Southgate Mall renovations begin -

An initial phase, under way this week, will include installing new travertine tile, upgraded furnishings, fresh landscaping and new fountains and lighting.
The facelift is the preface for a larger revamp that will transform the mall into more of a lifestyle center, with outdoor dining and other entertainment.
Westfield, which unveiled plans for renovation in May, intends to start the bulk of the work at the mall that will be renamed "Westfield Siesta Key" next year.
In addition to the renovation, Australia-based owner Westfield Group will add 46,000 square feet of space in a parking lot facing Tamiami Trail, creating an outdoor "street-like" feel with stone cobbled walkways and open-area, covered paths.
While Westfield won't reveal details or new retailers until sometime in 2014, the renovation is the first phase in a "multi-million dollar investment" in the property, said Sam Davidson, a Westfield district marketing director for Florida.
"It's Westfield's philosophy to continually invest and reinvest in our properties," Davidson said. "The plan for Westfield Southgate is the perfect model of that commitment.
"We're taking a very strong shopping center and adding new elements and energy to enhance its appeal for Gulf coast residents, the many domestic and international visitors as well as for our retail partners that cater to these shoppers," Davidson added. "Retailer interest in this project remains very high."
The renovation comes less than a year before Southgate is slated to lose blue-chip anchor Saks Fifth Avenue and other merchants to the Mall at University Center, a nearly 900,000-square-foot enclosed retail hub slated to open in October that has captured the region's retail buzz in recent months.
That $315 million mall, also to be anchored by Macy's and Dillard's department stores, may entice other current Southgate merchants to University Parkway and Interstate 75.

The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works (MPTW) is a history museum located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It is maintained by the County of Bucks, Department of Parks and Recreation. The museum was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972,[1] and was later included in a National Historic Landmark District along with the Mercer Museum and Fonthill. These three structures are the only poured-in-place concrete structures built by Mercer.[2]
Handmade tiles are still produced in a manner similar to that developed by the pottery's founder and builder, Henry Chapman Mercer. Tile designs are reissues of original designs. Mercer was a major proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. He directed the work at the pottery from 1898 until his death in 1930.
Mercer generally did not affix a potter's mark to tiles made while he directed the work at MPTW. Following his death, there were several marks used to indicate that a tile had originated at MPTW. When the Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation took over the MPTW as a working museum, all tiles made by the museum were impressed on the obverse with a stylized "MOR", the words "Bucks County" and the year of manufacture (see illustration).
The reproduction tiles made today are made using Mercer's original molds, clay that is obtained locally and has properties similar to those of Mercer's original source, slips and glazes that follow Mercer's final formulations, although some have been modified to reduce the lead and heavy metal content to less toxic levels.
The Tile Works is one of three poured-in-place concrete structures built by Mercer. The others include Fonthill, which is located on the same property and served as his home; and the Mercer Museum, located approximately one mile away.

Wherever there is commercial or residential construction taking place, there will be a call for skilled tile workers. Tile workers are required to lay floors, tile bathrooms and to work on large commercial walls where tile is selected for its decorative properties. There are a couple of ways that you can learn about tile working. If you learn this craft well, you can find potential job opportunities with companies that range from large commercial builders to private individuals looking to have someone come in and give them a hand on a small room.
Learn the basic steps of laying tile through self-study and through the resources that you have available to you in your community or online. For example, tile a small room in your own home to get the feel for the process. A retail store that sells tile such as Home Depot often has instructional seminars that can help you learn how to do tile competently. There are also a number of good books on the subject.
Take a course in tile work. There are short courses in tile work that you can take through community colleges and learning centers. This is a good way to get a more formal instruction in tile work from experienced floor workers before you move on to the next step. Additionally, if you have even a little formal instruction, it may help you to get a job with an experienced tile installation worker or company.
Apply for jobs with a company that installs tile professionally. The best way to learn any trade or craft is through hands-on experience under the supervision of an expert in the field. That is why most of the trades are learned through an apprenticeship style of eduction. If you want to become truly proficient at tile work, you need an experienced worker who can correct your mistakes and who can instruct you on the techniques, tips and tricks that the professionals use to make sure that they achieve excellent results on every job that they work on.
If you can't find a job with a tile-laying company specifically, look for jobs with flooring companies. You will be working with carpet, wood and vinyl as well, but you will almost certainly learn tile work along the way.
Document control work is a form of information management. While performing this work, you will design and create systems to manage documents...
Laying tile requires the completion of several separate steps, designing a layout, preparing the surface for even tiling, cutting tiles, mixing mortar...

When bidding on tile work there are many things to consider if you are to come out on top. The goal is to make a profit from your hard work without leaving your customer feeling as though he or she has been gouged for money. By taking the time to consider any obstacles that may hinder your progress, you will be ready to place a fair bid with a pleasing outcome for all parties involved.
Know your area. Prices that work in the Midwest won't get you hired in the Deep South. The flip side is that while undercutting the competition with low prices you may find yourself just getting by rather than benefiting from your expertise. A tile job in Mississippi can run as low as 60 cents per square foot while a person in Indiana will be lucky to get the same work done for $1.25 per square foot, not including the price of materials.
Decide if you want to factor in the price of materials. Often it behooves a client to pay outright for materials, then allow you to bid on the labor. If this scenario is easier for you---especially if you don't have a line of credit or rapport with a local vendor---this is the route to take.
Height matters. Ten-foot ceilings can usually be hung with ease and the aide of stilts. Anything higher than that will necessitate building and using scaffolds, taking precious time. The higher the ceiling, the higher your bid should be.
Consider the type of tile. If you are installing flat tile, your job is pretty cut and dried. However, revealed tile requires a lot of cutting and precise measuring to ensure a uniform look across the ceiling. Raise your price by at least 25 cents per square foot if you have to cut it in.
Price according to room shape. A simple square or rectangular room with minimal angles should be priced lower than a room with multiple corners and heights. These factors will once again affect the amount of time you spend laying in the tile, maneuvering around turns and scaffolds, plus the painstaking techniques required to hang the tile in a satisfactory manner.
Bid lower for a replacement job. Often a tile job will already have perfectly reusable grid in place. If you are simply replacing tile you should cut your price by at least a third. This type of job can be done in half the time and bidding it accordingly is not only fair but will probably gain you referrals in the future.

VICTORIAN POSTCARD TILES - Featured in this month's Victorian Homes!
The "Stork Delivering Baby" tile was originally created by Arthur Osborne for the JG Low Art Tile Co. of Chelsea, MA, circa 1883. In 1999 L'esperance Tile Works was asked by Sheila Menzies and Joe Taylor, of the Tile Heritage Foundation, to reproduce it as their annual Tile Award.
It was presented to the children of Barbara White Morse, to recognize her many years of research into the JG Low Art Tile Co. Her research lead to numerous published articles in magazines which focused on antiques and collectibles. She was known to many people as "The Victorian Art Tile Lady", and her recurring column in the monthly magazine, The Spinning Wheel, was called "Tiles to Treasure" Both of these inscriptions were stamped onto the front of the original award tile.
Only 4 of these tiles were made - 1 for each of her 2 children, 1 for the Tile Heritage Foundations collection, and 1 for L'esperance Tile Works collection. The tile is now available for all to collect and enjoy.
