Dubbed Addition by Subtraction, the award-winning project was a sensitive reduction to a charming 1920s Bungalow home in Plymouth, Mich., where the homes square footage was actually reduced by 43 square feet.
In a Not So Big inspired design approach, the original homes 1,876 square feet was right-sized to 1,833 square feet by removing an unfortunate sunroom aberration addition tacked on to the home in the mid-1970s. In addition to that correction, the design solution also significantly improved the homes layout, completely reconfiguring the main living areas of the home including the kitchen, dining area, family gathering space, daily entry, and stairway to the basement. The redesign also introduced a new cozy, private rear sitting porch. All was conceived from an historically sensitive fashion seamlessly integrating the homes Bungalow style into new, updated, contemporary functionality. In the words of the homeowners, Architectural Resource put everything back the way it was meant to be, only better.
Architectural Resource was again recognized in our Annual Issue on HOUSES with our Best Traditional Home award in 2014," said Brian Pontolilo, editor, Fine Homebuilding Magazine. "Just like I remembered from the first Architectural Resource project I covered, this house is remarkably sensitive to all of the important things: the homes heritage, the homeowners and the way we live today, and the great responsibility of balancing preservation with modern practices for durability, energy-efficiency and healthy living. Michael Klement and Architectural Resource excel in these areas. Every architectural style has its hallmark materials. One of the things that Michael does so well is integrate todays modern materials into historically sensitive projects. In this Arts-and-Crafts home, the predominant material is the wood used for all of the wonderful built-ins, trim, and wainscot; but the accents are no less important. From the double-hung windows to the custom pendant lights, Architectural Resource got it right again.

HOMES: 13 Scenic Point, Greenbrier -
June 28, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Would you like to move into a brand-new home with some land included? If so, gather up the family and visit this home in the Greenbrier Heights subdivision.
Offered for sale through Rowlett Realty of Greenbrier, this one-story home at 13 Scenic Point was completed on May 1, 2014, and is on the subdivisions last lot overlooking the city. The lot is sloped with a beautiful view of the hills in northern Faulkner County.
Great care was taken to use quality materials and modern design techniques throughout the homes 3,100 square feet. In addition to four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths, the home features hardwood and ceramic tile floors, 10- and 12-foot ceilings and a lot of custom crown molding with pretty corner blocks. Plus, there is a bonus sunroom with a gorgeous view and a unique see-through fireplace.
Neutral colors have been used throughout the home to give the first owners a wonderful palette for personalized decorating. The use of splashes of color here and there will make this place feel like home in no time! The main living spaces have an open floor plan, with columns used strategically to create the feeling of separate rooms. All of this ties together to create a feeling of elegance with a nod to comfort.
In the kitchen, the designers installed custom wood cabinets, top-grade granite countertops and custom lighting. The design is open and easily allows the cook to also see whats happening in the family room (parents particularly like this feature!) Stainless appliances including a double oven, microwave, dishwasher and disposal are included. One of the best kitchen features is a nice walk-in pantry for extra storage. Dining options are abundant, with an eat-in area in the kitchen, a formal dining room and a breakfast bar.
The master bedroom features a huge walk-in closet and the master bath has a walk-in shower. All wet areas are tiled, and the top-grade granite countertops are also used in all the bathrooms.
Other features in this home include:
Three-car garage.
Floored attic.
Deck in backyard.

Clubbing at the Ritz in Toronto -
June 15, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
The Toronto Ritz-Carlton opened three years ago across from Roy Thomson Hall, and soon began racking up awards for its five-star, five-diamond AAA/CAA service.
Once I got a look at the spa, my corner suite and the Club lounge on the 20th floor, I started to think I had made too many plans that involved leaving the premises.
The Club level of accommodation is the Ritzs hotel within a hotel, an upgrade with the biggest perk being access to the lounge, where complimentary food is on offer all day. Which means theres a rotating selection of upscale nibblies and kid-friendly snacks laid out from early till late.
It starts with a breakfast buffet, which morphs into lunchtime sandwiches and salads, which progresses to snacks, then hors doeuvres and cocktails, and finally, at 8 p.m., desserts and cordials.
The Club bar is open all day, fully stocked with premium liquor, and the space is like a comfortable living room, with a nook for board games, a TV corner and a computer with printer.
Solo business travellers were there to grab a bite without the chore of eating out alone. Families passed through. For both kinds of travellers, the appeal is simple: A good bite on the go makes life that much easier no matter who you are and why youre in Toronto.
The Club lounge has a dazzling view of Lake Ontario and the CN Tower, which I admired over a glass of wine and bocconcini and cherry tomatoes shortly after check-in. Perfectly shaped macarons, carefully stacked in jars, were some of the best I have tasted.
My three nieces, who were the reason for my Toronto visit, loved the lounge most of all for its unlimited sugar rush: jars packed with chocolate bars, plates of cookies, a hot-chocolate machine, and a chocolate fondue.
They would have sprinted from one to the other had I not given them my stink eye and laid down the cardinal rule: Walk. Do. Not. Run.
A little boy having lunch a few tables away with his parents said it best: This is the life.

