Motorists traveling on Hana Highway in Hana town are advised that there will be intermittent stops of about 15 to 20 minutes for tree removal Monday to Thursday, weather permitting, the county announced.
The tree removal will involve five Cook pine and 11 ironwood trees on county-maintained areas along Hana Highway. The trees are decaying and are at risk of falling.
The work will focus along Hana Highway, just south of Mill Place and Haneoo Road, near Hasegawa General Store.
Crews will need to close the road for about 15 to 20
minutes at a time to ensure that trees are removed safely. Whenever possible, one lane will be opened to restore the flow of traffic.
Replacement trees will be planted where appropriate.

The Hailey Tree Committee has been collecting data for several years on the number and quality of trees on city property. The city surveys about 500 trees each year, beside streets in city rights of way and in city parks. Hailey Tree Committee member and Ketchum Parks Superintendent Juerg Stauffacher reported to the City Council on Monday that the value of trees in Old Hailey and in city parks is $3 million, based on the their replacement cost. Compared to other cities in the valley, Hailey has older and larger trees, said City Administrator Heather Dawson in an interview. We have not even begun to count trees in the outlying subdivisions. The ongoing tree survey was begun to place a monetary value on the citys urban forest and prioritize tree maintenance, planting and removal projects to protect the citys arboreal assets. The survey is being facilitated by the city of Ketchum, which provides computer software to help keep up with the changing priorities of the Hailey Tree Committee. Both cities use TreeWorks software and advice from Community Forestry Consultants of Spokane, Wash. The stated vision of the tree committee for Haileys community forest includes a diverse species population with no one species comprising more than 15 percent of the population. The committee also plans to increase the number of species appropriate for the region, in a good mix of age and class sizes, including low-maintenance trees to reduce operating costs. The trees that make up the urban forest will be predominantly medium-sized trees, and be strong-wooded, states the committees vision. We have a lot a lot of large, weak-wooded trees in the city, including fast-growing cottonwoods, said committee member Carl Hjelm. Nature makes a trade. If you are fast-growing, you are weak-wooded. Cottonwoods are appropriate in some locations, like for streamside restoration, but not so appropriate close to structures or in high-traffic areas where they could create a hazard. Hjelm said the Tree Committee has listed maple, ash, oak and linden trees, which are slower-growing and more disease-resistant, for planting in more urbanized locations within the city. According to the Hailey Tree Ordinance, adopted in 2008, anyone wishing to trim or remove a tree on city property must first acquire an encroachment permit to do so. The ordinance also prohibits removal of living trees from city property, unless they are a hazard, and only then with permission from city officials. The city would have to be involved in any tree alterations, said Dawson. This is to make sure proper trimming procedures are taking place. Improper trimming includes topping off the tree, which will ruin it. Dawson said the city is working on a policy to prioritize work on specific trees on city property. If there is a tree hazard, people should contact the city, Dawson said.

It was the first call to remove the trees manually following the TCC general meeting that discussed the use of herbicides to kill the invasive trees and where a committee was formed to find a non-toxic alternative.
Carolyn Day, creator of the childrens organic garden, agreed to head up the committee and showed up with her husband, Donald Day, checked in with groundskeeper Joe Pileggi and set to work with a small power saw and a generator. When Richard Brody showed up with his weed wrench, a mechanical weed puller, the job was already done.
It took just about an hour to remove 10 trees, some with multi-trunks, Donald said as they piled the branches for disposal. The TCC should buy a wood chipper and put the chips back on the hillside as mulch.
A number of larger trees grow inside the fenced property of the trailer. Its too big a job for us, said Carolyn. Well make an emergency request to the TCC Board to have them taken down professionally. After that we can place black tarps on the stumps to discourage photosynthesis.

Rendering courtesy of City Ventures A developer looking to construct 26 townhomes near Thousand Oaks Boulevard will have its second date with the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission on Monday.
Ventura-based City Ventures first attempt to get its Clay Court project approved was thwarted Oct. 13 after the commission deadlocked 2-2. Commissioner Daryl Reynolds, who was unable to attend the original hearing, is expected back Oct. 27, according to project planner Claudia Pedroso.
If it gets the go-ahead, City Ventures proposal will be the third housing complex approved for construction on or near the boulevard since the Thousand Oaks Boulevard Specific Plan was adopted in 2011. The plan, which allowed residential units to be built on the boulevard for the first time, covers an area between Duesenberg Drive and Moorpark Road.
At the Oct. 13 meeting, commissioners Doug Nickles and David Newman voted no, objecting to certain aspects of the proposal, including the removal of 20 oak trees, eight of which would be relocated on the property at 80 and 90 Clay Court.
Nickles criticized the projects excessive impact on oak trees and the planned exportation of 1,400 cubic yards of dirt during construction.
To say this is environmentally sensitive is a disgrace, he said.
The commissioner said that the developer should build around the trees.
I see (the project) taking advantage of the pockets that are there, Nickles said. You can transplant trees but you cant transplant the habitat. And when you go transplanting trees, youre transplanting them from their native soil into an urban, compacted soil that theyre not used to. Ive seen a lot of transplanted trees die. They survive, they rarely thrive.
Newman also expressed concern about moving trees.
