Sprinkler system bursts in vacant East Liberty building, flooding neighboring businesses - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

For much of Tuesday, the basement of the William Penn Smoke Shop in East Liberty looked like a scene from disaster movie The Poseidon Adventure.

A broken sprinkler system in a neighboring building flooded the convenience store's storage area with up to 4 feet of water.

Cigarette cartons and crates of soda were swept up in the fast-moving tide.

Store owner Prakash Maniyar worked feverishly to relocate inventory to higher ground but salvaged only a few packages of tortilla chips.

In all, more than $7,000 of Maniyar's merchandise was ruined, along with business records he kept in an office in the basement.

Once the water started rising, it came very fast, he said Wednesday.

Officials say the flooding began in a vacant building on North Highland Avenue and spilled into the basements of at least three nearby businesses. Fire crews pumped more than 1 million gallons of water from the stores.

The vacant building where the flooding began is owned by Nigel Parkinson, a District of Columbia -based developer, according to property records. Parkinson could not be reached Wednesday.

Neighboring business owners said city officials told them Parkinson's building wasn't properly heated, causing its sprinkler piping system to freeze and then rupture with the thaw.

The building where the flooding began has no history of code violations, said Erik Harless, assistant director of Pittsburgh's Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections.

Backpackers remains open despite fire fears - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Hawke's Bay backpackers lodge deemed to be a lethal fire risk seven months ago remains open and is accepting guests.

The Fire Service found a raft of problems with the Farmhouse Lodge between Napier and Hastings last year, including the fact its sprinkler system and smoke alarms did not work, its fire extinguishers had not been maintained, and the stairs on an external fire escape were in a state of disrepair.

The Fire Service believed that death or injury would be likely in the event of a fire. Its investigation also discovered that the sprinkler system had previously failed during a fire and that past inspections had showed the alarm system was in a state of disrepair. Maintenance records were not available.

The two-storey former pub, which is about 130 years old, belongs to Dawson Bliss, who lives in it.

In July last year, Hastings District Council issued the lodge with two dangerous building notices and gave Bliss 10 days to fix the problems. In December, the council chose to prosecute him.

The lodge continued to take guests, and appeared to be open when The Dominion Post visited this week. Bliss, 55, appears in court later this month and could not be reached for comment.

The Fire Service said it was not able to close a building deemed to be such a major risk.

Bronx residents displaced due to power outage caused by sprinkler system problem - March 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MORRISANIA (WABC) --

Water everywhere, tends to do that.

A broken sprinkler system created a disastrous domino effect where crews were forced to make emergency repairs, leaving tenants out in the cold.

No water, no heat, no electricity...India Guerrero says it's horrible.

About a dozen tenants in the Morrisania section of the Bronx are displaced.

"It's a disaster. I'm tired. Management knows about the problem, but they don't want to do anything about it," said Renald Deleon, a tenant.

"To be safe, we close everything to be safe. Because if something happens then we save a life," said Jose, the building's super.

The building's super says unfortunately these things happen, but the timing of course is bad. It's brutally cold outside.

The Office of Emergency Management helped organize a team of firefighters, Building Department, Con Edison, and Housing Preservation workers along with the Red Cross.

"Just waiting for numbers. Waiting for the Buildings Department and HPD to get more information about how many people are affected," said Brian Green, of the Red Cross.

Officials Sprinkler system helps 14-year-old girl escape intense Derry garage fire - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

DERRY -- Fire officials say a residential sprinkler system helped knock down an intense garage fire at 3 Alder Court on Monday, and also helped save a 14-year-old girl who was home at the time.

The girl was in the basement and unaware of the fire in the attached garage until she noticed water running from the sprinkler system and saw smoke filling the house. After seeing the garage was on fire, she was able to escape, said Derry fire Lt. Jack Webb.

The forward progress of the fire in the garage was stopped until firefighters could arrive and extinguish the blaze.

That sprinkler system stopped the fire, Webb said, adding it allowed the little girl to get out of the house.

Firefighters were able rescue a small dog that was uninjured, he said.

The first call came into the dispatch center at 3:36 p.m. and crews were on the scene at 3:44 p.m., Webb said.

When they arrived, the garage was fully involved, with fire above the roof line.

Firefighters from four stations responded to the blaze that went to two alarms, Webb said. Crews had to contend with bitter cold and icy conditions. There were also five other calls that occurred in town during the fire, including a major sprinkler system burst at Shaw's Supermarket.

The crews poured a lot of water onto the garage of the two-story Colonial-style house and the fire was declared under control at about 5 p.m., Webb said

Crews remained on the scene until 7:23 p.m. for overhaul and to assist the family members recover their belongings.

Sprinkler system helps teen girl, blocked by snow, escape from basement amid garage fire - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

DERRY, N.H. A fire in a garage almost trapped a teenage girl inside an adjoining house after one of her exits was blocked by snow, but a sprinkler head deployed, buying enough time for her to scamper out the other exit to safety, firefighters said.

Firefighters, who had been called by neighbors, arrived Monday evening to find flames engulfing the two-car garage and beginning to spread into the 2 1/2-story wood-frame home in Derry. The garage collapsed with big parts of the roof intact, suppressing the fire below the roof and making it more difficult to put out the flames, firefighters said.

A 14-year-old girl was home at the time of the fire. The home was protected by a sprinkler system, and one sprinkler head between the garage and the home was activated, unleashing water onto the flames and preventing most of the fire from spreading to the house, firefighters said.

The girl was in the home's basement, but the "secondary exit out of the basement was blocked by snow," firefighters said.

The girl, aided by the sprinkler, scrambled out of the basement's primary exit and made it out through the home's front door, firefighters said. Without the sprinkler system, they said, the fire would have blocked her exit.

No injuries were reported in the fire, whose cause hadn't been determined. Firefighters found and rescued a dog, which was uninjured.

The sprinkler system ran out of water while firefighting crews used their hoses. Part of the fire extended into the home's attic and the roof of a porch.

The home's living area was damaged by smoke and water and will be uninhabitable until it's professionally cleaned, firefighters said. The garage was destroyed.

The fire loss, including the garage's contents, was estimated to be $150,000.

Sprinkler system saves Mesa retirement complex - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MESA - A fire quickly put out by sprinklers saved residents of a retirement living community in Mesa Monday morning, according to fire officials.

The fire began after flammable material was left on top of a stove in the three-story complex, located near Main Street and Recker Road, according to the Mesa Fire Department. The fire did not spread farther than the kitchen, and was extinguished by an in-house sprinkler system.

Several residents were displaced due to smoke and water damage, the department added. It is unknown how many residents were displaced, but officials know of at least three apartments damaged by the water flow from the sprinkler.

No one was injured in the fire.

Fire officials said the quick suppression of the fire saved the lives of those residing in the complex and the property from suffering major damage.
