Issues about private subdivision near Holiday Hills continue - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOLIDAY HILLS Issues surrounding land between a private subdivision and the village of Holiday Hills continued Wednesday after a fence separating the two was torn down days before.

At about 7:50 a.m., resident of LeVilla Vaupell Lisa Garcia saw Nunda Township Highway Department workers getting ready to take out a tree. The tree stands in front of 1313 W. Northeast Shore Drive, where two McHenry County sheriffs deputies were shot last month.

She stood in front of the tree in opposition until about noon making sure the workers could not cut it down.

Ill stand here until [the township highway commissioner] gives me a court order that says this is his property, Garcia said.

She later said efforts to cut down the tree eventually halted and a meeting between the subdivision, Holiday Hills, the Nunda Township Highway Department, and police and fire officials has been tentatively planned to resolve the issue.

The concern over the tree, and the fence that once stood next to it, stems from an Oct. 16 incident, after which Scott B. Peters was accused of shooting two deputies as they were conducting a well-being check at his Holiday Hills home. Peters now faces a prison term of 165 years to life on attempted murder charges, if convicted.

The long black fence, torn down by the township highway department Monday, ran the length of Hyde Park Avenue in LeVilla Vaupell, separating the private subdivision from the Holiday Hills version of Hyde Park Avenue. Police have said the fence interfered with their rescue of the wounded deputies and the search for Peters.

Garcia said township highway commissioner Mike Lesperance indicated to her the plan was to take the tree down and connect the two West Northeast Shore Drives, now separated by a grass median.

    Lesperance declined to comment.

Garcia and other residents said the problem with all of the changes the fence teardown, the tree removal and the road connection is the subdivision owns the small piece of land the fence was on.

Safety Harbor halts tree removal after outcry - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAFETY HARBOR In a city where trees large or small are considered prized possessions, city commissioners have imposed a temporary ban on all new tree-removal permits.

Commissioners voted 4-0 Monday to approve a moratorium that will extend until April 1, if needed. The temporary ban gives commissioners time to revamp their existing tree ordinance to protect more of the citys tree canopy and to bring all tree permitting in-house.

Safety Harbor adopted a grand tree ordinance in 2007, which protects trees that meet certain requirements. Through an interlocal agreement, all tree permits other than grand trees currently are processed by Pinellas County. But city commissioners decided last spring that what they have isnt enough. They want the city staff to draft a new tree ordinance that:

Expands the definition of grand trees.

Charges higher fees for tree removal.

    Imposes stiffer fines for violators.

Requires removed trees to be replaced with like species of similar size.

Approves hiring or identifying a city employee to handle education, enforcement and permitting.

The proposed revisions to the tree ordinance picked up steam in September after the privately owned Safety Harbor Resort and Spa removed some 14 trees on its property for a planned parking lot. The tree removal was permitted through the county, officials said.

But that didnt stop infuriated residents from picketing the resort, then marching up Main Street to attend the commissions workshop meeting regarding the tree ordinance.

The Tree Lady - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Local arborist and Billings native, Stephanie Ridl, loves small towns, family and trees. She lives in Sidney with her husband, Mike and their daughter, Katrina, 8.

I am a parks superintendent but since we dont have a community forestry department, or a city arborist, we have a need for it, Ridl said. I asked if I could take it over and they were very willing to let me.

Ridl began college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie with a focus in criminal justice before she decided to move back to Montana and peruse a degree in horticulture science.

I have always had an interest in criminal justice, even as a kid thats what I thought I would do, Ridl said. My dad has always been in landscaping and horticulture and I worked with him through high school. I know trees and I love trees. I felt more comfortable in that so I made the leap back to Montana.

After completing her bachelor of science degree in Bozeman, Ridl moved back to Billings and landed a job at a nursery center.

I just kind of missed the small town mentality and the small town folk, she said. Billings was already too big for me after Id been gone for six years.

Ridl met her now husband, Mike, who was pursuing custody of his daughter and the couple moved to Sidney so his daughter could live with them.

He has family here and so it worked, Ridl said. The jobs were good and it was a good spot to stay. We got married last year.

Ridl is a certified arborist and a certified plant professional, as well as a certified applicator. She said she loves everything about plants, but her real passion is trees.

I think one thing I really love about Sidney is that theres such a need for that right now, with the elm trees, Ridl said.
