Yellow caution tape now surrounds the maple tree in front of the Jackson County Courthouse, marking the tree as a safety hazard and signaling that its removal may not be too far off, according to Jackson County Commission Chairman Matthew Hodges.
After having initially declared the tree set for removal several days ago due to safety concerns with its poor condition and falling limbs, the county received some backlash saying action was being taken too hastily and that the tree could be saved. With several residents opposed to the trees removal, the county opted to bring in some experts to provide their professional opinions on whether the tree could be saved.

A safety hazard
King of Prussia The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that lane restrictions are planned this week on U.S. Route 1 (City Avenue) in Lower Merion Township, Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough and Route 363 (Trooper Road) in East Norriton Township, Montgomery County, for brushing and tree removal operations.
The work schedule is:
Tuesday (Sept. 16) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., there will be a lane restriction on Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) between Spring Garden Street and Wesleys Run in West Conshohocken Borough for brushing;
Tuesday (Sept. 16) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a lane restriction on southbound Route 1 (City Avenue) between 69th Street and 66th Street in Lower Merion Township for tree removal;
Wednesday (Sept. 17) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a lane restriction on northbound Route 1 (City Avenue) between Belmont Avenue and Kings Grant Drive in Lower Merion Township for tree removal; and
Thursday (Sept. 18) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a lane restriction on Route 363 (Trooper Road) between Woodlyn Avenue and Cirak Avenue in East Norriton Township for tree removal.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the areas. The operations are dependent on the weather.
Motorists can check conditions on Route 1 (City Avenue), Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and other major roadways by visiting http://www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 700 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
