Miracle Method Ends Year with Significant Work on College Campuses - January 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Colorado Springs, CO (PRWEB) December 31, 2014

A number of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing franchisees celebrated the holidays by doing work on over 20 college and university campuses across the country. Facility managers took advantage of Miracle Methods refinishing process to update tile floors and walls in residence hall bathrooms and academic buildings while students were away for the holiday break.

Facility managers have limited time over breaks, and our ability to repair and update tile, laminate, porcelain and cultured marble surfaces quickly and affordably is very appealing, says Don Dominick, Miracle Methods VP Commercial Accounts. Campus Facility Managers have learned about Miracle Method through exhibits at national facility manager conferences and word of mouth. About half of our new business on campuses comes from recommendations and referrals, adds Dominick.

Colleges and universities using Miracle Method over the holidays include The University of Alabama, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, New Mexico State, Augustana College, University of Texas, SUNY Fredonia, LSU, Illinois Wesleyan University, Wharton County Jr. College and others. Many of these same institutions also plan on Miracle Method being on campus doing work during their spring and summer breaks.

As an alternative to replacement, Miracle Methods process can save colleges up to 75% of the cost to remove, replace and regrout dated, damaged or leaking tile. According to Dominick, refinishing existing surfaces not only saves money but time. We can refinish the tile floors and walls in a community bathroom in as little as three days versus two weeks or more when demolition and replacement are involved.

With 135 offices across the country, Miracle Method is able to provide colleges and universities across the United States and Canada with affordable and durable surface refinishing solutions to maintain high quality living spaces for their students. Key to Windows mobe app sales? Er, LOW MEMORY, of course - December 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Microsoft is imploring developers to keep an eye on memory budgets when coding for the Windows Phone.

Downloads from the Windows and Windows Phone Store are dominated by version 8.1 (Windows), with 92 per cent of downloads using Metro the update of the new look operating system.

Of the Windows phone downloads, 8.1 again dominates by having a market share of 65 per cent, while 7.x accounts for less than 5 per cent.

This means there is still a relatively healthy market for 8.0 as use of 6.5, and earlier versions, will be restricted to custom applications. Lots of the devices youve signed when a delivery man has handed you a parcel will be running 6.5, and there is precious little apps market for those.

Indeed, Microsoft doesnt even list them.

What Microsoft hasnt revealed is the split between Windows and Windows Phone downloads. It has said the Windows market for 8.0 is in daisy push-up mode, so anyone with PC apps that only work on 8.0 should forget it. The vast majority will, however, work on 8.1 and its just that Microsoft is trying to hasten the migration.

Whats more important is that developers are aware of the devices for which users are buying software. Sales at the store are dominated by the entry level phones with the Lumia 520 and Lumia 530 leading the way.

Indeed more apps are downloaded for the 530 than for all the high-memory devices put together. Microsoft says with 71 per cent of downloads now coming from low-memory devices, you can more than double your potential market by optimising your app to run on such machines. If thats not possible, consider creating a version with lower memory requirements to offer alongside your primary apps".

Microsoft notes the need to do extensive testing, making sure that there is space for animations, any choosers and launchers an app may require, and that it is able to cope with a spike in memory requirements when the phone is rotated.

Microsoft gives good demographic information. India and the UK make up 12 per cent of the sales so you might want to hold off with your idea for a Cricket app. The UK does however lead the way in the market share per head of population.

Falling ceiling tile nearly hits shopper at New Bern Mall - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Christmas Eve, Diane Williams of Kinston was doing some last-minute shopping at New Bern Mall when a ceiling tile nearly hit her.

Hundreds of shoppers had more than likely walked under the same spot she walked under when a tile, saturated with rain, came within a foot of striking her on the head.

There were already buckets set up to catch rain, as the roof continually leaked on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Williams was not injured, nor were the children standing in line to catch a last glimpse of Santa for the season. The leaking water and saturated tile fell nearly 10 feet away from children, including a newborn infant, who was being held by his mother.

In a news release Friday by Coles Hull Doyle, marketing director of Hull Property Group of Augusta, Ga., which owns the facility, said We do our best to provide a first class shopping mall and we have a team dedicated to the facility upkeep of the property.

According to Doyle, a major overhaul of the roof is already in the works for the first quarter of next year.

This will include the repair of the skylights as well as replacing the roof, Doyle said. Due to the extensive nature of the work we had scheduled the work to begin after the holiday shopping season.

It did rain throughout the day on Wednesday, adding to the already damaged roof. However, rings of earlier water damage could be seen near the skylights and on other sections of the roof.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the presence of damp building materials, such as leaks in the roof, wet insulation within a ceiling or wall, or excessive moisture in the building foundation, can lead to the growth of mold, fungi and bacteria.

The CDC further states that research studies have shown that exposures to building dampness and mold have been associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, bronchitis, and various other health-related conditions.

Renovation Spat: Couple Win Appeal, S$67,000 in Damages - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: A couple have successfully appealed against a district judges decision ordering them to pay their neighbour for his work in building their dream home, with the High Court ruling instead that the man must pay them more than S$67,000 in damages for failing to complete certain rectification work.

The court battle started last year when retiree Edward Teo, 61 who was hired by the couple to transform their property in Sembawang into an English country-style house similar to his sued them for failing to pay him for the renovation work he had done.

In turn, the couple Air Force Lieutenant-Colonel Ng Boo Han, in his 40s, and his wife Madam Audrey-Ann Koo OiLian, in her 50s sued MrTeo for delivering shoddy work and failing to rectify defects, but they lost the suit.

