Bitcoin and home-baked bread at Charlevoix B&B - March 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Gte TerreCiel in Baie-St-Paul, Charlevoix, is as revolutionary as a B&B can be in 2014, and it is also as homespun as any guest house of 1914. (TerreCiel is one word because it is a play on the synergy of Earth-sky and yin-yang.)

The revolution begins with the fact that TerreCiel is one of the few lodging establishments in North America that accepts payment in bitcoin, the new digital currency.

Why add this option in addition to good, hard cash and reliable credit cards? I asked the B&Bs owner, David Mancini, who is a 30-year-old former computer programmer.

I think its the future of currency, he explained. And bitcoin is better than credit cards because there are no transaction fees, in most cases.

For my guests from other countries, it will mean convenience and savings. They can eliminate paying charges on currency exchanges and travellers cheques and they dont have to carry cash.

TerreCiel hasnt had any bitcoin clients yet, possibly because most of the world is still trying to figure out how to use it. You can buy bitcoins at an ATM on St-Laurent Blvd. in Montreal or at such Web sources as http://www.localbitcoins.com or http://www.cointrader.net.

You create an online wallet on your computer or cellphone (but not an iPhone), and once you have deposited bitcoins (similar to filling a PayPal account with dollars), you do an e-transfer to Mancinis wallet. If your B&B room costs about $100, and one bitcoin equals $700 Canadian (a recent exchange rate), you would pay about 15 per cent of a bitcoin. The value fluctuates wildly, but it has increased overall at about five-fold during the past six months.

TerreCiel operates on another revolutionary fiscal principle. The B&B has a price list for its accommodations during the high season, from June through October.

The rest of the year, people pay what they want, Mancini said, but only if they book through our website, which 95 per cent of our clients do. If they come to us any other way, by phone or through Booking.com or Hotels.com, they pay the list price.

It is a little crazy, but it works. Most people voluntarily pay a fair market price.

Winds topple sunroom roof near Troy - February 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A woman living on North Sayers Road near Troy walked outside after severe storms moved through the area to find significant damage to much of her property.

Leanna Purkeypile discovered significant damage to the sun room area of her home in the 0-100 block of North Sayers around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

"They said we were having the tornado warning and then about ten after 11 the wind picked up really hard," Purkeypile said. "I went to the bathroom and stayed in there," she added.

"It didn't sound like a train, but it sounded terrible."

The roof of Purkeypile's sun room was ripped off and thrown over her house, landing in her front yard.

In addition to the sun room damage, she said her home had a two to three foot portion of her roof ripped off and some siding damage.

"The one thing I did think was I'm OK," Purkeypile said.

A trampoline was thrown into Purkeypile's yard from what she estimated to be from four or five houses away.

Purkeypile said she expects to contact her insurance company in the morning to see what the cost of the damage will be.

Make it count: When it comes to home improvement, simple upgrades can pay off - February 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pop quiz: Whats the home-improvement project that comes closest to paying for itself when you sell?

Not a snazzy new kitchen or bathroom. A lowly steel front door.

So says Remodeling magazine in its annual survey breaking down the cost benefits of spiffing up your home. Nationally, the survey says, replacing your door costs an average of $1,137 and has a resale value of $978.

Thats the entrance of the home, said Dave MacLean, director of sales at Brothers Services Co., a Hampstead, Md.-based remodeling firm. Thats the absolute first impression.

A steel door, if Remodeling magazine is right, will recoup 86 percent of its cost at sale. The survey suggests that beats the heck out of a major kitchen renovation (69 percent) or a bathroom remodel (65 percent).

The takeaway is to think on a smaller scale at least if your priority is resale.

Costs for the surveys five most valuable projects range from the $1,137 door to a minor kitchen improvement of about $18,500 (new cabinet fronts and hardware, plus replacement countertops and the like). For the bottom five, costs start at $11,400 for a backup power generator and top out at nearly $73,000 for a sunroom addition.

The survey relied on appraisers and real estate agents about 3,900 nationally for its resale estimates. But appraisers warn that home improvement is not an exact science. It depends on the property, the neighborhood and what buyers expect.

At a certain point say, a property with a bathroom and kitchen predating the Eisenhower administration you might need to do major updates just to get anyone in the door to look. And market expectations vary a lot by neighborhood.

In affluent areas, You need to know your competition, said Sharon L. Cremen, an appraisal and consultant. If they all have these great gourmet kitchens, you need to have a gourmet kitchen if youre putting your house on the market. Or you need to be extremely realistic about how much the property is going to sell for.

How to design the perfect conservatory - February 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

You want to end up with a well-proportioned conservatory that is fit for purpose. Inevitably, this means sacrificing part of your garden, but hold tight to your goal of creating a structure that, through good design, provides an effortless link between inside and out.

A conservatory will reduce your gardens footprint, says Brendan Day, head of design at Apropos, who has been building glass structures for 50 years. But dont forget that with glass theres a lot of growing to be had. A conservatory could meet your planting needs just as well, if not better, than your garden space.

Choose furniture, size of planting beds and accessories (eg staging, large containers) at the design stage. These dimensions will determine the final proportions and internal floor layout and help to ensure that the best views are incorporated and that the natural light will be a plus, not a hindrance.

As for architecture, the obvious choice is to echo the style of your home. Yet contemporary conservatories alongside period homes are increasingly popular, often making minimal impact. Indeed, for this reason English Heritage often recommends contemporary glass structures for listed buildings.

    3 Aspect

A south-facing aspect may seem the obvious choice to ensure year-round sun, but the suns rays become magnified and can burn through glass. Also, air becomes hot and dry, an environment that no plant (or person) enjoys, and which also encourages pests and disease. Blinds will be an essential addition.

Some of the nicest buildings Ive experienced, in terms of lovely, breathable atmosphere and comfortable sociable space, are on the north sides of peoples homes, advises Lisa Rawley, of conservatory plant specialist Fleur de Lys.

    4 Glazing

A conservatory relies on its glass to operate to capacity. Solar-controlled glass can help minimise the temperature of the room and control glare. In a north-facing conservatory, low-emissivity (lowE) glass will reduce heat loss.

Architecturally speaking, lanterns and coloured glass can create interest, but Nick Bashford, a director of glasshouse and conservatory specialist Alitex, advises against fussy effects or, for example, replicating the details of your propertys windows.

Receive News, Politics, and Entertainment Headlines Each Morning.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular vacation spots for Pittsburghers.

If youre thinking of taking your family there this summer, you may want to begin planning now to get the best deals.

We see tons of folks from Pittsburgh down here, said Susan Phillips, from VisitMyrtleBeach.com, as she sat with KDKAs David Highfield on a sun-soaked beach.

Getting There When it comes to getting to Myrtle Beach, its a nine-and-a-half hour drive.

But if you want to fly, check out what we found for a random week we picked in July.

There are no non-stop flights from Pittsburgh International to Myrtle Beach. However, you can fly US Airways for $366 a person or fly Delta for $368.

But youll save money by flying out of Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe. Spirit Airlines does offer a direct flight during the summer, and the cost is $263, roughly a hundred dollars less. Plus, parking at the airport in Latrobe is free.

Where to Stay There are numerous hotels along the beach, and some of them offer deals if you book early.
