Nation's air travel system slowly recovering after disruption - September 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Last Updated Sep 27, 2014 9:04 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- The nation's air travel system slowly began to recover Saturday after an alleged act of employee sabotage at a large regional air traffic control center brought Chicago's two international airports to a halt.

At the height of the travel misery Friday, more than 2,000 flights in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports had been canceled, sending waves of travel disruption rippling across the country.

Ben Mutzabaugh, editor at USA Today, joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday" to discuss how the alleged arson fire at an air traffic control center is...

Authorities say a contract employee started a fire Friday morning in the basement telecommunications room of a control center in the Chicago suburb of Aurora and then attempted to commit suicide by slashing his throat. Brian Howard, 36, of Naperville, was charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, a felony. The FBI said Howard remains hospitalized and no court date has been scheduled.

As of late Saturday afternoon, total Chicago flight cancelations for the day stood at more than 780 - still a damagingly high number, but an improvement. Southwest Airlines, the dominant carrier at Midway, had hoped to resume a full flight schedule Saturday, but had to cancel all flights between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CDT.

Lines remained long at O'Hare, which is a major U.S. hub. Many travelers stranded overnight slept on cots provided by the airport, in scenes reminiscent of winter storm disruptions.

The Federal Aviation Administration facility in Aurora, about 40 miles west of downtown Chicago, handles planes cruising at high altitudes through the air space as well as those just beginning to approach or completing a departure from airports in the Chicago area. It remained shut down Saturday, and its responsibilities have been transferred to centers in Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis. The FAA's command center in Warrenton, Virginia, was also working to increase the traffic flow.

Illinois Veterans Home will receive safety improvements - September 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

QUINCY, ILL. -- The Illinois Veteran's Home at Quincy was established in the 1800s and has grown considerably in the past century.

Today, the veteran's home has 25 buildings sitting on 210 acres inQuincy.

But as time has passed many things have changed ...for example safety standards.

"They were in compliance with the codes at the time they were built and codes have changed over time and we've sort of gotten away from it," Gwen Diehl, the Veterans Home Coordinator for the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, said.

The new sprinkler system will be added to areas like the multi-purpose area, chapel, attics, food services freezers and also outdoor porches.

The sprinkler system is one of many projects that have already taken place and will continue to take place over the next year.

"We completed the renovation of the power plant and its been a very long project so about a year and a half ago, you may have seen the chimney being reconstructed," Diehl said.

The Veterans Home owns and maintains its power plant.

The upgrades will allow the home to remain independent and free of outside help and insure it will continue to stay around for future veterans.

The sprinkler system safety improvement will take 290 consecutive days to complete with an end date on May 9, 2015.

Apartments damaged by fire had no sprinklers - September 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAS VEGAS -- There are new details about the building that caught on fire Wednesday afternoon and why the fire spread so fast.

The apartment complex did not have a sprinkler system and it is not required to have one because it was built in the 1970s.

The Americana Apartments were last inspected in 2011 and Clark County found violations. So, a new alarm system was installed, but no sprinklers.

During Wednesday's fire, people had just seconds to escape fast-moving flames.

"We saw the roof collapsing. It was really bad," complex resident Brian Tippett said.

Many who lived in the apartments lost everything.

One day later, people like Kevin Ho are rallying to help. He said many people who lived here couldn't afford to live anywhere else.

"A lot of them were devastated by what happened in the fire. All they have basically is what is on their back," Ho said.

8 News NOW has learned Americana Apartments never had to have sprinklers installed.

"These are not high-rises. The ones we are talking about are only two stories, the Director of Clark County Building and Fire Ron Lynn said.

'Smart' sprinkler system may save money, developer says

    By Bill Gephardt

    September 24th, 2014 @ 8:56am

SALT LAKE CITY A smart sprinkler system developed in Utah not only turns itself on and off when it rains, but also keeps an eye on the weather forecast.

Other devices sense rain and keep sprinklers from turning on, but the Skydrop program actually hooks into a Wi-Fi system to keep lawns green and healthy.

Essentially, I didnt know how to water my own lawn, said Clark Endrizzi and he is far from being the only one.

The Utah Division of Water Resources says the typical Utah household uses twice as much water on their yards as is necessary.

Some landscapers were telling me to water every day and just do less watering, Endrizzi said. Some told me I should be watering as little as possible, just watering enough to reach the roots.

Endrizzi, a software engineer, said he started thinking about how weak automated sprinkler systems like his really are. Come torrential rain or blistering sunshine, they keep watering and watering through torrential rain or blistering sunshine because that is what they're programmed to do.

So Endrizzi set out to create a smart sprinkler system. Skydrop replaces old sprinkler controllers. It connects to a home's wireless network and then starts pulling real-time weather data from the Internet. This stops sprinklers from running when they're not needed, for example, during a rain storm. It measures humidity, temperature, wind, even the slope of the yard, to create a schedule Endrizzi said will save water.

Redding man creates roof sprinkler to save homes from fires - September 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    REDDING, Calif. -

Joseph Lewellyn invented a way to protect homes from burning.

He calls it Inferno Protection, a roof sprinkler system installed on top of homes.

Lewellyn said he has been working on the design for 8 years at his home in north Redding.

"I was trying to think of a way to save homes from wildfires and houses catching fire next door and this is what I came up with," Lewellyn said.

He said the system is simple and can be installed on any roof.

Lewellyn said the sprinklers would be installed using either PVC or copper pipes. Once the system is turned on, the water would soak the roof, dousing any hot ashes or embers.

"Everybody has water and as long as you have a water flow your house is not going to burn," Lewellyn said.

The on and off switch is designed to be outside and accessible to firefighters or anyone who might be in the are during a fire.

Lewellyn works with a licensed contractor who will install the systems. He said the price depends on the house.

Lincoln Elementary sustains water damage - September 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lincoln Elementary School is cleaning up after two of its classrooms sustained water damage Sunday afternoon.

Principal Theresa Smith said a sprinkler head broke off the schools fire sprinkler system, spewing water all over Pam McGhees second-grade classroom.

We did have quite a bit of water damage. The fire department came and was able to shut that off, Smith said.

The water caused damage to reading books, text books and other classroom materials before spilling into the hallway and flooding the music room across the hall.

Some water also seeped into the Title I classroom.

The music teacher is going from room to room to teach music today, Smith said Monday.

The second grade class spent the day in the library.

The school hired Premier Carpet Care of Beatrice to help remedy the problem. The company sucked more than 250 gallons of water from the classrooms and brought in dehumidifiers to dry out the carpet and walls on Monday.

Smith said a teacher was working in the building when the sprinkler head broke. The fire alarm went off, and the teacher called the fire department and the principal.

Because the problem was noticed right away, Smith said the damage was not as bad as it could have been, although many books and classroom materials had to be thrown away.
