Fire sprinkler group calls for Mitchell retrofit - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

RACINE A nonprofit fire sprinkler group Tuesday called on the Racine Unified School Board to retrofit Mitchell Elementary School with a complete fire sprinkler system following last weeks fire.

The school, at 2713 Drexel Ave., does not have sprinklers because construction codes do not require it, according to Unified Buildings and Grounds Director Bryan Arnold.

Dan Gengler, a retired fire official who represents the Wisconsin chapter of the National Fire Sprinkler Association, said fire sprinklers should be the top priority in the renovation of the school following the fire.

Now is the time to retrofit a complete fire sprinkler system, as it will save money during this stage of renovation, Gengler said. The School Board should make sure the entire building is safe, with equal fire protection for all occupants.

Arnold said Unified can certainly consider fire sprinklers but right now its way too early to talk about. ... Were still trying to mitigate (damage) and get everything up and running.

City-County Building Getting Sprinkler System - March 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The City-County Building in downtown Wheeling does not have a sprinkler system, but work to install one should begin in late spring or summer, according to Ohio County Administrator Greg Stewart.

Ohio County has received a grant for $100,000 through the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Grant Program to place a sprinkler system in the building, and the projected cost to begin installation on the upper floors is $193,195, Stewart said.

He said the project should go out to bid by the end of this month, and bids received would be opened in April. Stewart then expects work to begin in late May or June, and for contractors to be on the job 30 days.

The City-County Building was constructed beginning in 1958, when building codes did not require sprinkler systems in public facilities.

An upgrade to meet current requirements only is mandated if the building were to change ownership.

"But it only makes sense to do this," Stewart said. "Sprinkling is an aid to saving lives during a fire.

The City-County Building is comprised of block walls, which does make it "fairly fireproof," Stewart said. "If there were to be a fire, it wouldn't spread fast," Stewart said.

In addition to placing a sprinkler system, county officials also are seeking to upgrade the building's fire alarm system and to place additional smoke heads within offices.

Fire alarm improvements are necessary as the alarms are first to alert those in a building there is a fire, according to Stewart. The sprinklers go off later when they sense heat near them.

Work to install sprinklers will begin on the fifth floor, then move progressively down to the fourth and third floors.

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- A West Valley business was saved by its sprinkler system after the building caught fire early Sunday morning.

Fire crews from several cities responded the fire at Party Rental near Thunderbird and El Mirage roads.

Firefighters saw smoke coming from the building but the fire had mostly been extinguished by the sprinklers when they arrived on scene.

"These people will be able to occupy their business Monday morning," El Mirage Fire Chief Howard Munding said. "If there was a fire without a sprinkler, these people would be out of business."

A burning candle was identified as the cause of the fire.

Provincial task force will examine sprinkler retrofits - March 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION

    Posted: 03/1/2014 1:00 AM | Comments:

The Selinger government will look at sprinkler retrofits in personal care homes and create a task force to see if further improvements need to be made in other health-care facilities across the province.

The province also said Friday it is dedicating up to $7 million annually for sprinkler and fire-safety upgrades in health-care facilities. In addition, a fire-safety fund will be created to set aside $2 million to support additional standards and safety reviews.

The province's announcement comes after a Jan. 23 fire at a nursing home in L'Isle-Verte, Que., that killed at least 27 people. Five more people are still considered missing.

The province said the fire-safety task force will review fire safety in facilities that care for vulnerable people, including retirement homes, assisted living and supportive housing, hospitals and group homes. It will be chaired by staff from the Office of the Fire Commissioner and include representatives from the Manitoba Building Standards Board, the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs, front-line fire services, regional health authorities and several provincial departments. Input will also be sought from the Long Term and Continuing Care Association of Manitoba, local certified sprinkler system installers, municipal governments and others.

The task force will also look at a range of fire- and life-safety activities including fire protection and early warning systems, code enforcement and inspections, education and prevention, and emergency and fire planning. Recommendations from the task force are expected this fall.

Health-care facilities in Manitoba, including personal care homes, were built to the building standards in place when they were constructed. In 1998, the building code changed, requiring new building construction or renovation projects to have sprinkler systems. All personal care homes constructed or renovated since 1998 have full sprinkler systems.

Media reports say more than half of the licensed personal care homes in Manitoba do not have full sprinkler systems installed.
