NMSU Computer Center reopens after sprinkler malfunction - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ........................................................................................................................................................................................

LAS CRUCES New Mexico State University says a fire suppression system unexpectedly activated at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning at the main campus Computer Center, sparking a hazmat response.

The system was triggered during a scheduled maintenance test, according to Justin Bannister, a university spokesman. During the test, artificial smoke set off the sprinkler system, which is charged with a fire retardant chemical.

Five people who were in the Computer Center during the incident were treated on site for fume inhalation; a sixth was transported to Memorial Medical Center for further treatment, Bannister said.

When triggered, the fire suppression system shuts down the building electrical system, which caused networking and phone services to shut down across part of the campus. It also affected student services, including the online portal Banner.

The services were restored by Tuesday afternoon, with the exception of a few hundred staff e-mail accounts and a handful of departmental web pages on the universitys servers.

Damage to the Computer Center was limited to a few ceiling tiles. The building was reopened to students Tuesday afternoon.

According to Bannister, investigators from the company that manufactures and maintains the fire suppression system were expected to investigate the incident on Tuesday afternoon to figure out why the system malfunctioned and to recharge it with the chemical retardant.

Home Sprinkler Systems Could Be Mandatory - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

CARROLLTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY - The State Fire Commissioner says someone in Pennsylvania dies in a fire every three days.

Now some people are looking at an old idea to save lives. Lawmakers are considering making it mandatory for all new homes to have sprinkler systems. Firefighters say it could save lives, but some people think it should be the builder's choice.

Monday night Chief Bob Illig and the Carrolltown Fire Department hosted several other companies from northern Cambria County to listen to a speaker from the National Fire Sprinkler Association. Ray Lonabaugh told the crowd that with modern building materials a house fire can reach flashover, where the flames are shooting out of the windows, in three or four minutes in stead of fifteen. And he thinks a sprinkler system could keep a fire small before it gets out of control.

Jim Brown with the Pennsylvania Builders Association says aspects of new home construction make them safer, and sprinkler systems less important. They'll put them in new homes for people, but they don't think sprinklers should be mandatory.

In 2009, sprinkler systems almost became mandatory for new homes. But now officials are looking at them again for the 2015 building code. And Brown says the Governor is in favor of them. Since they were brought up in 2009, Brown has asked every homebuilder in the design phase if they want a system and no one has said yes.

Sprinkler mishap displaces Redstone senior home residents - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Several residents at the Redstone Highlands senior community in North Huntingdon were greeted by firefighters and paramedics last week after a fire sprinkler was accidentally damaged and sprayed water into a second-floor apartment.

One of our maintenance men was painting a vacant apartment and broke a sprinkler head when he hit it with the roller he was using, said Linda Dickson, the facility's director of marketing and sales.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on March 30.

The fire sprinkler system is set to automatically alert emergency personnel when it is activated, Dickson said.

They arrived amazingly fast literally in minutes and were able to stop the flow of water from the sprinkler, she said.

As a precaution, emergency personnel helped evacuate about 20 residents who live in area near the apartment where the sprinkler was damaged. After firefighters checked the building to make sure it was safe to occupy, most of the residents were allowed to return.

Although the flow of water was brief, it damaged the unit being painted, as well as four first-floor units below, Dickson said. Residents in the four damaged apartments that were occupied have been moved temporarily to empty units in the four-story complex, which has 95 senior apartments and 40 personal-care units.

The emergency workers and our employees were able to move their furniture and belongings to some empty apartments we have, she said. We're hoping to be able to get people back in their apartments within a week or two.

Most of the damage was isolated to ceilings and carpeting, said Dickson, adding that a restoration company was called in to handle cleanup and repairs. The four displaced residents are expected to be able to return to their apartments within the next two weeks, Dickson said.

Although the incident has created a minor inconvenience for some residents, Dickson said, the staff is viewing it in a positive light.

How Tech Could Save California Lawns - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The plush, green lawns that dot the cities and suburbs of California are in danger.

New restrictions meant to cut water use by 25 percent amid a four-year drought could force home owners to let their grass go brown unless new smart sprinkler controllers save the day. These gadgets use Wi-Fi and sensors to cut back water usage on lawns by anywhere from 30 to 50 percent.

"It's a proven technology," said David Sedlak, co-director of the Berkeley Water Center and author of "Water 4.0: The Past, Present, and Future of the World's Most Vital Resource."

California is taking unprecedented measures to address the prolonged drought. On Wednesday, Gov. Jerry Brown held a press conference to issue the executive order. His message was clear: "The idea of your nice little green lawn getting watered every day, those days are past."

While agriculture uses 80 percent of the water in California, there is still plenty of H20 used in residential areas. And a lot of that is being wasted. Nationally, 50 percent of the water used on lawns disappears thanks to the wind, evaporation and runoff, according to the EPA.

Smart sprinkler controllers want to prevent all of that water from disappearing. They work kind of like Nest, the smart thermostat, except that they regulate water use instead of the temperature.

Rachio is already available at Home Depot and will start appearing at Best Buy locations next month. Skydrop will be at every Lowe's in the country starting on May 1 (Both are already available online). They use a Wi-Fi connection to constantly monitor local weather conditions. Combined with data about the lawn (e.g. the slope, soil type, and vegetation), they automatically tell the sprinkler system how much water to release.

"Normal sprinkler controllers are almost like egg timers, and they control a very valuable resource," Chris Klein, co-founder of Rachio, told NBC News.

"They have no concept of the environment around them they don't know what season it is, they don't know what the weather is like. With the technology that we have today, there is no reason to have these kinds of controllers anymore."

When lawns do need water, these smart controllers release it in timed bursts so that the water is absorbed completely before the soil gets hit with more. That prevents water from pooling in the sun to evaporate or oversaturating the lawn and running down the driveway.

Hot sheets blamed for laundry firm fire - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sprinkler system has saved a laundry business after hot sheets pulled from a dryer are believed to have spontaneously combusted.

It was one of two fires in Christchurch overnight extinguished by automatic sprinkler systems.

Addington station officer Brian Reid said crews were called about 1.10am on Wednesday to Canterbury Linen Services in Hillmorton, which supplies the Canterbury District Health Board.

Reid suspected the fire may have been caused by sheets that had recently been pulled from the dryer and piled into bins. The sheets were likely to have spontaneously combusted, causing the localised fire inside the building.

"The damage was confined basically to three to four bins that were stacked together around the one that caught fire, but the sprinkler held it there until we arrived and sorted it out," he said.

Reid understood the business would continue to operate.

Earlier, Christchurch central crews were called to the abandoned All Seasons Hotel in Merivale.

The Papanui Rd building was left empty since the 2011 earthquakes and dubbed a "cesspit for squatters" by one city councillor..

A Fire Service spokesman said a fire, deemed suspicious, on the fourth floor was extinguished by a sprinkler system before firefighters arrived.

Fire investigators were expected to arrive at the scene on Wednesday, he said.
