A sprinkler system in a downtown Charleston apartment extinguished a kitchen fire Sunday. Officials say it is the second time in two weeks a fire at an apartment has been extinguised by a sprinkler.
A small kitchen fire was extinguished Sunday after it set off an apartment sprinkler system in North Charleston, according to officials.
Charleston and North Charleston Fire Departments responded just after 11:40 a.m. to the fire at North Central Apartments, 1054 King Street.
It was determined a single fire sprinkler head, located in the kitchen of the apartment, had extinguished a fire on the stove - which began after someone had a medical emergency while cooking. No injuries were reported and fire damage was limited to the stove area with minimal smoke and heat damage within the apartment.
Charleston Fire Department community educator Ryan Kunitzer said in a news release that this is the second time in two weeks that a sprinkler system has extinguished a "growing fire in a multi-tenant occupancy" in the City of Charleston.

SALISBURY, Md. - Officials are crediting a residential sprinkler system with saving a Salisbury home.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says around 12:50 PM on Wednesday, a Salisbury man walked into his Woodbrooke Drive home, and found that the sprinklers and smoke alarms inside his townhouse had activated. The resident called 911, and ten firefighters with the Salisbury Fire Department responded, and found the remnants of the fire in a corner of the living room.
An investigation reported showed that an electrical fire in the HVAC system cause a power surge, lighting the low voltage thermostat mounted on the wall, on fire. The sprinkler system turned on, and kept the flames contained to the living room. The rest of the home, and it's contents, weren't damaged.
Maintenance personnel is now working to repair, and clean-up after the incident. Damages were estimated to total $5,000. No injuries were reported.
State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci stated, "Residential fire sprinklers are proven to save lives, prevent injuries and protect property and valuables. This is yet another example of how the presence of a residential fire sprinkler system protected occupants and prevented substantial fire damage to residential property."

A fire sprinkler system quickly extinguished a fire that ignited in a couch early Saturday at the Canterbury House on Market Street. Charleston Fire Department/Provided
A sprinkler system quickly doused a fire at a senior living facility in downtown Charleston early Saturday and may well have saved lives, Charleston Fire Department officials said.
At 3:42 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to Canterbury House at 165 Market St. for an automatic fire alarm, according to a news release from the Fire Department.
When the first unit arrived, firefighters saw smoke in a fourth-floor hallway, the release said. The call was upgraded to a possible structure fire and additional units were summoned. More firefighters and apparatus from the city, St. Andrews and James Island fire departments responded, as well as Charleston County EMS and the Charleston Police Department.
Firefighters entered an apartment on the fourth floor, helped a resident get outside to a safe area and extinguished the remaining couch fire with a hand-held water fire extinguisher, the release said.
The couch fire had been safely and quickly contained by the activation of single sprinkler head in the living room, the release said.
"This is yet another example of the profound benefits of a fire sprinkler system," Fire Chief Karen Brack said. "Fire sprinkler systems consistently prove their value in improving the life safety of residents and emergency responders while limiting property damage."
"Without the fire sprinkler system we would have had a substantial event, damaged multiple apartments, and displaced numerous residents," said Fire Marshal Mike Julazadeh. "The fire sprinkler system, coupled with the fire alarm, was part of the life safety system of this building and provided early warning and fire control."
The department's Fire Marshal Division responded to investigate the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.
Damage from the fire was limited to the sofa. Management is working to repair water damage and restore minimal smoke and fire damage. One occupant was relocated to another apartment and no injuries were reported.

YOON C Lee, a Samsung Electronics Co executive, is giving a tour of his US home in Oakland. He shows off his living room and foyer, then takes a look outside to check the garden. He considers turning on the sprinkler system before deciding the plants have enough water.
The thing is, hes not actually in California. Hes 8,000 miles away with a reporter in a Seoul conference room. Lee, a tall, 49-year-old, is at a huge table fiddling with a Galaxy S5 phone thats streaming live video from the US.
This is Samsungs next big bet as it works to build a future beyond mobile phones, where earnings are tumbling. Lee and his colleagues are trying to create another hit from whats known as the Internet of things, technology that stitches together phones, cameras, sprinklers and roads. If they succeed, the effort could propel sales of the companys electronics, appliances and chips for a generation; if they fail, the troubles will likely deepen.
Imagine if all the dumb things around you can be connected, said Lee. For Samsung, this is a big new opportunity, a huge paradigm shift. It will benefit us across all businesses.
Samsungs Internet push comes just as Apple Inc, Google Inc and dozens of others are sizing up the same opportunity. Techs giants are all vying for leadership and collaborating where necessary. The market for the Internet of things is projected to hit US$7.1 trillion by 2020, according to the research firm IDC.
In a sign of how seriously Samsung is taking the effort, the company is transferring about 500 engineers from its mobile-phone division and allocating them largely to the Internet initiative, according to people familiar with the matter. The shift also reflects recognition that the Suwon, South Korea-based company needs another hit after smartphones, they said, asking not to be identified discussing internal matters.
This is a must-have market for Samsung, said Neil Mawston, executive director of the research firm Strategy Analytics. The Internet of things will be too big to ignore.
The mobile-phone unit is faltering as Apple offers bigger screen iPhones similar to Samsungs marquee Galaxy range and Chinese newcomer Xiaomi sells stylish phones at low prices. In the most recent quarter, Samsungs mobile profit tumbled 74 per cent, dragging net income down by 49 per cent from a year earlier.
The Internet of things represents the third revolution in information technology, after the PC and the Internet, Michael Porter and James E Heppelman wrote in this months edition of the Harvard Business Review. Its implications go beyond the increasing number of smart, connected products in the world and are much more than simply a way to transmit information, they wrote.
With more everyday things connected to the Internet, products will have expanded capabilities and the data they generate may change how companies compete and the boundaries of competition, Porter and Heppelman said.
