Dal-Tile building remains unsold -

ELLICOTTVILLE It has been 18 months since Dal-Tile closed its ceramic tile plant in Olean, putting nearly 200 people out of work.
While there has been some interest shown by companies that have looked at the plant on East State Street near the city line, it remains unsold.
Corey Wiktor, executive director of the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), told the IDA Board of Directors on Tuesday he has asked the Empire State Development Corp. to help pay for a consultant to help determine what type of manufacturing might best suit the plant which has rail access.
A real estate consultant would define the building and what it could offer other businesses, Mr. Wiktor explained. They would identify the businesses that need that type of structure. This would make it easier to market.
The taxes are paid (by Dal-Tile) and its kept up to (building) code, Mr. Wiktor said of the plant.
The contract with the real estate firm hired by Dal-Tile to market the plant has expired.
Mr. Wiktor said there are no guarantees Empire State Development Corp. will pay for the study, but it is a similar situation as the closing of two ConAgra plants in Chautauqua County at a cost of nearly 400 jobs. Empire State Development has agreed to fund a study of the best use of those vegetable processing and canning plants.
The IDA board also heard a presentation from John Bay, president and CEO of ENTECCO LLC of Rochester, which offers a mix of energy options to help companies get off the electrical grid and generate their own electricity. It can be done with no capital outlay by participating companies, he said.
The firm is looking to partner with the IDA to find prospective companies that could benefit from stable energy costs. A company would have the provide its electric bills for the past year for analysis to see if it would benefit.
Mr. Wiktor said one possibility might be to provide power to a corporate park near Dresser- Rand in Olean. There are also several Homer Street companies in Olean that might benefit from an independent power provider.

What sort of tiles for a bathroom? -

Luke from East Brisbane asks:
I have decided to try my first do-it-yourself tile project. I will be putting a tiled floor in my bathroom, but am not sure which type to choose. I am confused by the various types that are available. Should I use porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, or something else?
Jane says:
Tiles are a product that will be in your home for years after theyre installed, so its worth investigating and understanding your options.

Tiles are made out of several different materials and each has its advantages and disadvantages. For a bathroom, you will need a tile that is moisture and stain resistant. A tile with texture will be less likely to become slick.
Glazed ceramic tiles are a common type found at your local home improvement store. This material is durable and water resistant, but it also tends to have a slick, glass-like finish that can be slippery when wet.
Porcelain tiles combine the durability of ceramic with a low porosity, which means they will not absorb water and are very stain resistant. This material tends to be a popular choice for bathroom and kitchen floors. Porcelain styles are available that are almost indistinguishable from natural stone, giving you the beauty of stone with the durability and low maintenance of porcelain. This versatile material also comes in tiles that give the appearance of wood, which are ideal for rooms, such as basements, where the look of a wood floor can be combined with the qualities or porcelain.
Natural stone tiles come in a variety of types of rock, so it is vital to look at the specifications of the particular stone you are considering. Two popular stone tiles are travertine and slate. Travertine is popular in hot climates due to its cool feel. Slate is beloved for its colour variations, but it also has a rough, uneven texture that makes it difficult to use for flooring. All natural stone must be regularly sealed because it is not stain resistant.
If you are working in a room that has problems with unevenness, have concerns about tile weight, or you arent quite ready to use a tile saw, vinyl tiles may work for you. Vinyl tiles are light and easy to manipulate in difficult areas but of course cannot be continued through to the shower base as most tiles can.

Keltie adds that Squirells wife, who also works for Centura Tile, will also be retiring in September and that everyone in Centura Tile wishes both of them nothing but the very best.
Centura Tile will continue to excel in its operations and have already brought aboard individuals who are passionate about learning and growth, Keltie concludes. Don Bosco Athletic Director Chris Lesesne stands in the Takoma Park schools gym which is being renovated.
Bit by bit, a new gymnasium floor is rounding into shape at Don Bosco Christo Rey High School in Takoma Park. It is still unfinished, but soon enough, the boys basketball team, which used to practice on a tile floor with roll away baskets, will have a much improved court and drop down hoops.
As the court goes through its process of construction, so does the basketball program at the school that opened in 2007. This summer, Athletic Director Chris Lesesne, who is entering his second year with the Wolfpack, had the team participate in the Born to Bump Summer League at Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. The league featured top-flight teams such as Gonzaga, Wilson and Our Lady of Good Counsel. Don Bosco struggled throughout the league and failed to win a game, but Lesesne said he saw it as a great learning experience for a team that is still getting used to playing more organized basketball and features a few first-time team players.
They grew tremendously, Lesesne said. We played Maret the first game and Good Counsel throughout the regular season. We ended up playing those teams again and it was a different caliber. I believe weve earned a lot of respect no matter what the score was just on how much we matured and improved during the summer.
But the Don Bosco players, most of whom reside in D.C. and Prince Georges County and have limited financial resources, according to the school, find themselves in a unique situation. Their biggest challenge comes in the form of time management. During the school year, they have to learn to balance school, athletics and Don Boscos Corporate Work Study Program. Every student at Don Bosco participates in the program, and, according to the schools marketing director, Claire Wyrsch, mostly have entry-level clerical jobs at law firms, accounting firms, hospitals and even NASA.
It really opens their eyes to possibilities, Wyrsch said. Theyre seeing professions that theyve never imagined.
Both Lesesne and Wyrsch know that the work program will prevent the Wolfpack from ever becoming a dominant atheltics program. It provides scheduling challenges they often have to play games on Sundays when most other schools have the day off and takes time away from practice. But Lesesne and Wyrsch also reiterated the fact that the schools focus has always been on education. Lesesne believes that athletics can help instill a well-rounded high school experience for the students and serves as another key to a college education.
Were not looking to be a big powerhouse, Lesesne said. Our focus is to give our young men and women an opportunity to achieve in academics.
He credits the second-year coaching staff of Jack Buchanan and Jerry Mitchell, both longtime coaching veterans of CYO basketball, with maintaining that message.

