Students at Pennsbury's Eleanor Roosevelt create tile mosaic with resident artist David Woods - March 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PENNSBURY Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School students are having a blast piecing together their part of a giant puzzle.

Truth be told, its not a giant puzzle, but a mosaic made from a variety of colored tile pieces that will grace the schools interior by June.

All of the approximately 570 students at the school, as well as staff members and community members, are working on the mural at the school under the direction of David Woods, the artist in residence with the Pennsbury School District.

Students like Layla Jenkins, 11, who said she enjoys working with shapes. Students like Ryan Ward, 10, who likes looking through the tiles and choosing colors and shapes. He likes the glass tiles the most. Students like Megan Cimochowski, 11, who likes using blues, greens and purples.

The mural will be more than shapes and colors. It will include inspirational quotes from the schools namesake that will weave throughout the mural around circular geometric designs. The theme will reinforce the schools character education initiative.

Woods has designed the mural with help from the students and art teacher Pamela Soda. Students will create some tiles for the mural in art class and will work in small groups to place tiles on the mural.

Students learn to work cooperatively to create this piece of public art, said Soda. Parent volunteers will play an important role in helping the children as they work.

Soda said the creation of the mosaic is a big project.

This is the largest school-wide undertaking of my career, Soda said. I am very excited for our whole school community.

Eleanor Roosevelts mural has been financed through a donation from the PTO, as well as grants from the Pennsbury Arts Foundation, the Pennsbury Education Foundation, Pennsbury Partners, and the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership, a division of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. City Hall closed for asbestos testing - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

RACINE City Hall could remain closed most of Wednesday as officials wait to find out the full results of asbestos testing that took place Tuesday.

Officials announced they were closing the building, 730 Washington Ave., late Tuesday morning, soon after discovering that asbestos dust from an abatement project on the third floor might have escaped the containment area set up by contractors. The asbestos is being removed as part of an ongoing renovation of the third floor.

City staff noticed a small pile of dust laying outside the containment area where contractors had been doing tile work, Dickert said, and notified the administration. Employees are working on the third floor while a portion of that floor is being renovated.

Dickert said the discovery occurred right after employees arrived Tuesday morning, and that by 11 a.m. most employees were out of the building.

On Tuesday, just before 7 p.m., Dickert said crews had found traces of asbestos in the air near the place where the dust was found, but that crews were still testing the rest of the building and would likely finish at some point during the night.

Asbestos was once commonly used in insulation and other building products, but its fibers can cause health problems if they are inhaled. Removal of products containing asbestos is highly regulated.

Dickert said the amount of asbestos in the tile glue that contractors were handling is about 2 percent.

That is actually considered quite small, but asbestos is asbestos, and we dont want to take risks, he said.

Once the city finds out what the extent of the contamination is, it will determine what clean-up is needed.

We are going to go back to the company (doing the renovation work) and obviously talk to them about paying for this through their liability insurance, he said. We plan on them cleaning it all up.
