stress and can eventually break, falling down into the yard's fence or your home. Professional arborists will come in and use ropes to ease it down to avoid that problem.
The average price to remove a pine tree is around $200 if the tree is 40 feet tall, but the 80-foot pine trees will cost about $1,500 because of the work and potential danger involved. Depending on the breed of pine tree you have, there could be additional work involved with removing the branches and cones. Professionals will have to wear a lot of safety gear to avoid scratches and pine getting in their eyes.
Since it reaches up to a height of 60 feet, the average cost to remove an oak tree is approximately $200 to $1,000. Oak is a very strong wood, and it's not easy to take down compared to other tree types. Factoring in its strength and girth, professionals will use heavy-duty equipment to fell the tree. It just depends on the species of oak you have and how tall it is.
The average price to remove a fallen tree is about $75 to $150 depending on the size and species of the tree. Fallen trees are less expensive to remove because a lot of the work is already done. You might pay additional costs to have the pieces hauled away. If the tree needs to be pruned -- branches removed before cutting it into pieces -- you will pay more for that service as well. If you want to have the stump removed where the tree broke off, that will cost an additional $75 to $150, depending on its girth and whether you have it grinded or completely removed.
When you hire a tree removal service, you're going to want to be sure of what they're going to do. Don't assume that tree removal also includes cutting it up and hauling it away. In fact, that is often an extra charge. Also, unless otherwise stated, stump removal is not always part of the deal. Here are some of the extras and a general idea of what they cost:
If you have had a recent bad storm in your area, whether a very strong wind or wind and rain, it's a good idea to at least have your trees inspected. A formerly safe tree may have suffered some damage or may now be in a condition where falling is a possibility. The worst time topay for tree cutters is after the fact!

Although we cant give you an exact price, we can give you an idea of what it may cost to remove your tree. The condition, size, diameter, and location of your tree will determine the cost.
A simple rule of thumb: the bigger the tree, the more it will cost.
The height of the tree. In general, the taller the tree the more costly it is to remove it.
Time of Removal: The best time to remove a tree is in their dormant season, which is February or March. Removing trees in the winter when tree service companies are less busy, may impact the price.
Some companies include taking away the tree in their estimate. Other companies make you pay an extra fee to have the wood removed. Look for this when you get an estimate.
As with many services, a company can woo new business with extremely low bids. Transparent and trustworthy tree service companies have licenses to maintain, investment in top-notch equipment to do the job right, and minimum levels of liability insurance to carry. These all factor into their rates. If you get an extremely low bid, it could mean the company might be skimping on something that will prevent them from doing a superb job. Or it could mean that in the event of an accident (e.g. the tree that they cut falls onto your house) there will be a disagreement about who is fully responsible to pay for the damages.
If you venture out and obtain multiple bids, there is a strong likelihood that those bids will not be the same. Every tree removal company will approach a job differently and consequently price their bid differently. Do your research and know what you are getting. It is tough to put a value on great service, but that is one thing we excel at after removing trees for over 30+ years.

When youre ready to have a tree on your property come down, its time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.
Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home the roots were damaging the homes foundation cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

Houston may be known as Space City, but we love our trees just as much as we cherish the stars. With neighborhoods such as The Woodlands and Kingwood, "the livable forest," there's more than just a few Houston suburbs lined with large, native trees. Of course, as sturdy and eternal as these trees seem, they're actually in a delicate balance with their surroundings. For any number of reasons, including storms, disease, pests, and others you may need professional help to maintain your trees' well-being. On the other hand, pervasive roots and above ground obstruction may also cause the tree to become undesirable.
Tree ServicesSo exactly what tree services are offered in Houston? The most common Houston tree service is tree removal, but Houston tree specialists offer a wide range of services. They can help save a diseased or damaged tree. They can give you a written estimate for what a damaged tree was worth for insurance or tax credit purposes. And they can help advise you on planting new trees. For dead growth or simply aesthetic shaping, specialists can prune your trees with a doctor's eye to the health of the tree and a hair dresser's eye to branch shaping.
Tree RemovalRemoving a large or even a medium-sized tree is a big enough project just from a physical and logistic perspective. Felling a tree is not easy, is far from an exact science, and even experienced tree professionals have known to get hurt. Plus, for trees near your house, risk to the house is also always imminent.
That said, tree contractors have gotten really good at their profession and your biggest obstacle may very well be bureaucratic. Many neighborhoods have local ordinances protecting trees. This can work against you when you're trying to remove a tree, although many homeowners find protection from these ordinances when their neighbors attempt to force you to remove your tree. If you do decide to remove your tree, talk to the contractor about chipping the branches into mulch instead of hauling it away. Also, make sure stump removal is included for the project. Often, tree removal and tree stump removal becomes two separate projects with varying costs.
Project LengthThe easy part about tree removal is that once you've hired a contractor and obtained a permit, the actual project usually doesn't last longer than a few days, if that. Weather may play a role, but rarely do you experience any extended inconvenience from having contractors working outside your home for several days. In fact, while kitchen and bathroom remodels often take longer than a homeowner would wish, homeowners more frequently find that contractors leave too early. When hiring a tree contractor, make sure you check references that the job was completely finished and after the job was done, your yard was returned to its previously manicured state.
