You see them around town. Trees marked with a red "x" that are considered dangerous and on a list to be cut down. But how long is it supposed to take?
The Spomer girls believe they're standing in the shadow of danger. Christina Spomer says, "If there's a big storm I think it will fall sometime Sara Spomer says, " Some of the pieces already came off in a storm."
The silver maple across the street stands in the right of way right in front of Bryson Wiser's home. Bryson says, " I feel like if its dead, this whole thing could fall and land on my house."
Declared unsound and a hazard the tree will be cut down by the city which sent notice of removal four years ago. Not only did the city send this letter implying the danger of this tree in September 2010 the x marking its removal has almost faded.
But a safety concerns remain vivid in the eyes of neighbors. Marie Spomer says, " Were taking a risk no matter what with this tree because every time there's a storm we have sticks and parts of the tree that come down."
Fact Finders contacted the city forester who tells Bryson its matter of priorities. John Wynn Omaha city forester tells Wiser, " I can see your issue with the roots and its on our list. But we have so many other trees in the city that are in worse shape but we'll try to get to this one in the next couple of months."
The forester says the tree's canopy shows signs of life but that won't erase stability concerns that the city promises to remove four years later.
The city forester says there are about seventy five trees on the "A" list scheduled for removal. Not only is the one we showed you moving up but a tree next door may come down the same time.

In Bristol, if a town owned tree that is otherwise healthy causes damage to personal property, the homeowner may have to live with the nuisance.
Bryan McWilliams, who owns a home at 114 Hopeworth Ave., sought the advice of the Town Council on Wednesday, June 25, after Tree Warden Mike King refused his request to remove two of the three pine trees from the edge of his property.
Mr. McWilliams said that since buying his home in 1997, the town-owned pine trees on the sidewalk of Berry Lane abutting his property have become a nuisance and he has offered to pay for their removal and replanting of deciduous trees in their stead.
Sap and other residue are getting onto our vehicles. Branches have broken our fence panels, Mr. McWilliams told members of the Town Council.
But, said Mr. King, the two large pine trees are healthy trees.
With the town administrators office receiving about 25 tree-related requests each week for pruning, trimming and removal, those that present a safety risk are given priority.
Anything could happen. In my best opinion these trees are fairly safe, Mr. King said. I see so many other trees that need work.
By allowing homeowners to pay for town trees they dont want, it could set a precedent, he said. It might set off a frenzy, Mr. King said.
To date, the town grants the removal of a tree if it has failed and is unhealthy, if it needs to be removed to allow for a curb cut, or if it poses a safety hazard.
Council Vice President Halsey Herreshoff, after listening to the discussion, decided the trees should be spared. My inclination is to follow your recommendation, he told Mr. King.

The powerful thunderstorms that tore through the Coulee Region last week downed dozens of trees and left even more damaged and missing limbs.
But its still possible to save your battered, beloved trees with the help of qualified arborists.
Youve got to take each tree as an individual, said Dave Johnson, a certified arborist and owner of Johnson Operating Services in Holmen. But if the tree hasnt tipped over, it can survive pretty much anything.
The first step to saving a tree is to enlist the help of an expert who can assess the situation. If its standing by itself near a house, playground or power lines, rehabilitation can be more difficult. But if the tree is in a more remote area or surrounded by other trees, the safety risk is lower.
Storm-damaged trees can be particularly dangerous, and safety to people and property is the first priority when certified arborists respond, said Glen Stanosz, a UW-Madison professor of tree and forest health. Sometimes, removal of damaged parts is possible, with retention of the tree. In some cases, the appearance or structural integrity of a tree might be so compromised that tree removal is appropriate.
Once safety has been established, the next step is cleaning up the trees wounds, Johnson said. Areas where a tree has been damaged or lost limbs will eventually start to decay, but proper pruning cuts will help the tree recover. Johnson recommends cutting damaged limbs down to a smaller branch, at least one-third of the size of the original.
Many of the trees uprooted in last Saturdays storm were some of the citys large, older trees that may have been slightly decayed, making them less structurally sound, Johnson said. Trees with weaker wood such as cottonwoods and silver maples lose branches more readily than hardwood trees like oaks.
Any type of tree is susceptible to storm damage, but there are several tree attributes and site characteristics that can increase the likelihood, Stanosz said. Moist or loose soil can decrease root stability, nearby buildings can channel wind gusts and trees can be weakened by construction near the root zone or tree structure decay. Trees with a thick, full crown of leaves can catch the wind, increasing the likelihood of blowing over.
And for those planting new saplings to replace those lost in the storm, Johnson emphasizes the importance of regular pruning to foster healthy growth and a strong branch structure.
In a natural forest habitat, trees compete to survive by growing voraciously so their leaves can capture as much sunlight as possible. But in a backyard setting, with plenty of sunlight, nutrients and water, the trees crown can become overgrown.