The couple had earlier asked MrTeo to renovate their home after seeing his house. In January 2011, an agreement was signed stating that the renovation works would be completed by Aug 11 that year, within a budget of S$350,000, from which MrTeo could draw S$17,500 as wages.

Their relationship soured after the couple became dissatisfied with the renovation work and refused to pay MrTeo the remaining 20 per cent of the contract price.

MrTeo sued them for S$89,000 which he said was the money owed to him for his work and additional tasks. He said the renovation work was done to imitate the rustic concept of his own house, but that the rusticity was seen as defects by the couple, who demanded rectification.

In December last year, District Judge Loo NganChor awarded MrTeo S$47,000 in damages. The judge also commented that the couple had been flim-flamming (MrTeo) and squeezing him for more, and that they had been trying to extract their pound of flesh, when they were not even entitled to a jot of blood.

The couple, having unsuccessfully counterclaimed almost S$200,000 for rectification work, then appealed against Judge Loos decision.

In the High Court ruling, which was released yesterday, Judicial Commissioner Edmund Leow based his decision on reports by a surveyor, identified as MrLoggie in court documents, whom the couple had hired to give expert evidence on the defects to their property.

JC Leow granted claims for six of the 15 allegedly defective items listed in the appeal such as the use of a zinc roof, instead of a ceramic tile roof as listed in the contract; and the use of a 4mm-thick glass for the study room panel, which is considered too thin, unsafe and below industry standards.

Moving Out: Charter Oak Place - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Craig and Tanya Bell thought of themselves as big-house, backyard suburbanites until Craig accepted a work-related assignment in Germany.

Living in Dusseldorf introduced the couple to the advantages of public transportation and being able to walk to the neighborhood market or bakery. It was with that in mind that the Bells bought a Victorian townhouse on Charter Oak Place when they moved back to the United States in 2011 and settled in Hartford.

"We realized city living was the way to go," said Craig, 45, then a vice president of sales and marketing at Henkel Corp., the parent company of Loctite adhesives.

Built in 1880, the three-story Fenn-Eaton House is one of several historic brownstones on the quiet street, conceived by Samuel Colt as a residential enclave for mid-level managers at the Colt Armory. The neighborhood is perched on a hill just off Main Street and a few blocks southwest of Hartford Public Library and city hall. Once a duplex, but now subdivided into condominiums, the Bells' is the largest of the five units at just over 1,800, square-feet. The iconic blue dome of the armory can be seen from the home's third floor deck.

Craig credits Tanya, 51, with seeing the potential of the house and updating it in ways that preserve its classic features while giving it a more contemporary feel. Except for the hardwood floors, pretty much everything has been redone, he said, including a gut rehab of the kitchen and upgrades to the two full bathrooms. He and Tanya, an artist, did much of the work themselves, he said.

Craig describes his wife as a "stay-at-home renovator" and her artistic flourishes are everywhere. She did the tile work in the bathroom and most of the painting, he said.

The once-white walls are now soothing shades of green and blue and, in the living room, she used white paint and black trim to make the previously dark woodwork around the fireplace pop. A breezy mix of mid-century and older furnishings, bold fabrics and artwork brightens the otherwise stately rooms. Twelve-foot ceilings and minimal window treatments make them feel airy and big.

"It feels roomy indoors and there's a lot of space to live in because it's so open," Craig Bell said. "I like the classic woodwork. Those are the things that attracted us."

The sleek remodeled kitchen features a commercial gas range, cork floors and a new half bath. A closet in one of the renovated full bathrooms has been converted to a second floor laundry area. The improvements meld beautifully with the Victorian features of the home and even enhance them by setting them off. The grand foyer, with its massive double front doors and marble floor, looks much the same as it must have in Mark Twain's day. The brass door knobs and hardware is original, said listing agent John Balf Morgan, with Berkshire Hathaway Homes Services, as is a pair of hardwood pocket doors used to divide the living and dining rooms.

Craig said he and Tanya used the living room fireplace nightly in the colder months. And in the summer, they often pulled the dining room table onto the back deck for outdoor dinners with friends. The home is the ninth he and Tanya have owned in 22 years. Much of that time, they lived in Michigan.

Silco Theater receives challenge grant - December 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SILVER CITY >> The Silver City MainStreet Project has received an end-of-the-year donation challenge grant of a match of up to $3,000 for donations received before the end of the year. The challenge match grant was made by an anonymous donor. MainStreet Project still needs $100,000 to complete work on the Silco Theater.

Silver City MainStreet is trying to raise $500,000 to fully restore and renovate the historical theater which dates back to 1923. Once the renovation work is complete, MainStreet plans to lease out the building to a movie theater operator and they are expecting that first-run movies will likely be shown at the downtown movie house. The theater will seat 175 people when the renovation work is done.

So far, the exterior facade renovations have been completed.

The external renovations include the installation of new parapet flashing. Contractors restored the plaster detail on the exterior of the second floor. Workers also renovated and painted the second floor windows.

On the first-floor faade, workers reconstructed the transom windows, replaced the tile work below the windows and applied stucco and paint.

Workers also reconfigured the existing theater exterior entry vestibule to more closely match the original historic entry vestibule plan. Construction included removing some existing vestibule walls and replacing them with a new entry and side walls.

Workers have also completed work on the rear of the building. Construction on the rear side of the building includes a new exterior concrete staircase to provide access. Part of that work involved removing an existing concrete ramp. Workers also installed new downspouts at the rear of the building. Additional construction work at the west side of the building involved closing a door opening with brick that was not part of the original theater design.

Work still needed to be done:

New electrical and heat and air conditioning mechanical services.

A new partition layout to provide spaces for one new restroom, janitor closet, storage, and interior theater vestibule.
