School Board briefs: December 30, 2014 - December 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Student numbers will need to add up

School District 47 received a Christmas gift from the provincial government this yearnotice of an audit.

The ministry of education will be performing a student enrolment audit at Brooks Secondary School and Westview Learning Centre, an alternate high school program which operates out of the district administration building on Ontario Avenue.

Actually its good news, said Jay Yule, superintendent of schools for the district. He explained that enrolment audits are much less complicated compared to those done for other programs offered by the district. He described it as an audit to ensure the students reported to be there are actually there. Its quite straightforward, something were quite comfortable with.

There are currently 2,026 students enrolled throughout the school districts various programs with 785 at Brooks and 33 at Westview Learning Centre.

    Bus money

They are smaller buses, said Steve Hopkins, secretary treasurer, and would augment our small fleet for out-of-town transportation and special ed field trips within the school district.

The two buses have capacities of 24 and 30 students and include areas for cargo. Drivers need a class four licence to operate them.

    Henderson update

Seismic and building upgrading work at Henderson Elementary School continues to be ahead of schedule. While the bulk of the work is already complete, by the time school resumes there will only be a few miscellaneous things left, Hopkins reported to the board at its December public meeting. Almost 70 per cent of the siding has already been installed in the upgrade to the buildings envelope, but some painting and window coverings have yet to be completed, Hopkins said.

Out of this world: 5 of the coolest things in space in 2014 - December 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The final weeks of 2014 generated some major buzz in the world of space exploration: an unmanned probe landed on a comet, there was a test flight for NASAs newest space vehicle, and 3-D printing went to the next dimension.

Here on Earth, CTVNews.ca has compiled a list of notable space ventures the past 12 months, with a peek at where were going in 2015:

    1. Pioneering Philae lands on comet, takes a nap

European Space Agency scientists had smiles as wide as the sun in November. Their Philae probe landed on a comet a first in human-directed space exploration. Dubbed the Rosetta mission, Philae had travelled for 10 years and 6.4 billion-kilometres. Once it landed on the 4-km wide comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, Philae proceeded to collect data, including photos and some haunting space sounds. But Philae soon fell silent, or rather, fell asleep. The probes solar-powered batteries drained after the craft bounced twice and landed in the shadow of a cliff. But stay tuned: the probe has promised itll be back after it catches some zzzzs.

    2. Orion completes test flight

NASA ushered in the Mars era, as one space agency administrator put it, when the unmanned Orion completed its first successful test flight in early December. The capsule shot some 5,800 kilometres into the solar system, tooktwo laps around Earth, before splashing down in the Pacific. The four-hour mission brought some scientists to tears, as NASA looks to future Orion fleets to carry humans beyond the confines of Earths orbit. Mars is the best possibility. The buzz the launch generated had not been felt since 2012, when the Curiosity rover made an unprecedented landing on the Red Planet.

    3. Comet buzzes by Mars

Astronomers were treated to spectacular views when a comet buzzed by Mars for the first time in more than a million years. In October, the so-called Siding Spring comet came within 140,000 kilometres from Mars surface. By space standards, thats a pretty close shave. Scientists said that there was no danger of a collision with the Red Planet, where various probes now roam, but the flyby did provide scientists an educational opportunity.

Siding, Vinyl Siding, House Siding – Installation and Repair - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lets face it; the exterior of your home is the number one thing that draws in peoples awareness when they look at your home. Depending on what they see, they begin to form either a positive or negative opinion.

The exterior of your home consists mainly of siding material. Siding not only contributes to the overall appearance of your home, it also protects your home against damaging outdoor elements. It is important to put great thought into the material that you use for your siding because you want the appearance to be enduring, the protection to be long lasting and you may also want to save yourself some hard earned money while your at it!

Choosing the Right Siding For Your House

Selecting the right siding for your home is much like choosing the clothes that cover your body. In most cases, the clothes that you wear are meant to enhance your appearance and protect your skin from rain, wind, and drastic temperatures. In much the same way, siding is a material that is applied to the exterior of your home as a finishing surface. This finishing surface protects your home and is also an important component of the design of your home. There are several considerations that one must make when selecting the right siding. These considerations include:

Knowing the architectural design of your home. Understanding the characteristics of materials. Being aware of the local weather and lifestyle differences.

