District Approves Lincoln Sprinkler System - August 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Davenport Community School District is spending more than a quarter million dollars on a school it closed recently to save money.

The Davenport School Board approved a new fire sprinkler system for the former Lincoln School. The project will cost $288,000.

District officials said the expense is necessary in order to keep the school an asset in its neighborhood. It needs to install the sprinklers to meet fire codes so a Head Start preschool program can operate out of the building. Officials said installing the sprinkler system will also allow other preschool programs to be in the building.

Even though the school was previously an elementary school, the district did not need sprinklers for it to operate.

The school closed in May of 2012 to save an estimated $1.4 million for the district.

It was empty until the district brought in an after school program and a homeschool program.

District officials said the programs are important not only to the surrounding neighbors, but to the community as a whole.

"When you close a school, you change a neighborhood," School Board Member Patt Zamora said. "And we didn't want to do that. We wanted to keep Lincoln viable and keep it being used so it's still a hub for the neighborhood."

"One of the things we wanted to make sure of was that Lincoln is a community asset," Superintendent Dr. Arthur Tate said. "Especially a neighborhood asset. So we've been looking to see whatever goes in and uses that school is something that would go in and do exactly that - it will enhance the neighborhood."

School officials said many of the programs that will be operating out of Lincoln School will have to pay rent. The school board estimates that in the long run - the rent money will more than make up the cost of installing the sprinkler system.

County highway department to get sprinkler system - August 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Jackson County Highway Department is looking to install a sprinkler system in the aftermath of a Christmas Eve fire that caused extensive damage to its Black River Falls shop.

Highway Commissioner Randy Anderson asked the executive and finance committee for $40,000 in Ho-Chunk Nation funds for the new system, which will provide added protection to the building in case of another fire.

The committee approved the request, and the county board will give the final say on the proposal at its meeting later this month.

Its just that we wanted to add the sprinkler system for added protection, Anderson said.

Had we had the sprinkler system, theres a good chance it would have isolated the fire to the one truck and wouldnt have (allowed it to) spread throughout the entire building.

The Dec. 24, 2012, fire started in a plow truck and left behind 10 damaged plows and extensive damage to the Harrison Street building that totaled $1 million.

Anderson said the shop met state code requirements without a sprinkler system, and the county incurred no insurance premium increases because of the blaze, he said.

However, the highway department will experience an 7.6 percent insurance premium increase for 2014, but thats due to inflation rather than the fire incident, according to county Clerk Kyle Deno.

The county board will consider the highway departments $40,000 request at its meeting Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

Pleasanton: Fire sprinkler system helps contain blaze at dry cleaner - August 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Contra Costa Times

PLEASANTON -- A dry-cleaning business at a strip mall caught fire Wednesday, but a sprinkler system inside the building kept the blaze from spreading and causing even more damage to the surrounding stores, a battalion chief said.

One person was hospitalized after suffering smoke inhalation in the fire at Hacienda Cleaners at 5682 Stoneridge Drive, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Battalion Chief Jack Neiman-Kimel said. The blaze began around 5:47 p.m.

Fire crews saw heavy smoke coming from the business when they arrived, but the fire sprinklers inside the store were activated after clothes on the conveyor system caught fire, Neiman-Kimel said. Those sprinklers kept the fire at bay until crews were able to get inside and extinguish it, Neiman-Kimel said.

Several businesses on both sides of Hacienda Cleaners were damaged by smoke and water, Neiman-Kimel said. Officials did not provide an estimate of the monetary damages to the businesses.

It was not known immediately when the business might open again.
