DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

A structure in Dubuque County caught fire Tuesday evening, but it was with the fire department's blessing.

To raise awareness about the benefits of home sprinkler systems, the city of Dubuque set two nearly identical model rooms on fire.

The one without a sprinkler system went up in major flames in a matter of three minutes. In the other room, the sprinkler system kicked in after about 25 seconds and held the flames at bay.

Jeff Zasada is a building inspector for Dubuque's Building Services Department and led the demonstration. He was also on the Dubuque Fire Department for 18 years.

"I've seen the devastation for loss of family members and also the loss of personal belongings due to fires," Zasada said. "Personally, I'd like to see sprinklers in every home that's built."

He said a family can have a sprinkler system installed in their home for same cost as granite countertops. A recent study he cited estimates a sprinkler system at $1.35 per square foot of a home. A family in a 2,000 square foot home, therefore, would pay some $2,700. Zasada said it's a worthwhile cost to save lives and property damage in the event of a fire, which - as demonstrated Tuesday - spreads very quickly and dangerously.

September 15, 2013 Joplin apartment fire quickly controlled; sprinkler system credited

JOPLIN, Mo. Joplin firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Sunday night at the Frisco Station Apartments building at 601 S. Main St.

Keith Stammer, director of emergency management and acting as public information officer for the Joplin Fire Department, credits a sprinkler system for keeping the fire in check.

This is a case where the sprinkler system did its job and knocked that fire down right away, he told the Globe in a phone interview.

The fire reportedly started in a seventh-floor apartment at 7:15 p.m. when a mattress caught on fire. Stammer said the fire was under control by 7:24 p.m. and extinguished by 7:30 p.m. The seventh floor of the building was evacuated. Stammer added that residents who lived in apartments below the seventh floor were reporting heavy water damage.

The apartment, No. 702, was occupied at the time of the fire. Stammer said a superficial burn was treated at the scene.

Representatives of the American Red Cross were on the scene Sunday night but said other apartments within the building were being made available for residents displaced by the fire.

The fire is still being investigated by a Joplin fire marshal.