Its more work to make it crooked -
July 14, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Carole Stemkowskis curiosity grew every time she drove by the strange wall of higgledy-piggledy blocks being erected in a cleared area along Highway 103 between Blockhouse and Bridgewater.
Intrigue compounded with each trip she made from her Liverpool home to work at the Chester Basin veterinary clinic.
At first, she thought it was going to be an extension to the storage facility behind the growing structure. But as the rows of bricks grew, the walls started to sag.
That is when she wondered if someones masonry work had gone terribly wrong.
Wooden boards were added. Like many, Stemkowski wondered if they were to stabilize the sagging walls.
A lot of people think its the work of a really bad contractor at first, chuckled Nicole Krebes.
It is crooked, the seams dont match up and there are massive gaps. It is coming along just the way Nicole and her husband, Bernd, planned it.
The Bridgewater couple is building a maze. When all is said and done in three to five years, the outer walls will look like they flow rather than sag, the dips filled in with plaster.
The outside wall will have beautiful ceramic and glass mosaics and a painted Canadiana scene that will include a 24-square-metre Maple Leaf jutting out.
Inside, fishing nets will hang from wires strung from one outer wall to another and adorned with 1,300 vines that Nicole is now growing at home.

Firefoxs tabs are normally an easy and convenient way to work online, neatly organising your open sites into separate, isolated views.
There may still be times when you need to view two or more tabs at the same time, though -- and thats whereTile Tabscan help, instantly organizing your chosen Firefox tabs into a single tiled window.
The extension is absolutely packed with commands, functions, options and settings, and it can seem intimidating at first. Fortunately its core features are straightforward enough. Open three or four tabs, click Tile > New Layout > All Tabs -- Horizontal, and youll see all your current tabs tiled one above the other.
This isnt just some static view of your tabs. Splitter bars enable you to resize your tiles as required. And each tile is effectively a separate browser, just as before, so you can click links and work as normal in one tile, while the others remain visible.
Alternatively, if these tiles are displaying related content, you might press F8 (or click Tile > Sync Scroll) to link them all together. Now scroll one tab and the others scroll, too: very convenient.
For this first example we've tiled all our tabs, which is quite drastic: every tab displays the tiled view. A simpler, less intrusive alternative would be to click Tile > Tile New Tab > Below. This splits your current tab into two tiles, with the current page at the top, your new tab page below, while all other tabs remain untouched.
Setting up the ideal tile layout can take a while, but your work can be saved for easy recall later. Tiles can be manipulated in various ways -- added, removed, collapsed, expanded -- and with 70-plus settings available, theres plenty of scope for configuringTile Tabsto suit your needs.
But if you dont want to go that far, just a simple layout change may be useful occasionally. And whatever you do is easily reversed: press F12, or click Tile > Close Layout (or Close All Layouts if you've been busy), your tiles are instantly closed, and every open tab is restored to its original state.

This tile sends four "vines" up the facade of a Moorish Revival building on 27th and Vliet Streets.
Published July 11, 2014 at 10:01 a.m.
Some streets in Milwaukee seem to specialize in different features, though it's often subtle and surely not even really true. It's just more the things that catch our eye on our daily commute.
That's what led me to begin to notice and appreciate the relatively fancy facades on industrial buildings along State Street.
And, lately, I've been noticing how many buildings on Vliet Street have facades featuring different kinds of tile work. Here are some of my favorites.
The Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory calls this gorgeous two-story storefront, "Probably the best preserved example in Milwaukee of the use of stock terra cotta tiles with Art Deco motifs to decorate a small store." Built in 1922, the structure long housed a furniture store and appears to be vacant at the moment. The cream-colored terra cotta is highly ornate, with yellow and rust-colored highlights, and "Wile Bldg." written is grey script. Alas, I have been unable to determine the architect responsible.
Martin Tullgren & Sons were the masters of glazed terra cotta in this town and you may recognize their buildings like the one 60th and North, the Downtown home of George Watts & Son and the Prospect Avenue building that was once home to the Avant Garde Coffee House and now houses Mystery One Bookstore and Allium restaurant, among others. But drive around town and you'll see that this eye catching cream colored tile, sometimes stark white, and often decorated with motifs like these, are everywhere. This example was built in 1923.