When picking out clothes to wear you must take into account the shape and size of your body in order to select the clothes that will suit you best. In much the same way, the architectural design of your house must be taken into account in order to select the most suitable siding. Pay attention to the design. Is your house an old Victorian styled home, French inspired home or is it a western ranch styled home? Keep these design factors in mind when choosing your siding because you want the siding to compliment the architectural elements of your home.

The material of the siding is extremely important. Each material performs differently, costs differently, looks differently and requires a different amount of maintenance. In todays siding market there is an assortment of materials in various designs and colors. The most commonly used materials include:

Vinyl Siding Metal Siding Wood Siding Masonry Siding

As far as cost is concerned, vinyl is by far your cheapest option, but this doesnt mean that vinyl is of the poorest quality. Metal siding (aluminum and steel) is a step up in cost from vinyl, and wood and masonry follow after. Masonry is definitely the most expensive of these options and it includes brick, stone, cement and stucco materials.

After a quarter century, Upper Saucon still holds the line on taxes - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    UPPER SAUCON TWP., Pa. -

The Upper Saucon Twp. Board of Supervisors presented residents with a holiday present Monday night when they approved an $8.5 million budget for 2015 that contains no real estate property tax increases.

The vote continued an amazing streak in the township where residents have not seen their property taxes rise in a quarter century.

"I hope we can continue doing this," said Chairman Stephen Wagner of the stagnation of the tax rate in the township, which last saw an increase in 1989.

With a rate of 1.4 mills, an owner with a property assessed at $200,000 pays about $273 a year in taxes, according to the township.

And while property owners should be encouraged by the news Monday night so too should township employees.

Supervisors voted to adopt a pay plan resolution for non-union employees that includes a 2.25 percent raise, although healthcare costs for employees will rise by about 1.5 percent.

In other business, supervisors adopted a resolution approving Jessica Skibicki as a deputy tax collector in the township for the remainder of the term held by current tax collector Deborah Herstine.

Skibicki would assume duties in the township in the event that Herstine would become incapacitated and unable to perform her duties, according to township Manager Thomas Bell.

Supervisors also approved payment of more than $303,000 to Recon Construction Services, Inc., for work completed on phase three of the Afton Village roadway rehabilitation project, and almost $63,000 to Alan Kunsman Roofing and Siding for work completed on the township's municipal building roof replacement project.

Shepherd students explore career possibilities - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SHEPHERD The beginnings of dozens of productive and rewarding careers were possibly launched Friday at Shepherd High School.

The schools 270 students spent their last day before the holiday break attending a career fair. Students tapped into the expertise of about 40 presenters who spent about 45 minutes per session communicating to students the spark that keeps them coming to work each morning.

For Pete Thompson, who sells artificial joints for Biomet, attention to detail helping the medical team get the new joint fitted just so can extend and enhance a patients quality of life for decades after knee or hip replacement surgery.

If our people get it right, it can last 20 years, he said. (The surgical teams) job is to put it in just right. Our job is to help them accomplish that.

Thompson augmented his talk with real-life props: cobalt chrome parts and ball-and-joint combinations, which he distributed around the room. He had a ready answer for the How do your patients get through airport screening? question: We have a card explaining why people have set off the alarm.

Kathleen Armstrong, who owns Spectrum Group Architects in Billings and offered her talk in the classroom manned by her husband, Jeff, tossed candy canes to spur student responses while demonstrating how she uses 3-D computer modeling to give clients a ready and easily altered cutaway view of the home shes designing.

If a client says, I dont like siding on this wall, I can make it brick or stone, she said, demonstrating with a few keystrokes how easy that is. You dont have to erase and change everything, because one change goes to every elevation. I dont have to do it individually and by hand.

In a nearby classroom, Karlee Omsberg, a radiologic technologist with St. Vincent Healthcare, told students something that must have been music to their ears: She started working at the hospital this spring a full month before graduating from college.

She applauded the number of boys in the classroom, noting that her field is dominated by women.

She told students shes in close daily contact with doctors, and is often present in the room when a trauma patient is admitted, awaiting X-ray or CT scan orders. She brought along a light box to display an array of X-rays depicting all kinds of painful developments, including broken bones and a separated shoulder.
