Downtown movie theater closed temporarily after sprinkler system breaks - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) A trendy, new, downtown St. Louis dine-in movie theater is shut down.

The sprinkler system is the adjacent parking garage froze and sprang a leak, the theater owner said; yet another casualty of last weeks sub-zero deep freeze.

TheMX Theatre on Washington Avenue just marked its first anniversary this weekwhile it was shut down.

A Fox 2 crew got inside Wednesday night. It sure seemed like people could be watching movies.

Still, it was closed for an eighth straight night.

What happened was some of the sprinkler pipes in the garage burst, which shut down the entire sprinkler system for the building, including the movie theater, said Amos Harris of Spinnaker-St. Louis, which owns the theater.

The actual water damage to the theater was minimal. A few well-placed trash cans caught any drips and spared the carpeting. There was a little bubbling paint and hard to see water damage to one screen.

But the theater cannot reopen until the sprinkler system is working again.

Ground floor restaurants like Pi-Pizza and Snarfs Sandwiches re-opened after just a few days. But the theater is on the second floorand the owner says that has apparently made the repair more challenging.

TheMX is Pita Gonzales favorite theater. So much so shes holding a charity fundraiser Friday atSnarfs sandwich shop next door for the Paul Mitchell cosmetology school, where shes a student.

Parked cars damaged after sprinkler system floods Mill Valley street - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A water main break outside a Mill Valley retirement community caused some street flooding that damaged about 10 parked cars early Monday morning, a fire official said.

Crews responded to a report of a medical emergency at The Redwoods at 40 Camino Alto at about 6 a.m. On their way there, they were alerted of a possible water main break at the facility unrelated to the medical issue, Mill Valley fire Battalion Chief Scott Barnes said.

Firefighters looking into the water main break discovered that a line that supplies the facilitys sprinkler system had ruptured, sending water into the street, he said.

Its a large main that encircles the facility, Barnes said.

The line is only connected to the sprinkler system, and the residents did not lose their normal water service, he said. Crews found the shutoff valve and stopped the flow of water to the line, but a pool about 18 inches deep had already formed on Camino Alto, Barnes said.

About 10 cars belonging to employees of The Redwoods that were parked along the street appear to have been damaged by water seeping into their interiors, the battalion chief said. He did not know the extent of the damage.

As soon as the water was shut down, we were able to clear some of the drains that were in the street, Barnes said.

After that, the water drained fairly quickly, he said. Two lanes of Camino Alto were shut down because of the flooding, but no buildings were evacuated and there was no water damage to the interior of The Redwoods, he said.

He said the rupture occurred in an area that is fenced off for construction, but that there was no construction activity under way at the time of the break, and the cause remains under investigation.

Marin Municipal Water District spokeswoman Libby Pischel said the line that broke is on private property and is not a water district pipe.

Sprinkler system to be installed following fire at Campsfield immigration centre - January 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sprinkler system to be installed following fire at Campsfield immigration centre

A SPRINKLER system is to be installed at a blaze damaged Kidlington immigration centre after concerns from a fire chief.

The Home Office said it would fit the system as part of repairs to Campsfield House after the October 19 blaze.

The fire in one of three blocks at the Langford Lane centre saw more than 100 detainees moved to other centres.

Two were injured but all have now returned.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Dave Etheridge, right, urged the Home Office to install sprinklers in 2007.

He said the extent of Octobers fire would have been less had the system been fitted.

Home Office spokesman Sally Henfield said: We take the welfare of detainees extremely seriously and comply with all the relevant fire safety legislation.

The decision to install additional fire safety equipment at Campsfield House follows advice from the chief fire officer.

Flood destroys supplies for homeless at Light of Life - January 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Robert Zullo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A flood believed to have been caused by a burst pipe in the fire-sprinkler system destroyed hundreds of bags and boxes of clothes, blankets, toys and other donations for the homeless at Light of Lifes storage building on Ridge Avenue over the weekend.

The flood happened Friday or Saturday but was not discovered until Sunday because the building, a former city school, is only used for storage and special events, according to the nonprofit, which provides meals and housing programs for the homeless.

Water was gushing out of the pipe for nearly six hours after the flooding was discovered Sunday. Light of Life staff say warm weather after last weeks record-breaking frigid temperatures caused the pipe to break and that city workers were unable to assist in shutting it off for hours because of similar problems throughout the city.

We couldnt get it off, said Denny Smith, Light of Lifes director of mens programs. If we were using this building, it would have been a disaster.

About 20 volunteers helped sort the 500 sodden bags and boxes into usable and ruined piles, said Kate Wadsworth, a spokeswoman for the group. Nearly 75 percent of the donations were destroyed, she said.

The nonprofit, which serves about 100,000 meals a year and runs a 22-bed emergency shelter, a 38-bed mens long-term recovery program and a 30-bed program for women and their children, is seeking donations to replace what was lost as well as volunteers to help clean up.
