California water cops are on the patrol, combing the streets of various communities to make sure nobody is watering their grass or washing their vehicles without government permission even asking neighbors to turn in neighbors who go against the states drought rules.
Some even bring cameras on the job to catch violators watering their lawns at night, Reuters reported.
If I can get a good picture if theres a lot of water Ill cite them, said Paul Brown, a hired meter reader who was patrolling his Sacramento-area neighborhood when he heard a running sprinkler system, Reuters reported.
Mr. Brown said he specifically asked to patrol that particular area because a lot of neighbors were complaining about others in the community who were wasting water, Reuters reported.
For the unlucky water sprinkler owner, Mr. Browns patrol brought on a warning but subsequent offenses could bring a fine of up to $500, Reuters said. A second offense would also require the homeowners to attend a meeting on how to save water.
Sacramento has hired six water cops like Mr. Brown to patrol the streets for water violators and to field telephone calls from residents who want to turn in their neighbors, Reuters said.
The patrols and tattle-telling seems to be working. Water use in the city fell by 25 percent in August 2014, compared to August 2013, Reuters said. And around the state, water use fell by 11.5 percent in that same month, compared to August 2013.
Regulations make better results than voluntary exhortations, said Felicia Marcus, chairwoman of the State Water Resources Control Board, on the new enforcement measures, Reuters reported. People want to know that everybody else is doing it.
In Los Angeles, the city has fielded 4,400 reports of water use violators leading to 2,200 warning citations. And Long Beach officers residents have the ability to use a water-waster app for their smartphones so they can report neighbors and businesses who use water to clean sidewalks, or who fail to repair water line leaks, to the conservation authorities, Reuters reported.

A fire in a sixth-floor room at the DoubleTree Hotel near Reid Park on Thursday was put out by an automatic sprinkler system, officials said.
Tucson Fire Department firefighters were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the hotel at 445 S. Alvernon Way and found a fire in a room on the upper-level floor, said Capt. Barrett Baker, a department spokesman.
When firefighters made entry into the room, they confirmed the blaze was out, Baker said. Crews turned the sprinkler system off and put large fans in the room to push the smoke out, he said.
No injuries were reported. Baker said he did not know if anyone was in the room at the time the fire broke out.
For precautionary measures, about 200 people were evacuated from the hotel.
The cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not known.

The province intends to implement changes to the BC Building Code that will minimize the citys ability to protect people in the event of a fire, says one councillor.
Thats because the B.C. government has served notice it is working towards a uniform building code that will eliminate municipalities authority to write its own standards.
Coun. Claire Moglove said at last weeks Tuesday council meeting that it will threaten the citys sprinkler regulations which require residential buildings with more than two units and commercial buildings to be outfitted with an indoor fire suppression system.
This purports to take away the right of local governments to have a building code, or aspects of their building code, which are greater than what will be in the provincial building code, Moglove said.
This has specific ramifications for our sprinkler bylaw.
There are 30 other local governments across B.C. that also have local fire sprinkler requirements, including the City of Pitt Meadows whose mayor wrote a letter that was before Campbell River council last week.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters wrote that her city has seen positive results with sprinkler requirements that have enhanced public safety, reduced fire service costs, and dramatically reduced fire losses, both human and structural.
Removal of the ability of local governments with such bylaw or policy provisions to continue to ensure such efficient and effective service is unacceptable without an alternative solution that, at minimum, provides them with equal or better results to those obtained by the current system, Walters wrote.
The Fire Chiefs Association of BC says international research evidence shows that use of a fire sprinkler system provides dramatic reduction in loss of life and injuries, according to Don Jolley, first vice-president of the association.
Installation costs are well within the affordable range for builders and home-owners alike and the added life safety cannot be overstated, Jolley wrote.

FERRISBURGH The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Oct. 7 approved in concept adding sprinklers to the new highway garage that will soon be built on Little Chicago Road.
Road foreman John Bull said he expected the cost of the sprinklers to be around $40,000, and that amount was affordable due to savings elsewhere on the $1.05 million project. Board members said they would back the proposal if final estimates came in as expected.
Bull said ground would be broken in November, with a January completion date.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
A Youngstown State University football player is facing a felony charge of vandalism for damage to a sprinkler system.
Witnesses say 20-year-old Michael Wheary of Lakeland, Florida was having a verbal argument with his girlfriend Sunday night, when he punched two holes in the wall at his room in Wick Oval Courtyard Apartments.
The wall was directly underneath a sprinkler system and YSU police say the force of Wheary's blows had appeared to have cracked a pipe in the system. Water poured from the apartment room, causing what police called more than $7,000 worth of "serious damage" to light fixtures, walls, carpeting and personal property of other renters in the complex.
Wheary, a junior, has been dismissed from the football team
Our print partner the Vindicator is reporting that the flooding caused approximately 90,000 in damages and that he is suspended from living in any university house while the case is under investigation.
Wheary was arraigned by video on Tuesday at Youngstown Municipal Court. Bond was set at 10 percent of $2,500.
Wheary has a preliminary hearing scheduled on November 20 at 10:00 a.m.
