Progress continues on new food store in Huntington Center - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The inside of the former Beechwood Market has essentially been stripped to make way for new fixtures, such as the installed refrigerator and freezer units shown in the rear.

Work continues on turning the former Beechwood Market into a natural foods store in Huntington Center.

As of last week, the inside of the 6,500-square-foot retail space had been essentially gutted. New refrigerator and freezer units have been placed across the back of the store and a walk-in cooler added on the side.

The old floor has been removed and a new tile floor will soon be put in. There also will be new lighting, shelving and check-out counters, and the entire inside will be painted.

The new store, to be named the Common Bond Market, will sell fresh produce, packaged foods, prepared foods to go, and nutritional supplements. It will have a deli, bulk-bin areas, kitchen and offices.

The landlord is building a new entrance foyer and brick facade in the front, and has added dormers to the roof.

In late August last year, Beechwood Market closed unexpectedly after more than a half century in Shelton.

Joshua Elliott, who will oversee the store, said he hopes the Common Bond Market can open its doors in late March or April. We want to open as soon as possible in the spring, he said.

‘My Victor is in Britain to work… then he will come home’ - January 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It lies less than an hours drive from Bran Castle, the fabled home of Vlad the Impaler, better known as Count Dracula, and is surrounded by fortified churches and hilltop castles.

Despite her slight frame, Miss Curcean has to chop wood with a large axe for a stove that provides the sole source of warmth in the home and draws water from a nearby well with a metal bucket attached to a chain. The village, which lies in a valley bounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Carpathians, has mud roads and none of the 300 houses has running water. Job opportunities are scarce. Even for those who find work, life is tough the average daily wage is the equivalent of 7.

Most of the young people in the village have gone abroad, to England or Spain or Germany you cant earn any money here, Miss Curcean said over a glass of the local firewater, a potent spirit called tuica.

A plastic Christmas tree stood on a wooden table, next to a rusting fridge in the only habitable space in the house a living room with pink painted walls.

Miss Curcean said her fianc planned to stay in Britain for at least a year in an attempt to earn the 4,000 to 5,000 they need to refurbish their modest home, with its sagging tile roof and cracked door frames. Only then can they get married and start a family.

She said he had no intention of bleeding dry Britains social security system. For his part, Mr Spirescu insisted that he was in the UK to work, not to steal.

I just want to earn enough money and then I will come back to my country, he told Adevarul (The Truth), a Romanian daily newspaper. Im not going to stay permanently, I dont want to give up my homeland for England.

The poverty on display in Pelisor and countless villages like it, explains why so many Romanians want to move to the UK and other rich nations in western Europe. Farmers till the fields with ploughs pulled by horses in rural scenes not seen in Britain since the 1950s.

Miss Curcean, who has to look after two younger siblings because her parents are separated and jobless like her, said she would leap at the chance of joining her fianc in Britain.

I would do anything, really anything, she said. As soon as I get a job offer or find an opportunity, I will go to England. Victor said to me, 'If I could bring you over here tomorrow, I would. Hed like to get into construction, its something hes good at. Her boyfriends handiwork is evident around the house a few yards away is an outside long-drop lavatory that he built, and their two dogs sleep in wooden kennels that he made.

Homebuyers should hire contractors and ask sellers to pay for work - January 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Glendale man says he made a big mistake during his home-buying process by allowing the seller to handle a big inspection repair. He's learned it's better for buyers to choose the contractors and for sellers to pay.

When buying his first home, Matt Segovia's inspection turned up some roof issues. He let the seller handle the repairs.

"Seemed like having the seller arrange for that would be easier, plus they had used a roofing company in the past," Segovia said.

That company was All Source Contracting, LLCin Glendale. Segovia says All Source Contracting did the repairs, and also provided an official certification.

"It said the life expectancy would be 10 years under normal wear and tear, which gave us some good peace of mind," Segovia said.

After the first heavy rain, Segovia says the roof leaked and damaged the ceiling. When he contacted All Source Contracting about the certification, Segovia says the owner told him it was nothing more than a favor for the previous owner and just an opinion.

"He had no problems with what he did, (the certification) was meaningless for me, meaningless for him, meaningless for everybody involved basically," Segovia said.

Segovia says the owner of All Source Contracting, Gabriel Noje, promised to fix the roof then reneged the next day saying All Source Contractingwas not licensed to work on tile roofs.

"To that I responded, 'well how could you guys have fixed it before, in addition, how can you have any kind of a certification?" Segovia said.

U.S. tile maker buys into Canadian ag drainage market - January 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Posted Dec. 31st, 2013

A southern Manitoba company making tile pipe for the agricultural market is about to become the Canadian arm of a U.S. competitor.

Minnesota-based Prinsco announced last week it has bought AccuPipe of Winkler, Man. for an undisclosed sum and also plans to set up a second facility at Taber in southern Alberta.

The sale of AccuPipe, which makes high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for drainage, is expected to close in the next 30 days, Prinsco said, after which AccuPipe will officially become Prinsco Canada.

Prinsco said it expects to have its plant at Taber, about 50 km east of Lethbridge, up and running in the spring of 2014, manufacturing and stocking a full line of pipe and accessories.

AccuPipe co-founder Chris Untau said Prinsco, as the companys new owner, can help build on the success of AccuPipe by offering an expanded product line, vast technical expertise, and a full network of customer service and engineering support.

Tile drainage, Unrau said, has proven itself in Western Canada as a technique to improve yields and reduce risk.

Unrau also runs Precision Land Solutions, a Winkler company specializing in design and installation of water management solutions such as tile and surface drainage and said that company will continue to work closely (with Prinsco) to advance the use of water management practices.

Our company vision is to provide industry-leading solutions for agricultural efficiency and water quality, which is critically important in the Canadian Prairies, Jamie Duininck, Prinscos vice-president of sales, said in the companys release.

Prinsco, he said, is committed to provide farmers with access to water management products that can take them to the next level of success in creating more productive fields and building land values.
