Ladera golf course is coming back to life - October 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ........................................................................................................................................................................................

Laderas director of golf, Sam Zimmerly, says there hasnt been this much grass on the course in decades. This photo, taken in July, shows the No. 6 hole. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. If you havent played Ladera Golf Course in recent weeks, then you havent played Ladera in many years.

    Maybe ever.

After years of struggling to have much if any grass on the fairways, and after what appeared to be a botched $2 million renovation for a new sprinkler system in 2011-12, something very interesting has finally happened at Ladera.

Its turned into a golf course, and it is still improving daily.

I got here in June of 1995, and Ive never had this much grass here ever, said Sam Zimmerly, the courses director of golf. Even in the heydays of the late 80s, when I played here as a competitor at New Mexico Opens, there was not nearly this much grass.

Its the new watering system. They put the heads in the correct position to water where we needed to water, and we have the proper fairway lines and even rough lines where we never had them before. And even though we have so much more grass, the new system cut the water bill down by 25 percent.

As of today, the entire course has again opened.

For much of the year, only the front side was open while new cart paths were being completed on the back nine. But all 18 on the championship course, as well as the executive nine, are ready to roll.

Fire inside Prohibition Monday knocked down by sprinkler system - October 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Firefighters work the scene of a fire Monday afternoon at 547 King Street that is partially occupied by Prohibition Charleston. Matthew Fortner/Staff

A fire that ignited inside a popular King Street restaurant Monday afternoon was knocked down by a sprinkler system firefighters say.

Firefighters responded to a reported fire at Prohibition at 547 King St. at 4:39 p.m. and confirmed that smoke was coming from inside the building, said Ryan Kunitzer, community educator for the Charleston Fire Department.

Kunitzer said the fire had activated a sprinkler head which prevented the fire from spreading. A fire extinguisher was also used from outside the building to help contain it, he said.

There were employees inside the building at the time but the business was closed and no one was hurt.

Firefighters from Charleston and the St. Andrews Fire Department responded, closing part of the street.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The restaurant was closed Tuesday. A staff member said they hoped to reopen Wednesday.

One dead in Tacoma fire - October 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Tacoma, Wash.

When fire broke out at the Annobee apartments in Tacoma on Tuesday morning, a sprinkler system quickly doused the flames. But that wasnt enough to save a woman who died in the apartment where the fire started.

Firefighters found the womans body on a search through the unit after arriving on scene around 11:00. Its sad, said Annobee resident Denise Palfrey.

Around 30 residents were evacuated after fire alarms sounded. Denise Crouch said she thought it was just another false alarm at first. After the alarm went off then we figured out what was going on, we saw black smoke, said Crouch.

Firefighters said it was fortunate the flames didn't spread because most of the residents are elderly and may have had trouble getting out of the building. The sprinkler system activated and contained that fire to the room of origin, said Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke. Meinecke said investigators were working to determine the cause of the blaze, but early indications pointed to a cigarette in the dead womans apartment. Her name had not been released as of Tuesday evening.

Crouch said the womans death is a tragedy. Its sad, it really is, said Crouch. This is an elderly apartment and she couldnt help herself, and thats the sad part about it. She couldnt help herself get out.

Rachio Iro smart sprinkler system keeps your lawn green while saving water - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A couple of weeks ago I told you about the Skydrop sprinkler systemwhich usesyour soil conditions and local weather to better schedule when itwaters your lawn. That system was priced at $299. If you want a slightly less expensive solution, consider the Rachio Iro smart sprinkler system. Priced at $249, this system also mounts on the wall and can be controlled from your iOS or Android device.

The patent-pending controller acts as the brain of a landscape irrigation system, automatically adjusting to weather conditions and seasonality to use as little water as possible to maintain beautiful lawns and gardens. Iros Smart-Cycle feature applies water at a rate the local soil type can absorb to further prevent runoff and waste.

Installation is simple, just unplug your existing lawn irrigation controller, detach the low voltage zone wires and then mount the Iro to the wall, reconnect the wires and plug it in. Your Android or iOS device can be used to monitor or customize the automated watering schedule. For more info visit https://www.rach.io/.

Nation's air travel system slowly recovering after disruption - September 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Last Updated Sep 27, 2014 9:04 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- The nation's air travel system slowly began to recover Saturday after an alleged act of employee sabotage at a large regional air traffic control center brought Chicago's two international airports to a halt.

At the height of the travel misery Friday, more than 2,000 flights in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports had been canceled, sending waves of travel disruption rippling across the country.

Ben Mutzabaugh, editor at USA Today, joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday" to discuss how the alleged arson fire at an air traffic control center is...

Authorities say a contract employee started a fire Friday morning in the basement telecommunications room of a control center in the Chicago suburb of Aurora and then attempted to commit suicide by slashing his throat. Brian Howard, 36, of Naperville, was charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, a felony. The FBI said Howard remains hospitalized and no court date has been scheduled.

As of late Saturday afternoon, total Chicago flight cancelations for the day stood at more than 780 - still a damagingly high number, but an improvement. Southwest Airlines, the dominant carrier at Midway, had hoped to resume a full flight schedule Saturday, but had to cancel all flights between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CDT.

Lines remained long at O'Hare, which is a major U.S. hub. Many travelers stranded overnight slept on cots provided by the airport, in scenes reminiscent of winter storm disruptions.

The Federal Aviation Administration facility in Aurora, about 40 miles west of downtown Chicago, handles planes cruising at high altitudes through the air space as well as those just beginning to approach or completing a departure from airports in the Chicago area. It remained shut down Saturday, and its responsibilities have been transferred to centers in Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis. The FAA's command center in Warrenton, Virginia, was also working to increase the traffic flow.
