Naperville waiting on weather to continue Sportsmans Park work - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Article updated: 2/28/2014 2:12 PM

Work to remove traces of lead from the soil at Sportsmans Park near downtown Naperville is set to resume this spring, but the park district first needs some cooperation from Mother Nature.

Removal of trees in a 17-acre area where soil cleanup will take place was scheduled to begin this week, but was delayed because of cold weather, park officials said.

The tree removal will precede the second phase of environmental remediation to remove remnants of lead pellets used at the parks three trapshooting ranges until the pellets were banned in 1998.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has approved plans for the work, after which the district hopes the site will be declared safe and in need of no further remediation.

Cleanup of Sportsmans Park began last fall after testing in 2012 confirmed suspicions the park was contaminated with lead from the shooting ranges it has housed since roughly 1948.

Martam Construction last fall removed traces of lead found outside the parks eastern fence line for $490,457.

Executive Director Ray McGury said the park district now is preparing to seek bids for the second phase of lead cleanup this spring to remediate a larger area inside the fence line. The work can begin once the ground thaws.

The company chosen will excavate and remove affected soil, then treat and replenish remaining soil in the 17-acre area.

But first, the park district must remove trees inside the zone where lead is present.

Oklahoma Power Crews Stay Prepared For Possibilities - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    COLLINSVILLE, Oklahoma -

With the possibility of ice in the forecast, area electric companies have plenty of people on standby in case there are power outages over the weekend.

They hope having plenty of resources to react to a storm and the proactive steps they take ahead of time will make a big difference.

At Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative in Collinsville, there are plenty of supplies and equipment on hand in case they are needed.

Transformers, electric poles, miles of electric lines, you name it. Plenty of manpower also will be available.

"We normally keep a couple of crews on call all the time, but when impending weather comes in, we make sure we keep them all on call," VVEC Operations Manager Randy Riddle said.

Electric lines are designed to typically handle a half-inch of ice buildup.

But Verdigris Valley Operations Manager Randy Riddle says wind and tree limbs close to lines are also big factors when it comes to power outages.

"If the wind is blowing right, it will bend down over and if it falls across a line, snap a line, then you have problems," Riddle said.

Electric Co-ops and power companies are more aggressive in tree and branch removal since the 2007 ice storm, when hundreds of thousands of customers lost power statewide.

Braley Bill Would Help Iowans Deal with Ash Borer - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - First District Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Waterloo, on Wednesday introduced legislation that would restore funding to programs that help combat the emerald ash borer, a tree-killing pest identified in eight Iowa counties.

The proposed legislation would fund two U.S. Forestry Service grant programs that would help communities combat the spread of the beetle.

Resources were available to Ohio, Indiana and other states when they had this problemand Im going to fight to ensure that Iowans are treated fairly, Braley said.

The legislation will help Iowa communities and homeowners with significant potential costs associated with ash borer infestations, he said.

The bill would provide an additional $20 million for two U.S. Forestry Service grant programs that help cities pay for tree removal and replacement. It would also restore $37 million to the USDA Office of Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services, which researches ways to combat the spread of invasive species like the ash borer.

After other states had dealt with infestations, funding for the program was dropped to $8 million, leaving Iowa without resources previously available to other states, Braley said.

Iowas first ash borer infestation was found in Allamakee County in 2010. It has since been confirmed in Des Moines, Black Hawk, Cedar, Jefferson, Union, Wapello and Bremer counties.

Of Iowas estimated 55 million ash trees, about 3.1 million are in urban areas, where removal costs have been estimated at about $1,000 per tree.
