The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corp. says it will fix some drywall in Veronica Butlers Buckmasters Circle home, replace carpeting, repair flashing and caulk around the outside of windows to address leaking.
This summer and fall, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing will spend $500,000 in Buckmasters Circle to re-shingle or repair roofs, in preparation for a spring 2015 replacement of windows, doors and siding.
Butlers unit is included in that overhaul work.
Butler was frustrated with the condition of her townhouse and appealed to St. Johns South Liberal MHA Tom Osborne, who looked over the situation with TheTelegram last month. In addition to leaks and damaged drywall, Butler had a major mouse infestation.
Since then, pest control officers have been in to set traps, and housing has assessed the issues and told The Telegram this week about the work it plans.
Butler said shes good with getting new windows next year as long as the other repairs start soon and the leaks are fixed in the meantime.
Osborne also said it sounds like some progress is being made.
Meanwhile, Butler remains unconvinced insulation around a pipe in her basement is not disturbed asbestos and is planning on getting it tested herself. NLHC has said its another type of insulation.

Spring is the season when large storms pass through with strong winds and hail pelting your roof. Once these storms pass, what do you do?
If you assume everything is fine and go on with your day, you might overlook damage to your home that could lead to problems down the road.
Ryan Passow, owner of Passow Remodeling, suggests homeowners give their house a quick inspection after thunderstorms to make sure they dont miss any potential repairs.
Items Passow suggests looking for around the house include:

Dented gutters or siding
Chipped paint
Holes in your window screens
Vinyl siding pulled loose by the wind

A Des Moines homeowner is struggling with home damage one month after her home caught fire.

Patty Toth said her neighbor, whose house fire spread to Toths home, didn't have liability insurance. Now Toth must figure out how to fix the damages.
Im a single mom who was laid off a month ago, so I dont have an extra $3,000 lying around to get anything repaired, Toth said. So right now were kind of stuck with a half-burnt house.
The siding on Toths home facing her neighbors house is peeling away and in need of replacement.
Early April 22, Toths neighbors home caught fire and sent three people to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burn treatments. Toth said she was told a lit cigarette on the front porch caused the fire.
Yes, they have a horrible loss and they did spend time in the hospital, and they are a victim of negligence of how the fire was caused, Toth said. But were victims also and theres no help out there for the secondary victim.
The fire did not injure Toth or her son. Because her neighbor does not have liability insurance, Toth said she had to go through her own insurance for repairs. She said the company will cover $5,500 worth of damages and will subtract the 2,500 deductible she cannot afford.
Toth said she cannot find a siding company that will make the repairs for $3,000.
I was going to have some friends come out and help re-side everything and tear everything down, she said. And I was told by the bank that I would have to pay out-of-pocket to do that and then get paid back.

As is too often true of old buildings, this home has been covered with synthetic siding. Such work is ostensibly performed as a maintenance reduction or energy-saving effort. However, when undertaken, the exterior is frequently stripped of any details that project from its elevations. Once all facades are flat and featureless, it is easier to apply the replacement siding. Unfortunately, this treatment usually leaves the building devoid of any character-defining detail. Even the casing trim around the windows has been obscured.
Several of the boarded windows are curiously adorned with a single shutter, though the telltale ghosts of their former mates still read on the faded siding. A Chinoiserie panel that once served as a railing now lies in a heap with the collapsed front-porch roof. Untended plants surround the site and cling to the building.
Even the church located immediately to the south cannot help feeling the deleterious image this abandoned structure projects to the surrounding neighborhood. After stabilizing the building, restoration efforts should begin with the removal of the invasive plants, and then focus on elements that significantly affect the buildings curb appeal. Perhaps some lost detail might be discovered under the tired cement siding.

BRAINARDSVILLE After repeated washouts, the Bryant Siding Road bridge here will be replaced.
The Bellmont Town Council discussed its reconstruction with contractor Jon Hutchins at a recent meeting.
Days of hard rain washed out the bridge in 1998, but repair was made quickly.
Heavy rains last fall also compromised the span, and it happened again this past March, according to meeting minutes.
There are about eight families living on that road, but none with school-age children that have to take the bus, said Town Supervisor Bruce Russell.
We have an arrangement with a logging company to use their road as an egress in case of an emergency, like the bridge being washed out.
Those families had to use that auxiliary road for three days before we made temporary repairs.
SHARED EFFORT
With direction from the State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Park Agency, the bridge was braced up and is presently usable.
It will eventually be replaced with a more permanent structure that can handle the sudden flow of water emitted during heavy rainstorms and melting snow from the Ragged Lake outlet, which is fairly calm most of the year, the minutes said.
