CHESAPEAKE -- A kitchen fire in the Heron's Land Apartments left 58 people displaced Tuesday night.
Firefighters responded to the call in the 2100 block of South Military Highway around 10:15 p.m., according to Captain Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department.
The fire had been extinguished by the building's fire sprinkler system before crews arrived on scene, but caused water damage to apartments on the first and second floors. As a result, electrical power had be shut off.
One occupant of the building suffered smoke inhalation, but refused to be transported, Saunders said. Nobody else was injured.
Heron's Land Apartments is part of the Virginia Supportive Housing program and residents are former homeless single adults. Officials say 58 of the 60 units were damaged.
Esther Robert is the director at Heron's Landing Apartments and all other Virginia Supportive Housing developments in Hampton Roads.

Sprinkler system to boost tower safety
4:00pm Tuesday 8th July 2014 in News By Damian Fantato, Council Reporter, also covering Oxford city centre. Call me on 01865 425429
TENANTS safety in Oxford tower blocks is being given a boost with the introduction of a new sprinkler system.
The improvement will be included in the 18m redevelopment of the city council blocks, following a request from the countys fire brigade.
The council agreed on Thursday to spend an extra 1.74m on its plans to redevelop the five towers.
Balconies are also to be enclosed and more parking provided following requests by residents during the consultation process.
City councillor Scott Seamons said: The fire service came to us and said we should put sprinklers in, and the rest of the changes reflect what came out of the consultation.
Residents said they wanted the balconies to be enclosed. We are doing this job once, so we want to do it properly and make it as good as it can be.
As well as the new sprinkler system and the enclosed balconies, the extra money will also pay for landscaping and more parking.
Assistant chief fire officer Simon Furlong said: We have been working in partnership with the city council to ensure that the tower block are refurbished to provide a safe living and working environment.

The smart choice: opportunity from uncertainty

It's a tip of the hat today to Reg reader Joshua Thumim for putting the humble Raspberry Pi into the service of humanity with a simple but effective feline repellent system.
Joshua explained:
For the last few years, pretty much every time I (or my two small kids) wanted to use the garden I'd first have to remove 3-5 cat turds of varying stages of decomposition.
I probably don't need to explain how disgusting that is, or how irritating to know that these cats belonged to my neighbours who had nice turd-free gardens thanks to being cat owners. It was a question of beat them or join them, and I was damned if i was going to join them.
I did try several alternatives first, but nothing really worked, and eventually my patience ran out. Think Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
Well, the Brit Michael Douglas hit the shed with the following kit:
He explained: "The solenoid is switched via the PiFace relay in response to a PIR signal, controlled via about 40 lines of pretty amateurish Python, the main feature being use of the PiCam Python library which has a circular stream buffer feature for the video, allowing capture of pre-event footage."
Splendid. Here's a slow motion replay, the better to enjoy the "Cat-O-Bolt" in action:

PIERCE COUNTY A bored inmate at the Fife Jail tried to cure his boredom by fiddling with a jail sprinkler system, causing the system to activate and flood multiple cells, the Pierce County Prosecutors Office said.
Jason Pierce, 25, is now charged with first-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly activated a fire suppression sprinkler inside his jail cell on July 1.
According to the Pierce County Prosecutor, Pierce was on the top bunk of a bed in his cell when he grew bored. Looking to occupy himself, Pierce reached up and played with one of the fire represses sprinklers above his head.
Video footage allegedly shows he reached upwards multiple times until the sprinkler released. The sprinkler flooded four cells at the jail, and completely soaked multiple mattresses. The jail didnt function normally for at least 45 minutes as guards cleaned up the mess, prosecutors said.
Pierce allegedly told police he didnt know the sprinkler would activate, and it started to leak before it exploded.
It was unknown why Pierce was in jail to begin with.
He pleaded not guilty to the mischief charges and is being held in jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
