Uprooted trees and scattered debris caused by a violent monsoon that blew through Tucson Sunday afternoon kept some businesses extra busy Monday.

At Raintree Apartments, 6450 E. Golf Links Road, approximately eight trees were lost some split, some blown over said the apartment manager, Gina Desisto. On top of that, the property was covered with debris.

The property has been here for 30 years, so were talking huge trees, Desisto said. Its hard to believe the wind was that strong that it took the trees down. Im surprised the buildings are still here.

Even though two large pines were leaning against the building and a couple trees were leaning on cars, there was no real property damage, so Desisto doesnt think there will be an actual insurance claim.

She brought in the landscaping company that regularly maintains the property, Summit Commercial Landscaping, to help clean up the debris, but a tree service would have to be subcontracted to handle the large trees.

Storm damage kept Quality Tree Service, a local family-owned business, busy as well. By 11 a.m., the company already had calls from 22 people wanting estimates, said co-owner Kelly Slachter. Im just running around doing the estimates of people who have called.

Degrees of damage varied, but the worst Slachter saw was a tree that had crushed the side of a house, causing significant damage to a wall.

During busy times such as these, QTS tries to help existing customers first. But, we take the calls in order of most dangerous to their family, Slacther said. For example, she said, if somebodys garage was blocked and they had to get out of the house for work, that would be a priority.

If a tree is already on the ground, Slachter says, consumers can hire a landscaper as opposed to a tree service. In the industry, theres a big difference in hiring a landscaper and a tree service, she said. If its already on the ground, you can hire a landscaper, since its not more than 8 to 10 feet off the ground. Our crew goes up off the ground.

Slachter said people often wonder why the price difference is so large. A lot of times people will call and say a landscaper came and charged $150 and you guys want to charge $450, she said. Its because the tree- care industry is considered a logger, which is a very dangerous job.

Monsoons keeping tree services busy

Police were seeking witnesses to help them piece together an incident that left a Paradise Township man in the hospital with life-threatening injuries Monday.

According to a brief press release, the 62-year-old man was trying to remove a tree in the200 block of North Lake Road when, just before 7:23 a.m., a large branch that had been cut from the tree fell on him. The man, who was not being identified as of Monday, was flown to the York Hospital, police said.

The man's injuries were considered life-threatening, but an update on his current status was not available asof Monday afternoon.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who can help detectives with additional information was asked to callthe Northern York County Regional Police Department at 717-292-3647 or leave a tip on the department's website.

Dan Ritz was already trying to catch up with a 2 1/2 month backlog of tree-removal and tree-trimming work from February's ice storm before Tuesday's rain and winds ripped through York County.

Since Tuesday, Ritz's company has logged 50 to 60 telephone calls a day from folks with tree limbs, or even entire trees, felled by the storm.

"I don't think there's a tree service in York or Lancaster county that's not feeling the same thing," Ritz, a co-owner with his two sons of Specialty Tree Service in Hellam Township, said Friday.

Tuesday's storm sliced quickly and brutally through York County, upending trees, bringing down power lines and cutting electricity to thousands.

The downed trees left in the storm's wake have meant long days for folks like Bruce Stryker, a co-owner of York Tree Service in West Manchester Township.

"Just like any major storm, it's crazy," Stryker said. "The phone is ringing off the hook."
