House Siding Types of home sidings

When it comes to sidings for homes, there are many options. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages and is popular depending on the weather conditions prevailing in a particular area. The cost is also an influencing factor. Let us look at some of them: a). Aluminum and Vinyl Sidings Sidings made out of aluminum or vinyl score over others due to their low maintenance and the fact that they do not necessarily require painting. The only disadvantage is wear and tear over a period of time with aluminum sidings developing dents and the vinyl ones developing cracks. b). Masonite Sidings & Hardy Planks These sidings look similar but have different maintenance requirements. Masonite sidings tend to deteriorate faster and require regular upkeep whereas the Hardy planks by virtue of being made of cement do not rot and is a very good substitute for Masonite. c) Brick or Stone Sidings These are excellent alternatives and are superb in terms of their durability. The only hitch is the cost and if you can afford them, they are the best option. d) Stucco This type of siding is manufactured out of cement and the greatest advantage it offers is it is moisture proof. Depending on the weather conditions in your city, you can opt for this one. It will however require regular upkeep. e) Cedar sidings This is another excellent alternative to Masonite sidings due to its low maintenance and better looks. f) Veneer & Artificial sidings These sidings portray the look of other natural...[Read more of this review]

City Council Rejects Cell Antenna; Implications for Future Building? - March 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Siding with more than 30 residents fearful of overloaded utilities and radiation emissions, the Malibu City Council on Monday unanimously rejected the installation of a tenth T-Mobile cell phone antenna node on an already-existing utility pole in Point Dume.

The cell equipment rejection was the first of its kind by the city council, according to Planning Director Joyce Parker-Bozylinski, and raised a larger question among officials and residents regarding the safety of cell phone and utility equipment distribution throughout Malibu. Many noted a risk in the piecemeal add-ons, with more and more communications equipment being added to utility poles and little scrutiny being given.

We need to take a look at the way we do cell towers in this city, said Councilman John Sibert.

An application by Crown Castle Communications to install the antenna for T-Mobile was first appealed last year by a group of Point Dume neighbors who live near the pole in question. The Malibu Planning Commission denied the appeal in December, siding with city staffs assertion that the cell antenna met all necessary design and installation standards. Grayfox resident Matt Rapf then appealed the planning commissions decision to the city council.

Components of the installation would have included a 24-foot utility cable, 4-foot radio reception unit, 2-foot by 7-inch antenna and one-foot utility box on an already-existing utility pole on Grayfox Street.

Carver Chiu, a representative for antenna applicant Crown Castle, said the installation on Grayfox Street would fill an important void for coverage in Point Dume by servicing 44 homes and a beach access pathway in the eastern peninsula of the neighborhood.

Theres a growing demand for the infrastructure to support our societal craving for technology, he said.

But residents argued adding another antenna to a pole already seemingly overloaded by other communications equipment was a huge safety risk.

Theres all kinds of people working [at that utility pole] all the time. Weve had a lot of new loads put on those poles, said Madelyn Glickfeld, a Grayfox Street resident. I dont think anybodys looking at the weight of those poles.

Laetz, who helped overhaul statewide safety regulations on utility poles, spoke out against the new antenna as well.

Quiet meeting in Mt. Gretna led by porch request - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Borough Council approved a variance for a porch to be constructed at a home on Lancaster Avenue

    By Kathy Hackleman

    For The Lebanon Daily News

Mt. Gretna >> Members of Borough Council on Monday night approved a variance request for 417 Lancaster Ave. that calls for a porch to encroach into a setback.

The request was made by Dev Idgunji, who plans to build a house at that location. The encroachment into the setback will be 4.62 feet on the east side of the home and 2.34 feet on the west side.

Approval of the request is contingent upon similar approval by the Chautauqua board.

In unrelated business, a discussion was held about parking problems, specifically those caused by renters and their guests who arrive with multiple cars, leaving residents without enough parking spaces.

Keith Kilgore, solicitor, noted the streets are public and, if people are parked legally, there isn't anything that can be done. He said the Chautauqua board is looking into possible options that are in place in other communities where there are multiple vacation rentals.

    In other business:

Kilgore and Bill Care, public works director brought some concerns raised by borough residents to council. The issue involved whether there are residents who are undertaking renovation projects without obtaining proper permits.

BC Hydro customer in different kind of smart meter battle - March 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sandra Hermiston & Lynda Steele, CTV Vancouver Published Wednesday, March 5, 2014 6:00AM PST Last Updated Wednesday, March 5, 2014 7:26PM PST

While some BC Hydro customers have fought tooth and nail against getting smart meters at their homes, a North Vancouver man has spent years battling the utility giant just to get his installed.

Stephen Stalbergs electricity meter is in an odd location, high up on the side of his house.

Apparently the previous owner raised this house put the basement in and the meter never got brought down, said Stalberg.

It wasnt an issue until BC Hydro wanted to install a smart meter. The first contractor called to Stalbergs home told him the meter was too high, and he did not have a ladder. As well, the contractor said the siding of the house was too close to the meter so the installation couldnt be complete.

BC Hydro said it would send a tradesman out, but a year later nothing had been done.

Then Stalberg got a surprise in the mail, a letter saying he was delaying the process and would be charged $35 a month for refusing a smart meter.

"I've been phoning once a month, they just say they're on their way," he said.

Hopeful, Stalberg took down the siding on the house last September and left a ladder out for workers. But after 18 months, he was fed up and called Steele on Your Side.

Consumer reporter Lynda Steele took the issue to BC Hydro on his behalf.

City to accept bids on repairs to clubhouses - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The city is seeking bids for repairs and upgrades to the clubhouses at Franklyn's Field and Pinti Field.

The Board of Estimate and Contract voted 5-0 Thursday to advertise for bids on the work. Bids will be due at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, in the Clerk's Office at City Hall. The bids will then be opened at the board meeting immediately after the deadline.

Franklyn's Field is located at 1106 N. James St. The clubhouse is located along the park's west side, fronting James Street.

The city wants to complete at least four aspects of the project, with other work available for optional bids. First is the replacement of six plexi-glass windows with fixed glass vinyl windows. The second requirement is the wrapping of porch posts. The contractor must also put in a concession window and replace the 36-inch entry doorway.

Additional items for which contractors can submit bids, but which the city can choose not to do, include insulation, metal facia repairs, drip edge work and upgrades to the attic stairway door.

At Pinti Field on Sixth Street, the city will remove siding and small gable trim, but will contract out installation of new siding and associated features.

The work for both sites is to be completed by May 15.
