A number of Okotoks seniors can rest easier knowing they have an added layer of protection against fire hazards.
Alberta Seniors Minister Jeff Johnson visited Sandstone Lodge on Feb. 27, and informed the residents the provincial government is providing $500,000 for a sprinkler retrofit for the 25-year-old residence, which was constructed before sprinklers in seniors homes were mandatory.
The lodge is run by the Foothills Foundation, and chief administrative officer Lauren Ingalls said installing a sprinkler system was always something it had hoped for, but knew it wouldnt be able to do it alone.
As far as being able to financially afford it, half a million dollars... we would have been saving for a significant number of years before being able to accommodate that, she said. This increases, from our staffs perception, our level of safety It's just an added layer of protection.
The facility currently has sprinklers in the kitchen and in the basement, but the retrofit will see sprinklers installed in each residents room.
Thats good news for residents Doris Knight and Mae Taylor, who said theyve always felt safe in the lodge since they practice fire drills every month, but are looking forward to increased safety.
Were close to the door, all I have to do is take a few steps and I'm out the door, Knight said.
Taylor agreed.
But I think it's a good idea, just makes you feel a little bit more secure, she added.
The funding is part of an $80-million commitment the government made last October to upgrade sprinkler systems in a number of facilities throughout the province. The lodges with the potential highest risk are being done first, and Sandstone was near the top of the list due to its rural setting and low staff numbers.

BEND, Ore. -
A fire in a southeast Bend industrial park Thursday night caused $30,000 damage to a welding shop, but likely would have been far more severe and spread to adjoining businesses if a sprinkler system and fire alarm hadnt kicked in, officials said.
Firefighters responded around 9:40 p.m. to a fire alarm sounding at Wilson Warehouses, a multi-tenant industrial complex at 1310 SE Armour Road, said Deputy Fire Marshal Cindy Kettering.
They arrived to find the fire in a welding shop, confined to a single tenant in Suites 13 and 14 of the building. Losses were estimated at $15,000 to the building and $15,000 to the contents.
The fire was found to be accidental in nature, Kettering said later Friday, but an exact cause could not be determined.
The fire official said damage to the business would have been far more severe were it not for the fact that the building is equipped with a full fire sprinkler system, which held the fire in check until fire crews arrived and finished putting it out.
The sprinkler head activation also triggered the fire alarm, leading to a quicker dispatch of crews, Kettering said, noting that having occurred at night, it could have been a considerable amount of time before the fire was discovered.
Without a doubt, working fire sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems saved this business, she said.
It was the second fire tackled in southeast Bend Thursday night.
Around 6:45 p.m., a residential structure fire was reported at 21210 McGilvray Road. Crews arrived to find smoke in the rare of the home, in the area of the woodstove, said fire Capt. Darren Root.

Firefighters say a frozen sprinkler system caused flooding inside a Batavia business.
Crews were called to Batavia Enclosures around 6 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, crews say they found about four inches of water on the warehouse floor. We're told a city DPW worker dug out the main shut off valve from several feet of snow and turned the water off.
Batavia firefighters say this is the second time this week they've been called for a frozen sprinkler system. If there is one in your home or business, we're told portable heaters can help keep those pipes from freezing.

Frozen sprinkler pipes at Stop and Shop and Ridgefield High School on Monday and again on Wednesday, and a malfunctioning water valve at the Prospector Theater on Saturday, sent the fire department scrambling around town to systems being affected by the recent cold weather.
Because of the cold weather, some peoples pipes are freezing and may break since ice expands when frozen, said Fire Chief Kevin Tappe on Tuesday. We have seen a couple of issues regarding frozen or broken fire sprinkler system pipes lately.
At Stop and Shop, fire crews found a broken sprinkler head outside the bottle return area. It was the same exact head that broke last winter, Chief Tappe said.
Stop & Shop had their sprinkler company repair the pipe, he added. The sprinkler system was shut off for a short period while the work was being done.
The sprinkler pipe in the front lobby of the high school also froze Monday when kids were not in school.
Chief Tappe said the system was shut down while repairs were being made.
He added that if a required sprinkler system is incapacitated or shut down for more than four hours, the business must close or hire off duty firefighters to provide a fire watch.
The number of firefighters required is determined by the fire marshal based upon square footage and occupancy, he explained.
Chief Tappe said the Prospector didnt suffer from a frozen sprinkler pipe, rather a relief valve on the fire sprinkler system had malfunctioned allowing water to escape.
The management decided to shut off the sprinkler system until repairs could be made, he said. They also chose not to close the business and hired two firefighters for seven hours on Saturday, 14 hours on Sunday and another four hours on Monday until repairs could be made and the system restored.
