City of Rockport Considers Controversial Tree Removal Project - February 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ROCKPORT (Kiii News) -

The City of Rockport is considering moving forward with a major tree removal project that is fairly controversial there for area residents.

There was a first phase of tree removal that was part of a storm water management project. That part was done, and involved more of a clear cut but also a widening and deepening of the channel through there for storm water detention.

Then, Aransas First, a local non-profit, had a grant from Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries to do additional invasive removal, and spoke with the City in the summer about continuing that initial project, not as a clear cut but as selective removal.

Over the past few months, the City has been holding meetings with stakeholders and experts to decide what the best thing to do is.

"What we've been told is that the Chinese Tallow and Brazilian Pepper are on state and federal invasive lists and noxious list, and what they do is, they're very aggressive," Rockport City Manager Kevin Carruth said. "They, over time, will choke out all of the other vegetation, and basically take over everything."

Kiii News Reporter Mike DaSilva went Live from Rockport with the details.

Tree removal made easy with a crane.
The last few years the club #39;s arborist, Weston Landscaping, has begun to use a crane when removing large trees. These are typically in locations that are tight and where dropping a tree may cause damage to the ground (greens, tees, or fairways). As you will see from this video on the first hole, using a crane is also a much more efficient way to remove a tree.

Limestone County Commission Mulls Renovations, Tree Removal At Courthouse - February 6, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) -Limestone County has one of the oldest functioning courthouses in the state, and a lot of people want to keep it that way. The county commission is looking at updating the structure, but in order to maintain the historical integrity of the building, any changes have to be carefully considered.

One of the most revered structures in all of Limestone County is the courthouse in Athens. its almost a hundred years old and in need of some modernizing.

By renovating this courthouse, it may take it 20 to 30 years down the road and it will stay as the courthouse in limestone county, and it will still have meaning and purpose, says Limestone County Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee. The project would also increase the buildings functionality.

A new elevator would open the buildings 4th floor, and provide some much needed space. But it would require the removal of one of the buildings two original marble staircases, and thats a sore point with preservationists.

But, the open stairways would vent a fire throughout the building, plus theyre just dangerous.

You dont build steps like that anymore, i dont think. If you fall and you fall on the top, youre probably going to be dead by the time you get to the bottom, Menefee said. He says they expect to hear from the architect later this week and itll be up to the commission to decide just how extensive the renovations will be. Menefee says his goal is to preserve the building but keep it as functional as possible.

Meanwhile the commission expects to vote on tree removal at the courthouse as early as their next meeting. Falling limbs from two old trees pose a danger to the public and plans call for having both of them removed.
