April 9, 2014 Man sentenced for destroying jail sprinkler

    Anonymous The Union-Recorder The Union-Recorder Wed Apr 09, 2014, 03:37 PM EDT

MILLEDGEVILLE Destroying a prison system sprinkler while in solitary confinement gave Adam Tory Hill five more years to serve Tuesday.

Hill was indicted last fall by a Baldwin County grand jury for burglary in the first degree, felony theft by receiving stolen property, possession of firearm by a convicted felon and interference with government property.

Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Leonard Myers prosecuted Hill on the interference charge and asked for the maximum legal sentence.

Myers said Superior Court Judge Hugh Wingfield gave him almost everything he asked for.

Tuesdays sentence is consecutive to the two years Hill was already serving.

(Hill) could parole, but he did receive five years confinement, Myers said.

Hill was accused of breaking into a local firefighters Milledgeville home and stealing more than 20 assault and tactical weapon type firearms.

So (Hill) is a three-time felon at that point, Myers said. He then turns around while hes in the jail and damages the sprinkler system in an isolation cell. He attempted to grab the sprinkler head, and when he did, it triggered the fire alarm, dumped water into his cell and they had to shut the entire system off leaving half of the building without fire protection.

Tips for Turning on Your Sprinkler System - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sprinkler systems all around the Truckee Meadows are coming out of hibernation following a long, cold winter. Local lawn services are scrambling to turn on sprinkler systems now that the weather has warmed up. Scott Leonard of Signature Landscapes says his crews are responding to calls from customers who are ready to start watering. "The weather changed from last week and freezing temperatures to near 80 degrees right now. It's about getting water on as fast as we can," said Leonard.

Sometimes the long winters can cause leaks, which eventually show up on your water bill. Leonard said the first thing to do is look for problems above ground. "If you're going to turn it on yourself, go through each zone. Walk your property, make sure there are no drip breaks, check your sprinklers, look for clogged valves," he said.

Another important tip is to check your water meter to make sure your system isn't leaking. "Inside the water pit is your gauge," said Leonard. "There's a small red wheel, if it's turning there's a leak," he added.

"So you want all your household water off, come out and check it. If everything's off and it's spinning, then it's time to call somebody to come out and investigate for a leak," Leonard explained.

Andy Gebhardt of the Truckee Meadows Water Authority says you can also check your water bill. "If your bill is higher than you think it should be, you might want to take a good look and see if something's going on," he said.

Once the sprinklers are on and working properly, it's important not to over water. Experts say right now about 5 minutes three times a day on your assigned watering days should do the trick. "Start it up slowly, give it a little drink. But you don't want to flood it early. It'll thrive," said Gebhardt.

The Truckee Meadows Water Authority is holding a free a workshop on Wednesday, April 9th at 5:30 to explain how to turn on your irrigation system. The address is 1355 Capital Blvd. in Reno.

HOUSTON A hotel sustained only minor fire damages early Monday thanks to a working sprinkler system on the property.

According to the Houston Fire Department, a small fire started in a third-floor room of the In Town Suites on Branch Forest at Highway 6 around 2:30 a.m. A maintenance worker who occupied the room rushed out when the fire started and asked bystanders to call 911.

By the time HFD arrived to the scene, the fire had already been extinguished by the sprinkler system inside the room.

The room sustained minor smoke and fire damage, and two rooms below that room also sustained water damages from the sprinklers.

There was no word on what started the fire.

Sprinkler system being designed for courthouse - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

UNION Design work on a courthouse sprinkler system that will largely be financed through a state grant is now under way in Monroe County.

County commissioners unanimously approved signing a contract with The Thrasher Group during a Wednesday meeting. The $16,000 agreement calls for Thrasher to draw up the plans for the project, oversee the bidding process, provide site visits by architects and perform at least two inspections one to check the contractors work for substantial completion and then a final inspection when all work is done.

Thrasher representative Bob Hazelwood advised the commission the plans should be ready within a matter of days. Affiliated with Pentree Inc., a consulting engineering firm that is part of The Thrasher Group, Hazelwood has worked with the county on other projects.

The sprinkler system will serve all three floors of the circa 1881 courthouse in Union, according to County Clerk Donald Evans, who is responsible for the countys grant applications.

The bulk of the project will be paid for through a $100,000 Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority grant from the state, with another $20,000 in matching funds coming from local coffers.

    In other business:

    - On behalf of the countys Solid Waste Authority, Bill Shiflet appealed to the commission to contribute $10,000 toward the construction of a new building to house the SWAs recycling operations.

He said the agency hopes to be able to expand the recycling program and include the school system in the effort to cut back on the amount of paper now being disposed in the landfill. He said that would help reduce the schools trash expenses, while also helping the environment.

    - The commission received word that its 2014-15 budget has received conditional approval from the state.

At just over $2.8 million, next years budget is only around $50,000 more than the current years, Evans said, noting the new budget includes 2 percent across-the-board pay raises for county employees.

Sprinkler systems urged after Kilbirnie fire - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are calls for a law change to make sprinkler systems compulsory at storage facilities. The Government agrees it is an issue that needs to be looked into.

But any changes will be too little too late for those who had their most valuable possessions destroyed by fire in Wellington yesterday.

Some of Tania Buck's dearest possessions, including books from her childhood, now lie in a burnt-out and sodden pile. She says seeing the remnants has made it hit home for her.

She thought her things would be safe in locked-up storage and says more should have been done to fire-proof the building, which does not have a sprinkler system.

"I think it should be law that they have sprinkler systems, especially in buildings like this," says Ms Buck.

It took fire crews roughly 24 hours to fully douse the fire that ripped through the Kiwi Self Storage facility in Kilbirnie yesterday.

Today fire investigators and police were at the scene. They still do not know what started the fire or whether it was suspicious, but say it is possible a sprinkler system may have helped contain it.

"What this issue raises and what I want to discuss with the fire service is the feasibility of now requiring all commercial buildings to have sprinklers," says Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne. "Certainly when a loss like this occurs you do wonder."

The Australasian Self Storage Association says it is happy for that conversation to take place but warns sprinklers are not necessarily a silver bullet.

"If you have water it can destroy a lot of people's possessions without actually containing the fire," says the Australasian Self Storage Board's Keith Edwards.

Precious items destroyed in blaze - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOM HUNT, ANDREA O'NEIL AND TALIA SHADWELL

Customers of a Kilbirnie self-storage building destroyed by fire have been shocked to discover it had no sprinkler system.

Heirlooms, Oscars and thousands of a DJ's precious vinyl records have all gone up in smoke in a fire that burned throughout the day at Kiwi Self Storage in Rongotai Rd, near Wellington Airport. Fire Service assistant area commander Paul Smith confirmed the building had no sprinklers.

If it had had them, the fire would have been contained to where it started, he said.

But there was no legal requirement for the building to have sprinklers.

Lord of the Rings cinematographer Alex Funke had two Oscars, as well as "some Baftas", in a unit at the heart of the blaze, which began about 12.45am.

He was not notified until 8.40am, and rushed down to the scene. "It's very upsetting," he said. "You put stuff in storage . . . you think it's safe."

Funke was not aware the building had no sprinklers when he put his items in storage.

He also understood the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences could probably replace the Oscar statuettes - but many customers have lost precious personal items that can never be replaced.

Radio Active DJ Brenden Robertson has lost about $60,000 worth of vinyl records and musical instruments; the Shanahan family has lost priceless photographs of Wellington's history taken by New Zealand Symphony Orchestra trombonist Thomas Shanahan; and many others have lost family treasures.