The Benefits of a Home Addition -
June 12, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
By Scott Murfey
Is your home almost perfect? Maybe it was perfect when you bought it, but its getting a little cramped since you got roped in by that infomercial and now own a home gym set. Or maybe your son or daughter unexpectedly moved back in with you after graduating from college, so you dont get to turn their bedroom into that coveted wine cellar after all. Of course, you could move, but do you really feel like packing, hiring movers and reorganizing everything? Maybe a home addition is the answer. Generally, a less expensive option than moving, home additions offer many benefits:
More space for stuff: Our homes never end up having enough space. After living somewhere for a while, its natural that we accumulate more photo albums, more appliances, and more electronics. But its not just that we accumulate more stuff; our lifestyles change. Sometimes our home becomes our office, or we develop new hobbies and require an art studio or a music room.
More space for family: Increasingly, our kids and our parents are moving back in with us. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, almost 40% of young adults live at home with their parents, and according to another study, 4.6 million elders moved in with their kids. You might not have planned for this when you bought your place. However, instead of uprooting completely or feeling cramped, you can look into adding an extra bedroom, and if the plumbing allows, it can include a bathroom.
More sunlight: Generally less expensive than other home additions, a sunroom has many benefits. Natural light is so important. Studies show that it improves our mood, it promotes healing, makes us smarter (a study showed that test scores were higher among students when their classes were illuminated by natural light) and makes us more productive (a study found programmers in offices with natural light spent more time at their computers than those in offices without windows). Sunrooms can also add natural light to surrounding rooms.
More luxury: If youre at that point in your life when you feel like you deserve a little more luxury, why not build that walk-in closet that youve always dreamed of or that luxury bathroom with the giant, gorgeous shower and his and her sinks?
If you are considering a home addition, its important to remember that a home addition that isnt designed and planned well can look awkward. It might not match the style or shape of the existing house. Its also important to make sure that all home additions adhere to San Diego building codes. If they dont, you will have to pay fines, and you may have to return the home to its original state.
At Murfey Construction, we are well-versed in great design principles and San Diego building codes and regulations. If you are considering a home addition, please visit us at http://MurfeyConstruction.com.

Increase your homes resale value
Adorn Home Improvements 1634 Charles Street Whitby, ON L1N 1B9 905-665-1506
Youve been living in your house for a few years now; over time, you have made a few changes, improvements to make your home feel just right for you and your family. Perhaps you have updated and modernized your kitchen or replaced the roof?
Maybe you have finally just about paid off your mortgage and are ready to make the next big move. No, not literally, but the time has come to expand your home.
One of the easier ways of accomplishing this can be to consider adding a sunroom. Sunrooms add livable space; consequently increasing square footage and therefore resale value.
Time to connect with Adorn Home Improvements, experts in exterior home renovations within Durham Region. One call and before you know it, Isabel Mendicino of Adorn Home Improvements, will have an experienced and professional representative sitting down with you to review and firm up your dreams for that home addition.
Four-season sunrooms are so named because they are sunrooms that can be used year-round. They have thicker, better insulated glass, and can also be heated and cooled by your home's furnace and air conditioner. Yes, there are less expensive options, such as a three-season sunroom. However with this, you almost immediately restrict the use of this space. In our colder climate, the four-season structure likely makes more sense short and long term.
Any addition will probably add value to your home but a well-designed four seasons sunroom built with top-quality workmanship and materials by a company with a well-deserved reputation may add additional cache.
The experts at Adorn Home Improvements will conduct a thorough needs analysis for you and present options for your consideration. And, if you are working to a specific budget, Adorn can even assist you with competitive financing rates.
Located 1634 Charles Street in Whitby, consider Adorn Home Improvements as a trusted solution provider for all your home renovations and additions. Call 1 (800) 660-9565 and let us help you make the right decisions for your homes improvements.
